The thing is that all members of the family have the qualifications and skills for those jobs but they don't have a "diploma", "status" to actually access those jobs because that's all people care about, they only care about papers and "connections". Even having a diploma or certification is not enough, they still need the "connection recommendation".
Your point is also evidenced by the fact that the biggest crime they were charged of after squatting in someone's home and tying people up in a basement was forgery.
In the beginning of the movie, the mom comically said "you should have brought food" when they received the stone from son's friend. This draws parallel to when Jessica could have brought food to the man in the basement but instead the son brought the stone, cause the following murders.
One big detail I caught was that when the rich mother and poor father drive home from the grocery store, the father overheard the mother say that the rain (the same rain that flooded and destroyed the Kim’s family’s home) was a blessing because it cleared the grass or something of that sort. An eye-opening thing in regards to people of the higher class becoming blind to the harsh realities the lower class face.
Put yourself in there shoes. How would they know that somthing like that happened to the poor people. And would you care enough to check if everyone was in the city was alright after some rain? I'd get annoyed if they knew it caused devastation but they dont so.
7:18 ngl i probably would have had a seizure too if i saw that in my house so i dont blame this kid at all, literally one of the most terrifying things ive seen
I believe the mother playing the current housekeeper who kicks the other down the stairs is a reminder that hierarchy is human nature and those at the bottom who climb up the social ladder are often just as likely to maintain their status by treating the others badly, keeping them from rising.
i believe quite the opposite - as this is a very obviously anti-capitalist film and it implies that the system puts people (even members of the same working class who would otherwise be friends, as she said that she was nice) against eachother. So not really natural, but this is how they were made to have no choice and see who is the "strongest" to survive- literally
On an upbeat note, Id like to think that the reason the rock doesn't float at the end is because, unlike previous hollow promises, symbolised by the rock which floated, the promise that he makes to buy the house is truly meant and that is why the rock is real in that scene
I noticed another detail in my 7th watch of the "Parasite". In the basement revelation scene, Moon- gwang(The OG maid) says that her husband, Geun-se is living there because of the loan sharks. Then Geun-se states that he wasn't being able to repay the dues and loans because his "cake shop in taiwan" was destroyed by fire. This was foreshadowed earlier in the film by Mr and Mrs. Kim in the driver's lounge scene. They said that before Mr Kim was a valet, he used to work at a chicken place which went bust before the "Taiwan cake shop". The "Taiwan Cake Shop" mentioned by Mrs Kim is the exact same Taiwan Cake Shop which was owned by Geun-Se. 🔥💯 Parasite is literally the Greatest OF ALL TIME. 💯
@@pointysidedown it is the same "Taiwan Cake Shop"! Go watch the movie properly(specially the cafeteria scene). In that scene, Mr & Mrs. Kim clearly states that he used to work as a valet in the same area in Taiwan where the Cake Shop was burnt. Geun-Se was hiding because he couldn't the repay the loan due to his cake shop getting burnt down in Taiwan! I proved it the help of those scenes where the Taiwan Cake Shop which was mentioned by the Kims Is the same Taiwan Cake Shop which at one point was owned by Geun-Se! Now can you prove that it wasn't the same Taiwan Cake Shop? Is there any scene where it is said that it isn't the same Taiwan Shop? Nope you can't because there isn't a single scene where it's hinted that the cake shop mentioned by both families are different. Don't prove someone wrong with such confidence when you don't even have any proofs.
@@pointysidedown this is Parasite's breakdown and this comment is also parasite related! Why the hell are you mentioning real life things whichever has nothing to do with the movie!
@@ManiDa-qu2hi normally I wouldn't respond to someone as rude as you are but here is your proof. At 31:01 they discuss dad's past work. He owned a chicken shop that went bust. Then he owned a cake shop that went bust, then worked as a valet. He owned these failed businesses. At least that's what the subtitles indicate. They might say something different in korean, which I don't speak. Really no need to get so aggressive about a movie. Don't you think they would have known each other if he worked for him? The cake shop was a small business, surely the owner would know all of their employees? Why didn't they recognise each other? Two different cake shops, that's why. Your idea was neat but falls apart and makes no sense when you really think about it. The director just knew the cake shops were trendy at the time and thought it would be realistic for the time and place. It actually has a lot to do with the movie, a lot of middle class folks became poverty class because of those cake shops.
How so would you say? I'm familiar with Kafka's Metamorphosis but I don't really see any large parallels between the plots because Metamorphosis only focuses on the Samsa family without much interaction with outsiders (aside from Gregor's general manager and the subtenants)? I also feel like they have very different messages and interpretations, so I would be interested in your opinion
@@leparraindufromage366 if you view both works of art through the lens of end-stage-capitalism where protagonist/main family have to turn into disgusting creatures to keep up with capitalism and it’s requirements. Metamorphosis - family use the main character as a piggy bank and then when they have no use for him they literally kill him and move on to the younger daughter/sister as a new parasitic relationship through which to live Parasite (literally a parallel to Metamorphosis) - the whole family uses the elite family like parasites disposing problems as they arise because within their capitalistic structure they’d rather Leech off of “hard work” than do any of it themselves.
11:07 changes in light will almost instantly cause the pupils to react, if someone has been in dark for too long the instance that light shines, the pupils will be pin pointed to the size of a grain of sand! that's why doctors swing a flashlight back and forth to detect if the brain is still functioning and alive, and that's a very rapid movement!
I love how this movie explored a different side of an overused topic (rich vs poor). We've seen so many films that cover the black & white, such as the evil corrupted rich taking advantage of the poor. While that's a sad truth, it's only a portion of the real power dynamic in our society. We often overlook how the poor is always fighting with each other when they could be pulling their heads together and help each other. We see so many examples through everyday crime news (all the hate crimes, neighborhood crimes, small business/convenience store robbery). The reality is, most middle-elite class in modern society are just minding their own business. Sure, there's a portion of rich people who are truly evil. But really, the rest of them simply don't give a shit about what's going down in the lower class community. Their main interest is on which company they should invest on next. That means they also have no business in directly harming the poor. At the same time, they casually look down on the poor people living in the same city while also casually donating money to Unicef.
the indifference of the rich towards the poor is exactly why they are often seen as evil. their wealth comes from the misery of the poor at every step of the way yet they have no will to change it.
@@salmansengulthis has to be the most casually racist comment i have ever read. you’re disgusting & should be more focused on school shootings, domestic terrorists, & white on white crime.
Your introduction is a piece of art.. I love the comparison with “snowpiercer”, from the back bottom paying blood all the way long to the front, yet this one is very local, that only Koreans could understand some of the slang phrases.. I agree the end is just a fantasy
I'm a big fan of Bong Joon-ho films from recent years. Loved parasite and watched sooo many 'what you missed' videos after watching the movie BUT STILL you added new information I haven't seen in other videos. Thanks for always being so thorough!
Excellent analysis brub. I honestly pity the people who don't want to read subtitles, they're missing on a lot of great movies like this. I just wish Ki-Jung didn't die :(
Man, I've been watching several "Parasite" videos to prepare for a Movie Club discussion I'm participating in tomorrow about the film, and, well, this breakdown is the BEST yet. LOTS of great insight! Great job! Subscribing...
I also checked out this movie after finishing squid games, and it was phenomenal. Was originally disappointed that you didn’t have any videos that covered it. Until now!
90% of the world are the have-nots. That's why Parasite, Snowpiercer and Squid Game did so well. The Koreans are honestly capturing this predicament and giving hopes and false happy ending. Will the sheep ever hunt the wolves in real life?
0:08 I am a huge fan of your videos and everything you have put out but you did get one thing very fundamentally wrong in this video. You mentioned how the poor family are the parasites of the movie but actually it's both families. The movie actually very much highlights this duality. While the poor family cannot live on their own and have to constantly use others to continue living, such as using people for job references, using other people's Wi-Fi, and of course the obvious of taking what they can from the rich. As for the rich family, they have actually become too privileged. The rich family is that a point where they can no longer tutor or babysit their own kids, they no longer cook for themselves, they don't clean their own house, nor do they drive their own cars, and have to use the poor to continue living themselves. Both families use each other heavily throughout the film in order to get by. The relationship is parasitic due to their complete disregard of how their actions affect the other family and selfish nature to use each other for their own wellbeing. 0:08
I think you misunderstood the meaning of "parasitic nature". The poor family is being parasitic by leeching on the rich family eventhough they're teaching, cleaning and driving the rich family, they're still frauds. But the rich only employing them and using them and paying them. This is not parasitic at all. You might say symbiotic where both parties get something, but definitely not parasitic.
i just watched this movie for the first time and wow, I didn't even pick up on all the nuances! Great, very original story! Korean movies can be so fantastic!
The rich wife calls the rain a blessing because it clears the air from the yellow dust from china and other air pollution. Not because they come back from camping.
i know the ending is probably a fantasy and the credits song kinda explains what happens instead but I hate sad/ambiguous endings so im gonna say that the ending is real and they were able to live happily together (although im really sad that the sister actually died cuz I liked her character and its really depressing that she wont be able to join her family in living their dream)
This was a great breakdown ! So many things I missed I can't wait to go back and re watch and than make all my friends that haven't seen it watch it and rewatch it untill they understand it's brilliance!
@Heavy Spoilers Great video Paul! You nailed all the key details like the “free extermination” fumigation scene that foreshadowed who the parasites would be. I’m really hoping that this review will lead you to review Bong Joon Ho‘s other classics *The Host* and *Snowpiercer.*
I'd say why there is no definitive bad guy in this movie is that at times we all are bad. We all can be parasites. We all are parasites. On each other. On the world. On each other's WIFI. Also the toilet up a stairway kind of means shit flows downhill. It flows downhill no matter the class. We all shit on those "lower" than us. Imo.
Da-song fell in love with native american culture frfr, its funny because he was the first person to be accused of being a liar but slick was the only one who wasn't. ram don wasn't his favorite evident because he had zero interest in it. Ms park told the housekeeper to make ramen because she wanted it, but didn't want her husband to think she's a fat girl 😂
In order to truly appreciate Korean or other Asian films, one has to be detailed oriented and know how to read backgrounds. Nice catch especially the money part where rich mom takes out few cash before handing it to the dude and acted like she put more for him than his friend Min for sake of “inflation”
I noticed that Ki-Woo said his sister was the most suited to the upper class life out of the whole family, but shes the only one that dies. Not sure what that symbolises but there you go
I saw the film as the the origin story for Joaquin Phoenix’s head injury in the joker. The sons story could be the prequel to the Joker…gets whacked in the head & starts laughing at inappropriate things, goes crazy.
Hollow rock symbol of fortune in movie Parasite can be key holder bought from ebay. Not everyone is stupid put key under door mat :) Maybe is Spaceballs code from glass firmament is 12345.
The question left unanswered though is when they all went into the basement and first discovered the lady’s husband, why was her face cut and beaten up? Was it because it was hard to cut the security cameras or did something else happen? I’m deeply confused about that part.
Yo! I didn't realize that the title of this movie goes in pair with one of his others ! The Host ! Get it ? The host and parasite exist together in nature lol
@@ChefSporty he couldn’t dude, wanted murderer and still without anything. Security cams would’ve catched him or someone else all possible, but yet not needed for the movie plot
Loved the movie💯💯🖤❤️🔥i feel lile with everything that happened to him he will have the strength to actually go to university and become rich to get the house
I believe the western equivalent of what Mrs. Park wanted prepared for her is lobster Mac and cheese. A children’s favorite meal and probably considered a simple meal but with the expensive added lobster. I am also confused, Were the protagonists second class citizens or third? It doesn’t seem like the Parks house, was THAT nice OR extremely upper class. Also their behavior was easy to mimic for people who never knew anyone in their class before. I’m not sure how that works in Korea. In suburban USA, places like middle Michigan to Alabama, somebody can buy a house twice that size with acres of land for equivalent of £200,000 /$350,000. Decidedly middle class, not the removed Uber Rich. This is where I am ignorant. Some countries very rich are middle-class n other countries
I'm not pretty sure about the class thing, but unlike USA and other European countries, South Korea's land mass is smaller in total. Which still remains true compared to single state in a US and to put on top of that they even a ave a much more population total compared to a US state which have a bigger land mass. So probably lot prices in a smaller country would be a lot more pricier even for the first class citizen in that particular country. Also in general Asian houses really is not a big defining factor to measure up how rich one is especially if we are talking about the ones in the higher class. Cause like the ones in this movie they own other house/s besides the one they are using.
Only super rich can afford a decent sized plot of land in the rich part of the city of Soul. So the the Parks are super wealthy, as even a LOT of super successful celebrities, musicians and businessmen usually live in apartments. Conclusion: owning a house is a big flex
why can't we see the secret episode bc i want to see the guy with red hair plz and that old guy is gonna be dead bc he ate to much carrots hahahahahahahaahahhahahhahahahahahahahahaha
