I've always been grateful to have been born at the end of the year that the vaccine had been developed. My mom who raised me alone was a Pediatrics Physical Therapist in a children's hospital. Due to "daycare" being unheard of in the 1950s and 1960s, I spent lots of time after Kindergarten and a couple of years in grade school in the PT Dept, hiding out from the hospital administrator. Many children affected by Polio were there frequently having their withered limbs moved manually by others so that they wouldn't become immovable. They were also fitted and refitted with "braces" for years, until the people making the decisions realized it wasn't doing anything for them, and to the great relief of many children and their parents and Therapists the "braces" disappeared. I'll never forget those children. I've always wondered about the poor people in the Iron Lung machines, and how they could cope with living that way, without ending up losing their minds. Thank you for the beautiful video..

What a beautiful spirit! Loved Adolph’s comment that he learned while in the iron lung that there is more to life than just a body. We are not primarily a body housing a mind. We are first and foremost a spirit which inhabits, at times, a body with a mind of its own. I learned this too inside an iron lung. As a nurse, this knowledge helped me understand patients better. Many thanks to Adolf for sharing his journey.

4:10 I really needed this due to an extremely “hopeless” family situation. By the way, the Axman Surplus Store on University Avenue in St. Paul Minnesota has had a NFS vintage iron lung on its sales floor for decades. I never miss the opportunity to silently acknowledge the device, if not stop a few moments and marvel thankfully for what humans have invented and utilized to not only live but strive and even thrive!! My sincere appreciation for this first hand account and to the spirit of the man who deeply inspires thusly!!
