From the late 1970s to early 1990s, a restaurant on Indy's east sided thrilled audiences of several generations with a unique approach of family entertainment. Families, dates, school and church groups alike would stand in line for hours to be seated in a huge room, dine on delicious pizza, and then out of nowhere, majestic music would boom and from a platform, an organist would appear behind what was known as The Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ. New comers, and regulars alike would be in awe of the massive sound, and how not only the organist (either Donna Parker, Ken Double or Bill Valask) would perform wonderful melodies, but, also played the percussion and other sundry sound effects that were NOT populated by a computer or any thing electronic. It was done by the basic flip of a switch and sending a current to the selected instrument. I hope you enjoy this piece of Indy history

I was organist at Kens Melody Inn Los Altos CA when this organ was installed therein. It was gold. Still recall how the vast majority of pipes simply could not be voiced to the chambers, however large they were. But folks enjoyed the installation and Kens served very good pizza and such. Great memories. Great opportunity!

I used to love this place, but sadly not many other I knew did. My brother was delighted, this was my birthday present from him, every July as long as the place was in biz.

This makes me think of the scene in ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE where the gym floor at the High School dance opens up revealing a swimming pool and people start jumping in!😄

This was the MOST awesome place to me. And 3" years later, I am STILL waiting for an opportunity to try out a theatre organ!

There is a huge Wurlitzer organ at the Organ Stop Pizza parlor in Mesa, Arizona. It has 4 ranks, 83 stops and over 6000 pipes. Is that big enough for you.? They have a rotating crew of 5 (!!!) organists to play the instrument, which comes out of the floor in the old time fashion. If you are an organist, the management may well allow you to operate the instrument. The instrument and the Organ Stop Pizza emporium have many videos on RU-vid. It is open 7 days per week, from 4:00pm to (I think) 8:30pm. The whole building is built around the instrument and the walls are all covered with pipes. When I visited, I was in the balcony enjoying my cheese pizza (10") and the entire trumpet section was right above my right ear lobe, bringing their particular sound directly to my (said) ear.

if there were, it was done by PMP or contracted out, as recording devices were not allowed by patrons. Back then, a home video camera was pretty huge

There were two Music Palaces: Cardinal in Fort Wayne and Paramount in Indy; the former with a 4manual 40rank in a bizarre metallic blue and gold, the latter with a 4/42 Modernistic aka "Waterfall" console shown here. That - this - organ ended up at Roaring 20s Pizza & Pipes in Florida. Having recently closed, there's no telling where it'll go... It was originally a 20-rank organ in Oakland, CA's Paramount Theatre. A large pizza & pipes type spot is still going in Mesa, AZ called Organ Stop.

The Organ Stop Pizza emporium's instrument now has 4 ranks, 83 stops and over 6000 pipes. The entire building was built around the instrument. And the pizzas are great. It is open from 4:00pm to (I think) 8:30pm and the organists play from 4:30 until closing. There are any number of videos of the organ playing on RU-vid. Audience requests are solicited and encouraged. When I was there, I sat in the balcony, and the trumpet section was just over my right ear, and as such I got a full perspective as to the quality of their sound. Search RU-vid for Organ Stop Pizza. They have their own website as well. When I was there, I requested St. Louis Blues and the Fanfare to the Overture to William Tell (aka The Lone Ranger Theme Song) and both were played. The audience was requesting all sorts of songs, and the organist knew most of them. The most impressive was The Chatanooga Choo Choo from the Glen Miller jazz era, and the low notes of the "engine" starting up shook the building. If you are ever anywhere close to the southeast Phoenix area, stop off there and be amazed.

What became of this organ? Is it active somewhere?

reportedly, the entire organ, after being sold to a Florida buyer, was broken up and sold for parts and the console wound up at Chrome Organ in Reno and then onto the Berkley Community theater in Berkley, CA.

Music to go quietly insane and dance out a fifth floor window to-- seriously, sounds like something straight out of a horror/comedy-- and as twisted as that is, it's not a knock. Quite the opposite, in fact.
