Parasite Eve wasn't the PS1's only horror RPG

@@diavalmoon I have a good feeling they’ll put out a remaster along the lines of the FFVIII one. If that performs well, I think they’d consider doing a remake (I hope they do.)

I know the pain. I kept most of my games from when I was growing up, but one of the few exceptions was the game Azure Dreams, which I gave to my friend when I was in middle school, which his brother then sold to GameStop. I later found a beat up copy at a Good Will, but the fact that my original copy is out there somewhere still haunts me to this day.

It’s definitely a different experience than those games. It’s also not quite as good, though I’d still recommend someone to play it if they were a fan of the series.

Same. I got it off of eBay for around $25 when I was in high school. The dude even threw in a little E3 promotional card for the game, which was the only time I ever got something like that with an online purchase (it wasn’t listed as being included.)

Yeah, I think a lot of the issues can be fixed with emulation, by using save states and speeding things up. I’d heard there may be some sort of Shadow Hearts remaster coming, and it’d be awesome if they included this.

Two I can think of off the top of my head are Yakata: Nightmare Project for PS1 and Sweet Home for Famicom. The first one unfortunately doesn’t have any translations from what I know, but the second one does.

Vagrant Story’s a great game and has a gothic tone for sure, but I don’t think I’d call it horror.

I agree. That tends to be an issue when writing characters in a lot of media it seems: just make them mad at each other until towards the end for conflict.

I get one's a Priest, ones a Pegan Witch, and one is likly an Atheist given his irl counter part was thought to be none religious if i remember correctly. But maybe, juuuuust maybe, a Lovcraftian hell house is not the place to care about those sorts of things.@@LegendOfGames

I agree that it has issues. I think it’s a game that’s vastly improved via emulation and save states, which makes it less tedious and more enjoyable in a lot of areas.

Yeah, they’ve gotten crazy. I actually got Koudelka off of eBay when I was in high school for around $30. Parasite Eve I got a few years before that at a pawn shop for something like $6. In either case, I’d recommend emulating them considering how overpriced they’ve gotten. Koudelka is especially improved with the use of save states.

@@LegendOfGames I have shadow hearts from the new world (Which I love ) Ans then managed to get covenant but the other games are ridiculous in price Even other games like fatal frame are so expensive but sadly I don't know how to emulate stuff

@@deodrith7672 From the New World is a great game. Funny enough, I own all the games in the series except it, but it's the only one I've played aside from Koudelka. It's definitely worth learning how to emulate stuff if you can. I never really tried to figure it out until after I graduated from college, but in my case it has certainly made retro gaming a whole lot easier and in a lot of cases more enjoyable.

@@LegendOfGames I own a decent chunk of retro game consoles but not a lot It mostly just sucks that old games are being forced into such high prices instead of being remade But with remakes or remaster Just look at MOBW they decided to censor that because apparently outfits that you need to play the game fully to unlock are to risque But where should I start looking to getting into emulation ?

@@deodrith7672 I personally think that unless it’s a nearly 1:1 recreation of the original game like the recent Last of Us Part I, remakes usually stand as their own experience and shouldn’t be viewed as a replacement. That said, I wish game publishers would take a cue from the music and film industry and make a bigger effort to make their old titles easily available through re-releases. Putting out an entire catalog of PS1 games on PSN sure seems like a better alternative to nothing, which is what most publishers still seem to be doing. As for emulation, I’d recommend getting software for managing the various emulators and consoles into one library. For Mac, OpenEmu is very easy to use and set up, and on Windows there’s LaunchBox, which takes a bit more effort, but still makes it easy for the most part.

I wouldn't personally say it's better than Parasite Eve, though I guess I'm biased since that's one of my favorite games. I think Koudelka has quite a few more issues. I can understand why someone would prefer it, though. It's a very cool/unique game for its time.

I understand what you mean, but that’s cause Parasite Eve is one of my favorite games haha. Koudelka’s definitely not as good, but an interesting game to play for sure.

@LegendOfGames Well, you can keep asserting that lol, but I'm telling you, I played the game a lot back when it came out and have recently watched videos of cutscenes to confirm. The character herself pronounces it 'Kuh-del-ka'.

@@danoliver3053 yep, like how a lot of the Canadian actors in the Pokémon anime sounded like they were saying “pok-uh-mon.” It’s not how it’s pronounced. You can look it up online: Koudelka (Japanese: クーデルカ, Hepburn: Kūderuka)

I love Vagrant Story. I’m not sure what the “nope” is referring to, but I wouldn’t quite call it a horror RPG if that’s what you’re getting at. It’s got gothic vibes for sure, but it’s a lot more of what I’d associate with a typical fantasy RPG than Koudelka or Parasite Eve.
