These are the water pumps of the cell, they stop the cell from exploding by pumping the water out, by using energy. When they get old enough, they cant maintain this balance, and the pumps stop working, resulting with cell bursting its insides out. This death is called "deplasmolysis". Only happens in animal cells and protistae; like the paramecium here.
