Knowing the battery current drain limits will be important to confirm whether you have a parasitic draw or not (aka quiescent current draw). Most vehicles all around the same value of current drain, usually measured in milliamps. We also look at what value you are expecting on the multimeter amp setting as this can sometimes be confusing. If you get the right information from the customer, regarding how long the vehicle takes to drain, you will get a good idea of how big the parasitic draw is and give you better expectation of the battery current drain value.

I'm taking the oscilloscope course and it is amazing. I highly recommend it if you are interested in learning how to use an oscilloscope for diagnostics, which, in my humble opinion, is a necessity for the complex systems on modern vehicles.

I purchased the small original 2204a and after signing up for the course. I learned so much that I purchased the Pico 4 channel 4425a for a little over 3k. Very happy learning my new equipment.

That’s great to hear. Such a powerful tool And the 2204a will teach you a lot, plus you will appreciate the 4425 more 👍

Excellent explanation Darren! It's a good topic to discuss with a range of testing procedures. Keep up the good work. It'd be great to catch up one day 😉

Nice video and needed knowledge A rule of thumb for parasitic drain is reserve capacity divided by 4 but OEM is best CHEERS

Covers an important topic that is sometimes not fully understood in terms of preparation and correct use of test instruments. I have no doubt people that use you courses will be much better equipped in dealing with complex diagnostics.

Thanks Colin, I often come across minor errors or misunderstandings when people perform this test 👍

I run my multi meter on the 10 amp fuse. I don't need to see lower draw than that. Blowing the fuse in your meter as always a pain. Problem comes when you locate the an excessive draw on a circuit that powers many different things on the car. Example the backup fuse in an acura tl. If you don't know that the handsfree ecu goes bad and stays on causing a 220 milliamp draw you might never find the problem.

Agree with your range. I have always used 40mA rule of thumb regardless of vehicle. Less than that is perfectly fine and if it's more than that I look for a modification drawing extra current, like an aftermarket sound system or security system, pull the fuse and recheck draw. 40mA will also run the starter at two weeks but not 4 weeks with smaller batteries(75% discharged), and will be hit or miss with mid size batteries(50% discharged). Size counts. A puny 40Ah battery shouldn't have a massive 65mA draw.

I have an unrelated question. What if you’re using PicoScope leads set on 10 attenuation and you plug it into a 20 attenuator. Will you get 30 or what will happen?

Sir what is the law for battery discharge day ?
@thebluelunarmonkey
@thebluelunarmonkey 9 месяцев назад
Simple. 24 hours in a day. Multiply current draw by 24 to get mAh or Ah draw. 1 amp constant draw for 1 hour is 1 amp hour (Ah). The number I've typically used for normal parasitic draw is 40mA. That is 40mA x 24 hours = 960mAh or 0.96Ah. For a smaller AGM battery that's 40Ah capacity, you'll completely discharge the battery in 40 days. Most starting batteries will advertise CCA and not Ah since they are never meant to be discharged, their purpose is to deliver cranking amps for a short time before being recharged. Completely discharging a starting battery will damage it.
