No, Andrew. The ending of this film is not open ending. Buying house for dad was not real. It was just the son's plan and fantasy, which will never come true in reality.

one metaphor that i loved from this movie was the "smell". Poverty is not something that people can help. They cannot just get rich instantly like some people think. It stays, sometimes through generations. Sometimes you can't wash away a smell, because that's the smell you were born with. You're family smelled like that, your house smelled like that. You can't escape it.

After the movie came out, I caught a few YT film theory scene reviewer for the movie. I really liked the symbolism represented in the whole sequence of the family running back home during the rain storm. You see just how high up the Park family home is situated compared to the Kim family basement home and how far away and down many steps it took them to get back "home." Definitely a big deal about classism in Korea that I'm glad others in the world could now understand. Hoping for ongoing celebration and quality from Korean cinema.

like a few people have said: you missed on the interpretation. korean cinema, like most distinct asian cinemas, often follow a common theme prevalent in their culture, especially this director. in this case, it is the inequality of a class system in s.korea. this family of clever, industrious individuals can't afford further schooling, private tutoring, certifications, use of connections and the like... to get ahead they had to con their way in. themes of high and low: the rain which freshened the air and washed everything downhill caused the sewage to flood the poor people living in subterranean conditions (sublevel apartment and hidden basement), the source of the "smell." the housekeeper/husband, who worshipped the parks and their wealth, were left to fight over the scraps of the wealthy with the kims, equally destitute. you missed all the microaggressions from mr and mrs park towards their 'servants.' the ending was in reference to mr kim's assertion that "no plan" is the best. kevin's "plan" will never work as it would take kevin 500 years to afford the house due to stratification of korean society. meanwhile the parks' son, traumatized as he was, had a tutor, a specialized art teacher, a driver, trips, a housekeeper, the best schools, indulgent birthday celebrations, whatever toys he wanted... behaving as he pleased... he will still have every possible advantage. the parks are pretty much parasites living with the poor underfoot. the kims may not the heroes here, but the parks are definitely not the good guys in this movie... mr park calling for the keys so he can drive away while mr kim is holding the daughter/art teacher who is bleeding out? the director himself thinks the themes are obvious, but i'm sure there is a cultural context in western climes where societal mobility is more achievable, at least in theory.
@harrietelizabeth9195
@harrietelizabeth9195 Месяц назад
I totally agree with you on this. The other common theme I see a lot in South Korean cinema is the ambiguity between hero and villain. When I was at university we had an assignment where we could write about literally anything and I chose to write about how South Korean revenge movies often have blurred lines between hero and villain where the viewer is expected to sympathise or feel sorry for the villain in one way or another, sometimes to the point that we are not even sure who the villain or hero truly is. We see it in "Oldboy", we see it in "I Saw the Devil", we see it in "JSA: Joint Security Area", we see it in "Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War", we see it in "71: Into the Fire", we see it in "Forgotten" and we see it in Parasite too. I attributed it to the narrative in Western media that North Korea is a villain whereas South Koreans sympathise with them, they still see each other as a separated nation torn apart by nations that had no right to do that, with still living family members separated. To quote JSA: Joint Security Area - "What's so wrong about guys of the same blood hanging out and playing games?" and to also quote 71: Into the Fire during a scene when a South Korean soldier shoots a North Korean soldier and after he hears the NK soldier crying for his mother he writes "Mother, I thought the enemy were monsters with horns, but they cry for their mothers just like we do".

@lalitthapa101
@lalitthapa101 11 дней назад
@Someone-eb7js The overall critique is of the Class Struggle the onus of which lies heavily on the Rich and upper class in the movie. The poor family isn't denounced nor rejected for their actions cause theirs is seen as something born out of necessity and survival. The movie isn't Both siding the classes. There's a clear. A VERY CLEAR parasite in the movie and the actions of the family is an act of vengeance for the exploitation that they have been subjected to. So no, it's not a critique of both the families. The movie doesn't even really seem to denounce the poor family. Infact there's a vibe of support too that the audience is made to feel for the family to finally get rich. It's finally a critique of the system of which the Rich family is the upholder of. So imo, no. Its not fully a critique of both the classes. The terminology only applies for the rich class in this case.

No, disregard and contempt for lower classes does not come from a lack of education. Rich people are hiring private teachers to teach good manners to their children. They are the most educated ones ; because they can buy time. Having more time is the purpose to hire servants. That extra of time is invested in collected more knowledge, assuring more power. They have the time to read news, essays and studies about society. And they could treat their servants, as their equals and ask them, everyday, how they are going. They could socialize with them and collect info about their lives, everyday. That is not a deficit of education. Instating a distance with their servants, treating them as pieces of furniture, is part of their education. Because lifetime of servants is treated, as a disposable thing by upper class ; the upper class is the parasite of lower classes lives. The driver does not kill the owner of the house by envy. He is expecting a gesture from the guy with much power than him, to save his daughter's life. There is a young woman on the floor that is bleeding to death. And the rich guy reaction is not to pick the phone to call for rescue, or to try to stop the maniac with a knife. It is to flee. To flee, keeping his contempt for lower classes. The upper class stinks. That is the one who deserves to die from its disregard. But that is not what is happening. That are lower classes, that are dying from pollutions and floodings and things hidden in the basement of a society, owned, shaped, built by the upper class, to satisfy her and only her.

Actually, no. If you recall the conversation between Mrs Kim and Mrs Park, when the little kid passed out and had seizure, she said that they only have 15 minutes to get him to the hospital before the damage become permanent. That’s why the dad is rushing to get the car key to get his son to the hospital, not to flee. If he wants to flee, he would just run away like everyone else.

@@eatsmylifeYTPerhaps you can interpret it as the rich people can afford to pay for all the service not because they earn it and deserved it, but because they are priviledged from the day they were borned. Whereas those poor would who work to their bone will never stand a chance to live a decent live because 10% of these rich priviledge are owning 90% of the national resources (money/work opportunities/education and etc.), while the remaining 90% of population are forced to compete for the remaining 10% of resource and equivalent to only 10% of money flow in the free market are available to be earned by these 90% of population. Ain't that similar to how parasite works? That's why you can say the priviledge are leeching on most of the resources that suppose to meant for the entire population, and forced the poor to serve the priviledge class and even lose their dignity in the process even tho they are both citizen of this country who meant to be equal, yet the financial imbalance status has sabotage such equality.

You'd think Andrew would have picked up on the division of class and other similar themes popular with Korean cinema/dramas due to watching what I feel is enough to see that it's an issue that is explored pretty often, though might not be the main theme usually. Also picking up some cultural ideas that exist in all Korean (possibly most Asian) media. 😢

This is such an amazing movie. It talks about class divide and when you see it in the theatre it also reveals the class the audience belongs to in society . You immediately resonate and understand the characters that belong to the same class as you. Ofcourse there are exceptions but mostly it's applicable universally in the capitalist society. The rich people belong to upper class, the house keeper middle class and the main family is lower class. It's so interesting how self refectory the movie is.

Sure the poor family conned their way into their jobs in an unethical manner, but so what? What other ethical options were they drowning in that they could afford to discard the Park family lifeline and wait for the next squeaky-clean opportunity? Doesn't your criticism amount to saying that they should just always stay in their place, and never cross the line? The film shows a lot of hints that the poor family was competent and over-qualified, but following the rules and having a plan had never worked out for any of them. It's certainly convenient for the oppressors if the oppressed behave, but is that actual justice?
