Just a tip for the possibility of a run away mechanical Diesel engine, if after you have cut the fuel and the engine continues to run via consumption of its oil have a CO2 fire extinguisher available. One burst into the intake and the run away will immediately stop with no harm to the engine. Love the channel, keep up the great content.
This is known in marine engineering circles but a good tip for your average boaty. I'll pin it to the top in case it helps someone one day. Thanks for joining in with good info.
Free Range Sailing Had a runaway engine on my cat yrs back resulting in me getting severe burns to hand.Tried smothering intake with hand but unbeknown to me engine governor had jammed on start up and engine was actually running in reverse.Ie.exhaust was intake and intake was exhaust.Very scary moment as I was sitting behind motor adjusting gearbox at time..Luckly hatch above me.Recieved major burn to hand but avoided skin grafts due to excellent work by burns nurse who overrode doctors advice.Cant thank that nurse enough for standing up to the doctors.
You guys are an inspiration to all. I for one am currently restoring a 1981 Comet 20 Trailer Sailer and she is nearly finished. A lot of work has gone into her seeing one of the previous owners of her had cut out the central buoyancy tanks and turned the front tank into a water tank, then installed a huge 4 burner stove/oven, a cut down domestic 240volt freezer and a domestic kitchen sink plus a wall for the V berth with such a small opening I could hardly get through it. Well, all of it is gone now, rebuilt the tanks, new flooring and covers, all new wiring and so forth. One day I will take my wife around Australia on a bigger yacht but we will be heading anti-clockwise so we can go with the wind and not against it. I do hope you guys can get down to Victoria so we can meet up. The closest port to us if Port Fairy or Geelong as we are in Camperdown. Oh, we also sail on Lake Purumbete and Lake Bullen Merri which are two volcanoes that are now filled with water. Thanks for the videos and all the information within and take care guys.
Thanks Max. I have a lot of respect for what those little boats can accomplish. A good 4WD and a TS on a good trailer is a very attractive alternative to the common caravanning dream. Nice work on the restoration. Seaworthiness is often misunderstood and comes second to junky fitouts in too many cases. It will take a while but you can bet we're coming to Vic. We want to see all around Oz!
I am not a sailor but if we’re to be thinking of becoming one you would be the first person I would talk with for advice. I have loved the refit series and I look forward to the next chapter. Having said that I love watching you videos keep them coming. Stay safe
You two exude the demeanor of calm, cool and patience. I think you've tapped into how to teach patience...thank you for another great lesson in precision, finesse and methodical workmanship. And thanks for the shipping hook up. You two are legends!!
OK my friend, when are we going fishing again. Love your videos they are just flowing with info but I like the smile of you two hooking into a good fight. Stay Thursday my friends.
Sure am glad you guys are doing some really needed upgrades. We wanna keep you both safe so you can keep teaching and showing us all the skills and repair techniques !!! 😊👍👌⛵️🚣⚓️
I love Friday not TGIF but Free Range Sailing. Just to let you know I wish I could help you guys financially but divorce and subsequent heart attacks have emptied the coffers. Thank you for brightening my week (Fridays) and the effort you put into the vids. Troy; Stubbies = ✔ Jocks = ✖, not free ball sailing you will arouse the young ladies.
LOVE: to see the fuel line set up with filters. Q: have you thought about using regular truck diesel parts (water sep. vs racor) instead of marine parts? LOVE: to see the provisioning parts - especially more of the costs (bulk supply place vs. regular store bought), quality issues and storage. ALSO: why powdered coconut milk vs powdered milk? What do use for coffee?? (CoffeMate (blech - get at my car mechanic place - blech again) or condensed milk? --- I grew up in early 70's with American government powdered milk (completely disgusting as I remember) and government cheese ( actually the best for grilled cheese LOL)... I LOVE your how's and why's of doing what you do - - would love to see you guys here in City Island, Bronx, NY (Place where a lot of the America's Cup Yachts ( Enterprise, Independence. Courageous and Intrepid) were built) - which is within NYC.... my 450 lb mushroom mooring and access will be yours for as long as you want! (Will extend yacht yard discounts to you as I can manage through contacts too!!)... Zach
Im not certain that I fully understand your plumbing plan for your feul tanks but hey as long as it works .... Lol .... Ive always said leave it to an engineer to have a nightmare and come back to work so they can bring it to life .. 🙂 As for patients I am finding that the older I get the harder it is for me as a child I coukd sit on a river bank all day long waiting for a bite and I just dont have that kind of patients anymore ... I miss that Hopefully by the time you have read this you will have made all of your repairs and are under way to your new adventures. .. 🌹❤🌹
"Land perks" great video, thanks from Arkansas. What's the lures you like from Ft. Smith? I'll hook you up with your favorites! For real! Keep cruisin'!!
I was looking at your main sheet arrangement where the traveler runs in front of the companionway with just a small gap. How practical is that. The reason I ask is I currently have my main sheet traveler running just in front of the tiller, ( where it used to have a wheel) and the traveler blocks access through the cockpit and the main sheet drags over the main genoa winches. I was thinking of moving the traveler onto the cabin top but that is not ideal from a main leach tension point of view or to a location similar to yours. I will mainly be doing short handed sailing or sailing with novices, I might race her a bit later , but not too seriously. I was wondering if you narrow gap was a nuisance?
In terms of a sailing setup I like it a lot. The mainsail shape is easy to tweak and there's no twisting your back to handle lines while looking up. The flaked down mainsheet sits nicely under that rail and runs straight up into its jammer without snarling. From the point of view of living aboard, it does get in the way but we don't notice it till we have guests. Mirrool is a poor entertaining boat for many more reasons than that though.
You didn't put a warning on the whole food store... The freeze dried milk chocolate covered strawberries for sale there are just sooooooo moorish! When is the cook book coming out?
Pascale's dips made me hungry! And that ringtail possum is a star. :) As for electric, I'd go diesel AND electric with enough solar (minimal batteries). I found it interesting recently to see Australia's marine transport emissions going down while every other industry is going up! Same number of boats but more efficient engines as they get replaced perhaps?: thedriven.io/2019/03/06/the-truth-of-australia-transport-emissions/ FWIW, when there isn't sun or wind for your electric boat like in the gorges you describe, there are also Direct Methanol Fuel Cell systems Telecoms use, eg. the 48V EFOY Pro 12000 Duo (12 kWh per day) that probably cost twice as much as a diesel and are harder to find fuel for, or petrol generators.
Marool is looking good you two! So, once the repairs and upgrades are complete, where will we be off to next? Thanks for the consistently excellent content...
UNFAIR! YOUR Possums got Fur on their tails! And they're Cute. Our possums got naked tails, like Rats. NASTY. OMG! You're getting a new Anchor windlass?! Legend...
Pascale, how about an episode where you go through every cooking utensil in the galley. What you have and what you like/dislike about it. The things that you used to have but got rid of (and why), and things (galley related) you have seen on other boats that you would like to have, or at least try.
Sitting around in your undies doesn't constitute as "boat porn", just saying! - As for Arnold's boat shop, I've used them for a number of years now and their service and good advice is second to none. Thank's you two for another great video. :-)
Hi Troy and Pascale, I have been a subscriber for a while, but today I also became a Patreon. Why? Because I think you are the best sailing channel out there! I have dreamt about untying the lines for 20+ years, but career, kids and familystuff kind of got in the way. Unfortunately I have not been able to convince the rest of my family that discovering the world from a sailboat is the best way to live a life, but now my sons are grown up and my wife busy pursuing her own career goals, so soon, very soon, I will leave cold Norwegian winters behind and start living my dream. And because I found your channel about a year ago I´ve decided I will start this adventure in and around Australia not in the Caribbean, US, South America as first intended. Not necessarily follow in your footsteps, but I just HAVE to see and discover the Kimberleys, Northern territory and the Great barrier reef my self. Thank You for the inspiration!!
Thank you Hans for your very kind words and we wish you luck on this new adventure! We will be very happy to answer any questions you have about sailing here. If you post on the Patreon page a question, our answer may help another or perhaps one of our other contributors has better knowledge on the subject than we do. Good luck and our best wishes for your family.
Long time sub but I don't comment often and I don't miss a video. I love your tech videos. You both have a great way about explaining things without making people feel stupid. Thanks for all you both do. Be safe and happy sailing.
Ill say it again. Trent and Brian from Delos can fix anything. Would love to see the two crews join up. Record a couple boat projects, make some gourmet meals, do some diving, and do some exploring.
It’s been said by many but.....Best channel I’ve found. Now that I’ve caught up, I miss watching 3-4 episodes in a sitting. While the wait is too long and the episodes go by too fast....I wouldn’t miss it.
I'd not even considered it possible to have your solar panels shaded out of operation on a boat. But there you go, hey? And some of my planned adventures will find significant shade, now that you mention it. Also, I now have a ships chandlers in my boat favorites folder. Looks like they have a decent range, and even without the FRS discount, their shipping fees seem good.
Awesome work Troy, it's a good thing you're handy! And a sailor!! Pascale can sure cook up or put together some tasty looking meals in the galley, you two are quite a pair! Cheers
can you consider quick shut-off valves on fuel tanks. These are mandatory on classified vessels for fire safety reasons. I really think its a very good thing for every boat.
So nice to see some totally hands on sailors. BTW looks like a beautiful stainless tank to me make sure it gets repurposed .Soldering the lines was a dangerous folly though,
Thanks guys, we hope you realize that we appreciate all you do to share your adventures. From your fans here in central Florida, we love y'all. Smooth sailing ⛵💞🐾
Solder is not intended for mechanical strength and should not be used for that. Depending on the metals used, either silver solder or brazing would have the strength needed on that application. Not too sure if I would trust the epoxy materials on the market now. Guess besides starting to get old, I am old-fashioned! Do love your videos! >
@@FreeRangeLivingI was referring to the repair the PO made on the metal tank, not what you were doing. I have had very mixed result using plastics to repair metals. I have had reasonable success on pores metals, cast-iron &c., but not on dense metals, stainless &c. Plastic repairs to plastic is a different story, good repairs. Solder is not a mechanical repair as used on the metal tank as you discovered. Have a good one. >
Pascale could do a food cooking channel for the sailing world! Who else was thinking, don't touch those grapes because you will mess up the picture for the magazine! ,,,,,,/),,,,,,
Hi Troy and Pascale, bit of a fan post here... I have S/V Delos, Sailing la Vega Bond in my subscriptions but you guys are my go to when new ep's are realeased. In an increasingly popular RU-vid genre, your vids imo as I could best describe as quality organic. Troy's quality knowledge and workmanship on your vessel, and Pascale's videography and organic food preparations are inspiring. Last year I purchased a sailing vessel in the Caribbean and sailed it back to Australia and 1 tool, out of all the bleeding edge tools I brought which turned out to be supprisingly useful was an endoscope, you can get them for about $20 online. I believe you are both around the sunshine coast at the moment, but if you are in the area around easter we are planning to head from gold coast to fraser and potentially lady Musgrave, would love to meet you both. PM me. Cheers
Yeah cool. We will be sailing north from Brisbane start of June to explore that region. Feel free today g'day if you see us. We'll go spear a couple of fish or have a beach fire.
Hi Troy, Would a scupper flap valve on the exhaust take care of the need to shut off a valve in a following sea? I'm sure you've considered that already, just wondering. Keep on keeping on. You two are literally living the dream.
We've never yet had to use that valve as the hose is routed up as high as the underside of the deck before arcing down. It's just for rare events of particularly nasty water and then just about everything will get shut.
Could you use thermolite for making replacement water tanks? My aluminum tanks are noisy(no baffles). I replaced the holding tank which was easy, but the water takes will need to be cut up to be removed and it would be nice to build new ones to fit the space exactly or even fiberglass it to the hull or bulkheads so nothing vibrates or rubs against things.
We are looking at bladder tanks to replace our built in tanks but yes it could. It's just a type of substrate for fibreglassing over that has none of the vulnerability of plywood- at a price.
I also need to replace my morse controls that one does look nice what model and brand is it please? Yeah cute possum but not so well loved here in NZ where they are a major pest.
Thanks for the nice tunes. Really liking that Liam Thomas track. Were you also the ones that also turned me on to Billy Fox? another Ozzy that I'm diggin''.
G'day Troy, can you tell me which actual model of engine control you used from Arnolds, i have an old Yanmar gm30 in our Cav 32 and need to replace our controler as well, cheers 👍👍
Thanks you two! I always look forward to Thursday’s and your videos. You tell us and show us. Too many others talk things to death. Some folks think they need to repeat themselves three and four times. If we don’t get it the first time we can watch it again...really. Love your videos. They are concise to the point and clear. Thanks!
Hello to two of the most awesome and beautiful people in the world 🌎.We love your channel and episodes. We love you both and your work.Stay safe on the waters
The draw of the sea is so intoxicating, I can feel the joy from both of you now that you have re-floated Mirrool, granted your in the marina but smiles and bright eyes again. Me too.
It's a good thing you're handy in repairs because if you had all that done the price tag would have been huge. Wishing you the very best as you get your lovely boat ready to sail.
Everything is starting to look Shipshape, Very soon Troy will be sitting back twiddling his thumbs wondering what he can repair next.......... NOTHING...........
