Welcome to another session in a webinar speaker series from co-investigators on our PARC study. This video features Dr. Peter Rosenbaum from McMaster University presenting "The F-Words for Child Development: What the 'F' is THAT About?", where he describes a major sea change that is happening in the field of child-onset developmental issues, spurred in part by the W.H.O.'s ICF framework for health, and accelerated by CanChild's F-Words animation of these ideas.
In his presentation, Dr. Rosenbaum (i) outlines the background 'context' that has informed our thinking about childhood disability; (ii) contrasts those (traditional) ideas with modern concepts and some evidence to support them; (iii) illustrates the 'F-Words' ideas and how they are being used around the world by parents, service providers, service programs and governments; and (iv) left time for a collegial discussion, questions, everyone's challenges! (That's how he says he learns.)
PARC is the Pediatric Autism Research Cohort, a study running at multiple sites across Canada where we are following young children with a new autism diagnosis over time to explore factors that can impact various developmental pathways. The study is looking to better understand individual and environmental factors that can affect how children develop communication, socialization, and emotional and behavioural skills - and by doing so, generate evidence needed for more personalized services and supports.
