I love the point that they weren't scamming to get rich. They were scamming to get basic jobs.

Fun fact, the old housekeeper ringing the doorbell is right at the middle of the movie, and that one simple thing changes the genre of the movie completely. Parasite deserved that Best Picture at the Oscars for sure

I liked how Bong Joon-ho, the writer-director used the storm. For the poor family it was devastating, their house was flooded & they had to evacuate to a shelter. For the rich family it was a welcome downpour that cleared the pollution for their garden party. Layers, man.

I think the fact that the character "Jessica" was the only one in the family that died is really symbolic. She was the one out of the family that best fit into the upper-class lifestyle, even without proper education she actually helped the young boy a lot. She was also the only one that didn't replace anyone. Idk, I just think it's interesting that the one person who seemed to be the most "natural" in the upper-class is person who died.

Something I realized this time that I didn't put together on my first watch is that the scholar's rock given to the Kim's is fake. When their house floods, the son finds the rock floating on top of the water. This could be seen as foreshadowing that their dreams of wealth are unobtainable and that things are about to fall apart. While the symbolism of that is interesting, it also explains why Ki-Woo survives having the rock launched at his head, because it's much lighter than it should be. Also, the title could apply to the two poor families we see in the movie, but you could also view the rich family as parasites in their own way.

This movie is fucking fantastic. The humour, the drama, everything lands so well. I can't believe it's been almost three years since it came out. So glad you guys are watching it.

Park So-dam, the actress who played Jessica, just had surgery for thyroid papillary cancer in December AND recovered from Covid this past month. Best wishes to her.

I like the line "they can afford to be nice" because it covers a huge part of what this movie is about. People might look at the Kim family and think they're the parasites, and certainly they're "morally unscrupulous" in their dealings. But the fact is, they wouldn't have to be if they weren't living in constant poverty and desperation. The fact that the poor family's home is all the way down and their lives are completely destroyed by one flood, but the rich family is all the way up and saw it as "lucky" rain, it forces people into inhumane situations regardless of whether they're inherently "good" or "bad". Moreover no matter what they do they are unable to escape their station and place in life. That's what Capitalism has done to many real people.

This winning at the Oscars was the last good thing to happen before the world went to shit 😂

Something I didn't realize until I rewatched the film is that the rock that is meant to bring them fortune isn't actually a real rock- it floats when their apartment floods, and it doesn't kill the son like a real rock would. It's hollow, just like the promise of wealth and opportunity that came with it.

Thought it was interesting when the mom asks the daughter to give the husband/wife food in the basement, cause they might be hungry, but instead Ki Woo brings the rock. Compared to in the beginning of the movie when the family is gifted the rock, and the mom says food would've been better.

Fun fact : They chose to kill Jessica cause she represents the hope of the family (her having the most skills and being the smartest). It was sort of a way to say they cant escape their condition, not when they're this trapped in this situation.. Kevin's monologue meets this idea too, he can only dream to reach such place.

The first half of this movie is a comedy, the second half is a thriller.

The fact that this movie manages to be a dark comedy for the first half, and a thriller/horror for the second is amazing. It's almost exactly in the middle in the run time.

The scene with the guy coming up is so creepy… that’s definitely an image that stays with you.

one metaphor that i loved from this movie was the "smell". Poverty is not something that people can help. They cant just get rich instantly like some people think. It stays, sometimes through generations. Sometimes you cant wash away a smell, because thats the smell you were born with. You're family smelled like that, your house smelled like that. You cant escape it.

For me, the indication of how special this film is, was my mom’s reaction to it. She’s fairly disinterested in most movies but came along with me to the cinema when second screenings of the movie were happening during the awards season. She was engrossed from start to finish, and let out an audible “what the fuck” when the housekeeper rang the doorbell. And that’s when I was like “oh this film is something special” because my mom rarely swears. Parasite managed to elicit that raw response from her that I haven’t seen since. After the movie, we just sat in silence in the car, processing what we just saw. Then, the analyses came in. She texted me message after message about the motifs and symbols she found in the film for the next month or so. Director Bong created a masterpiece.

No one has ever been more deserving of a cigarette than Jessica on the toilet.

Parasite is such an enjoyable film for cinephiles. Bong really showcased his mastery of this craft here. The cinematography and editing of this film is top notch plus the music makes the whole experience exhilarating. Song Kang-ho (poor father) deserve an Oscar nomination for this in my opinion. His acting during the flood scene and the finale is so nuanced and believable that you sympathize with him even if he’s a bad person. But the good thing about this movie is that it has no villain. Everyone is gray. I watched this film in a microtheater so we were really few and so close to each other. It was the last film I watched in theaters before pandemic and it is such an unforgettable experience.

I've shown Parasite to a few friends now and it always unfolds the same way: initial disinterest shortly followed by utter intrigue & immersion in the ensuing chaos. This movie is a RIDE.

What I liked about the film is that the poor family is portrayed as smart and cunning and just as capable of being successful if given the chance.

My favorite scene is, when the stone, that promises future wealth, floats up in the water. This shows that the stone is hollow/not real and therefore the idea of being able to gain wealth or class (without hard work) is an illusion.

The peach sequence is one of my favorite film things ever. Perfectly executed montage that makes getting the 4th family member in non-repetitive with the bonus that Song Kang-Ho is a legend, so there's irony in Choi "teaching" him to act. It'd be like going back to Civil War and having Tom Holland teach Robert how to be a superhero

The smell is a metaphor for the stigma of being from low class in society. Korea is very culturally ingrained with the idea of social classes and distinction. Low class people can never ever get rid of the "smell" of being from being in low class, no matter how rich they become in life.

You guys need to watch 'Old Boy' and 'Memories of Murder' for sure. These two movies had been originally ranked top 250 at IMDB, way before Parasite was made. Like others, I highly recommend those two movies and you won't be disappointed at all. yes the stairs are very important in this film. but my favorite visual detail is the lines. Mr Park is all about his lines and them being crossed or not. and if you pay attention, when the family (and the housekeeper lady too) is interacting with the Parks there's always a vertical line drawn between them. and when the family crosses the line figuratively they literally cross the actual line too. for example, when Ki-Woo is reading in the garden he's actually lying horizontally across the vertical line drawn by the glass door. or when the housekeeper wakes up Mrs. Park in the beginning of the film, she actually crosses the line drawn by the window to clap at Mrs Park. when the father visits Mr Park at his office there's a line drawn by the glass room devider and he doesn't cross it.

To explain the perfection of this film would take hours. You could write several papers on all of the motifs in Parasite and the significance of all of it. Rick wasn't kidding when he said he knew this film, this movie is used in film school as a textbook. Pay particular attention to the use of height and the dividing lines. This is one instance where the Academy got it very right. This movie deserves every award.

Ki-Woo (Kevin) was also the baseball player (Yong-guk) in Train to Busan.

This is one of the most disturbingly beautiful movies I’ve ever seen! It made my heart race like no other movie ever has. So many symbolic themes told through filmmaking, absolutely masterful. It’s more than well deserving of all of the awards that it won, truly a 10 out of 10 movie. Another great Korean movie is ‘I Saw the Devil’.

I always loved that Parasite and Joker came out at the same time from two totally different areas in the world, both commentating on societal structure and the injustice to the lower class. It goes to show how messed up the world is and how there are people screwed by the system in every society

The song at the end is called "564 years" because that's how long it would take Ki-woo to save up the money to buy that house

speaking of Train to Busan, the actor who plays Ki-woo also played the baseball player in Train to Busan. he did such an incredible job in this movie! ❤️

the question about the toilet being so high up in their basement apartment is a fascinating one, and has a very interesting tie to one shot during the father's note to ki-woo (kevin). the reason their toilet is so high up is because they live in what's called a basement or subbasement apartments, and the kim's are in such a bad situation that their apartment is BELOW the sewer line. their toilet has to be up so high for them to be able to use the sewer system properly. that's also why when it rains, it overflows. however, when mr. kim retreats to the basement at the end, he notices that the bunker toilet is at ground level, and still flushes properly. this kind of illustrates JUST HOW well to do the park's are. even their war bunker toilet, two levels down from their "ground floor", works perfectly, and is above the sewer line. there's also a line from ki-woo when ki-jung (jessica) is in the bathtub. he notes that she's the only one in their family that actually looks like she could live and thrive in a place like the park's home. and technically, because he is the breadwinner of the household, mr. park is the only member of the park family who truly belongs in that home. and in the end, they're the two that actually die, alongside geunsae (the husband from the basement). eventually, ki-jung of the poor family, mr. park of the rich family, and geunsae who's hiding from debtors, all end up on the same level. ("the only place where heathers and marthas can get along, is in heaven.") and yeah, you're right about **some** of the subtitles being different. obvious the "miranda rights" portion is not directly translated in order to appeal to a western audience, as well as when mr. kim asks "does oxford offer a course in forgery", the actual translation for "oxford" is a very prestigious university in seoul. but again, most americans or western audiences wouldn't have any reference to how prestigious that school might be, if it weren't tied to a well known university in the west. there's a lot of little things like that used in many subtitled films and shows.

Fun fact: The song that plays during the credits is called Soju One Glass. The lyrics basically implies what happens to Ki-Woo, which is that he tries to make money to buy the house but realizes that it is literally impossible to achieve in his lifetime even if he follows the basic rules like going to college and getting an actual job because of his status.

I would encourage people to read further about the movie! I'm glad Aaron didn't want to land on poor people are parasites. I would also encourage people not to think of the parasite metaphor quite so unilaterally. It could be said that the wealthy family and everyone in their class are exploiting people who have way less than them although they can afford frivoloties. Their wealth is directly and indirectly responsible for the poverty of the exploited classes. One thing I noticed is that even though the family didn't clean up well, it's not really noticed or mentioned because cleaning isn't part of the wealthy family's routine. It's something they outsource. But the father notices, despite having enough food to feed 6 people without a lack, that the housekeeper was taking more than what he felt should be her fair share.

eric looking up trivia right after the movie makes me so happy, I do the exact same thing most of the time and it brings a lot to the discussion. this was a really thoughtful movie that's doing and saying a lot with every moving part and i'm glad a lot of the nuances of it didn't get lost on y'all. this is probably up there in my list of 'perfect' movies. a dear friend took me to watch it for the first time with me not knowing anything about it, and I could see the same feeling of "oh god oh fuck" from the midpoint turn onwards that I felt coming off you guys. that shot of the guy ascending the stairs eyes-first was burned into my brain too.

I saw someone post once and they said something along the line of, “Imagine living in a place where the toilet sits higher than you.” That blew my mind.

Well damn. I've been meaning to watch this movie for so long, and I never did. Then this reaction happens and I finally watched it (full length with the Blind Wave Crew, of course). And I'm so grateful, because it is one of the best movie experiences I've had in as long as I can remember.

I saw this in London and the director Bong Joon Ho was there for a Q&A - he is a creative genius! Hearing him talk about this film blew my mind! He’s never made a bad film in my opinion, this is my favourite of his work currently, but I think you guys would also love his films Snowpiercer (his dystopian sci-fi film starring Chris Evans) The Host (his incredible monster movie) and Memories of Murder (his murder mystery film) Also in the Q&A Bong Joon Ho said the son will never be able to afford that house, he said he even tried to figure out the maths and there’s no possible way.

He didn't betray his country. The mandatory military service is only 2 years (~20 months). It is every male from ages 18-28. And men can wait until they're 28 before enlisting, but it has to be done by 28. And no, you can't buy your way out of it. Some people who are considered of artistic/cultural value can apply for extensions (think opera singers or classically trained musicians/artists/dancers or people who discover medical or scientific breakthroughs, etc). K-pop artists do not fall under that criteria though. Edit: the Miranda Rights they were saying were different in Korean. They have their own version. It was translated so as to make more sense for an English audience.

Korean-American here. Thought I would chime in on some cultural aspects and responses to some of your questions in the video, including how I think the ending is reflective of Korean culture 1. Parasite’s ending & Korean “han”: It’s said that all Koreans are born with “han,” which doesn’t have an English counterpart. Han embodies several emotions in a single word = long-lasting & deep-seated melancholy, regret, suffering, anger, bitterness, a feeling of injustice and helplessness, resentment, an urge to exact revenge, but also resilience and a sense of hope for the future. Han apparently originated as a result of decades of Japanese occupation of South Korea, followed a few years later by the turmoil of the Korean War. When you look for it, you can see Han in various aspects of Korean culture, from “Arirang” (Korea’s national anthem) and other traditional Korean music, to its poetry and art, folk tales, and in TV and films. It’s not uncommon to see Korean films with bittersweet endings or those in which beloved protagonists die. When you see Koreans wailing loudly when a loved one dies, that is also an embodiment of Han. I have friends who thought that Parasite should have ended in the penultimate scene and that the ending scene wasn’t necessary. But I think that last scene makes sense from the Korean perspective of Han. The very last clip hearkens back to the opening scene of the film and situates Ki-woo back in the basement dwelling. Koreans know that it’s a pipe dream that he will ever earn enough money to purchase the house and reunite with his father. It will never happen. And we are left with Ki-woo clinging to a hope that will never be realized, which makes his letter (which his father will never receive) even more heartbreaking (“be healthy until then”). 2. As you guys pointed out in your reaction, Bong Joon Ho doesn’t portray the rich family as evil. Rather, it’s capitalism and the resulting class divide that is the antagonist. And this is something that really resonates with younger Koreans, who find it increasingly difficult to live comfortably in Korea. “Hell Joseon” (Hell Korea) is a common phrase that describes the struggle that young people face in finding well-paying employment, affordable housing, and upward economic mobility if they aren’t born with a “gold spoon.” 3. The prestige of American products (like the American-made tent): Although Korea now has a multitude of domestic luxury brands, American (ie, Western) goods are still highly coveted. Hence, the rich dad drives a Benz instead of an expensive Kia or Hyundai (Daewoo also was a luxury car, but I don’t think they sell that brand anymore). In the 80s and early 90s, certain Korean goods were considered to be of low quality, such as clothing, food and electronics. When we traveled to visit our relatives back then, we would bring instant coffee, American-made clothes, US brand electronics, etc as gifts. Although Korea now is vastly different economically, that mentality about American-made products may still linger. In any case, .Western luxury brands are still considered an easily recognizable signal of wealth and success (Rolex watches, Western car brands, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc). 4. Rich mom’s sporadic use of English: All Korean kids learn English beginning in elementary school through high school (reading, grammar, writing, speaking). That said, I think it’s fair to say that a significant number of Koreans don’t feel comfortable conversing in English. Although speaking English well isn’t necessarily a sign of wealth, families with financial means will send their kids to hagwons (after-school academies) to study more English, math, science, etc. to prepare for subjects on their college entrance exam (a grueling 8-hour test held only once a year). And engaging a private English tutor is the ultimate sign of privilege. For as long as I can remember, incorporating English words on cards and on clothing was popular in Korea. As a kid, I remember going to a stationary shop and seeing all these greeting cards with misspelled English words and sentences in English that made absolutely no sense. And kpop music loves injecting a smattering of English words and phrases. I always cringed when I would hear those songs as a kid. 5. Conscription: As you noted, military service is mandatory for all males. But the most common way to get out of military service is for physical or mental illness reasons, and there have been scandals involving the sons of rich families / politicians who bribed physicians to make up medical excuses to evade service. Koreans get enraged when news like this breaks. There is a former Kpop singer who is banned from entering Korea after he had publicly expressed his intent to serve in the military and then evaded conscription by becoming a naturalized US citizen.

Please fellas...if you haven't watched it yet: The movie Snowpiercer from the same filmmaker! Director Bong is a master at what he does. Watching people see Parasite for the first time is one of my favorite things.

The really brilliant thing about this movie is that you're never quite sure who you should be rooting for. Which means by the time all the twists start piling up, you truly have no idea where it's going.

When I first watched it I thought the fumigation was gonna turn the bugs in their house into some mutant radiated parasite monster and it would be a monster movie. I was so wrong and Im glad I was lmao, such a good movie

Great reaction! Bong Joon-Ho's films always have a statement on climate change. In Parasite you see how climate change just ruins the rich family's camping trip but to poor people living below ground level it's devastating. Their whole apt. is flooded. Bong Joon-Ho also said that unfortunately poor people often have to step on other poor people in their struggle to survive. They don't fight together to change the system of income inequality. Interesting that you say the poor family is worse than the rich family. I find willful ignorance of what's happening outside of your world to be the reason parasites can move in. The rich family was indifferent and that opened a door. Another recent film that explores this theme is New Order. Another powerful statement on how the rich classe's ignorance doesn't keep them safe.

I’m kind of surprised they didn’t realize that the word Parasite can apply to anyone in this film. The wealthy/privileged as well as the poor/desperate people.

Jessica’s death has a meaning. There’s an analysis about this I watched years ago, statistics says that women who came from poor families have a higher chance of becoming rich either from marrying a rich man or by trying to break the glass ceiling, but since women are treated unequal to men especially in the workplace, this becomes a double barrier to them. While men who came from poor families have less chance of becoming rich. I think that’s why Bong decided to kill Jessica in the end, to show us that it’s still very much prevalent that there’s a lot of barriers to break in order to be a rich man. Especially if you’re a woman.

42:20 Military Service in SK is mandatory for all males 18-28, women are not mandatory but can still join the military if they wish too. There are some exemptions, medical reasons, some classical musicians and sports stars have in the past received an exemption. However to answer Rick, rich people cannot buy their way out of service, it is actually illegal for any man to try and get out without good reason and it's called Draft Evasion. Military Service can be post-poned, K-pop group BTS have all had their military service post-poned. This comes from SK seeing MS as a tradition and something to make your country proud, BTS of course, being worldwide famous and bringing in billions of dollars of revenue to SK's economy, have made their country proud in a different way. There is still a debate for whether they and other idol singers can get full exemption. Sorry to be conveluted but basically Rick, no rich people can't buy their way out of MS lol.

"Oh man! This wife wants DRUGS!" This has to be the funniest line I've ever heard in a long time.

Who is the parasite? because all we saw in this movie were the poor people doing the actual labor. So the title of this movie has a double meaning too. The rich might just as well be the parasite living off the work that is done by people from 'lower social class'. From what research I have done about this movie it seems an intentional double meaning.

I was blown away by this movie a couple of years ago. Despite the immense hype that surrounded it leading into the awards season, it exceeded any expectations I had. I remember watching every interview I could with Bong Joon Ho and discovering additional layers. His translator became a minor celebrity as well, beautifully articulating everything he was trying to convey.

These guys are just the best reactors. To Marvel, Star Wars, animation, Oscar winning films, dumb comedies, just everything. They have the best reactions and the most insightful commentary along with great chemistry. It’s why I’ve stayed subbed with them since 2017

42:30 yes you can buy your way out if you have powerful parents. This was an issue in South Korea where children of conglomerates and politicians were able to get exemptions from military service or getting office duties instead of active military duties even though they don't have health problems. However, this would affect your image negatively if the public found out. If the parents are politicians, they might be petitioned to leave office, etc. Celebrities who tried to get the exemptions by faking illnesses, or doing other illegal means would basically have their careers ended if the public ever found out. For the general public, it is compulsory, so it is a big deal. Celebrities who did active duties, esp if they served in the air force/special force, would basically earn free-cancellation cards as long as they never commit any crimes for the rest of their careers. The only legal way to get an exemption other than if you have health issues is for athletes who are able to win medals at international competitions (Olympic, Asian Games). They usually will get exemption from military service since they need to compete during their peaks (their 20s). There has also been a question about whether BTS (the kpop band) should get an exemption or not because they have won many international awards, and if they have to do their military service now, there will be a hiatus in the band activities going forward.

Watched this movie blind with a friend and by the end we had each other’s hands in a death grip, we were so shook. The cake/ghost scene freaked me out more than anything I’ve watched before. Absolutely incredible film

I fell in love with Korean Cinema with the 2002 The Way Home, then The Host in 2006, Train to Busan also in 2016 and then Parasite. I've been recommending these movies for years and nobody wanted to watch b/c of the subtitles. The action is so good in all of them that two inch barrier is a non factor in enjoying the stories. I'm so glad you watched this......now tackle The Host...you won't be disappointed.

There are bit more detail you can find if you are able to read Korean. For example, 1) There are books about account, laws etc in the bookshelf at the basement where the crazy guy lives.. Which means that he wan't just a crazy guy.. he was also highly educated person.. - which director Bong trying to send the message that being rich and poor is also effects by circumstances... 2) Reason for the toilet is highter than basement ground, cuz of the water pressure level.. some of very old houses in korea basement toliet had to build that way, so that they get enough water pressure to flush the toliet..however, thesedays they don't build that way... 3) Gi Taek's family used to be middle class family, and father has small business before they become con-artists... That is reason why they weren't used to eating at the cheap public buffet... 4) The Jjappaguri.. (RamenUdon.. in traslation) is cheep food, which the rich wife eat also well,.. and says that she haven't ride on the subway for a longtime... which means that she wasn't rich before she married to the successful man... and they are spoiled, can't maintain their luxury life without poor people serves them... which also they are in parasite position in someway... etc.... this movie has so many metaphors.. which gives us a listen that anyone can be a parasite by unfortunate circumstances...

Calvin saying "Oh she dead" is the best thing ever 😂😂😂

I'm still blown away every time I see this movie. This is going to be a timeless classic, it feels straight up Shakesperean in the way that it's crafted and executed. Quite literally with that ending, that ending got real Macbeth-y, REAL quick. This is the movie that I use as the standard for a 10/10 now. It's absolutely brilliant.

I didn't watch this until their reaction and what first blew me away is how it was shot and the cinematography. There always seemed to be a feeling of dread and uneasiness the way this film was shot. Take out the story and it's still a masterfully directed film. I'm not surprised why this film won a ton of awards including best picture.

After watching squid game and this movie, I am now scared of Korean debt collectors

This movie was so deserving of Best Picture. It was the first movie in a long time that I was just simply blown away. I was so happy that it exploded in the post Oscar ceremony window.

The rich people are privileged enough to not have be horrible, while the poor have to fight amongst themselves and “kill” each other to survive and get a chance to move up in the world
