Hello, great video! Do you maybe know if parental allowance counts from the day the child was born or the day the child was registered in germany (let's assume both parents live in germany before the child's birth). Thank you in advance!
Thanks for the comment ☺️ parental allowance (Elterngeld) starts form the day the child was born. With the exception of the birth mother. If the birth mother is receiving maternity pay (Mutterschaftsgeld), the parental allowance (Elterngeld) starts when the maternity pay ends, but the time that starts on the birth date and goes until the end of the maternity pay, already counts for the parental allowance.
If you are paying taxes in Germany through your employment, you are eligible for parental leave and parental allowance (and maternity leave and maternity pay) it doesn't matter where the delivery takes place ☺️ wish you all the best!
thank you for the information. I just have a question. so there is Maternity leave which is 8 weeks (paid) after giving birth and also the parents should apply directly for the Elterngeld. is that mean that there are 2 months overlapping? or the mother should apply for the Elterngeld after the 8 weeks of Maternity Leave? and in this case, she will be allowed for the basic 12 months Elterngeld or only 10 months?
Months in which you receive maternity benefits for the same child count as months with basic parental allowance (one of the 3 types of Elterngeld). This means that if the maternity allowance is higher than the parental allowance, you will only receive the maternity allowance (Mutterschaftsgeld). If the parental allowance is higher, you'll get the difference in the form of parental allowance. Answering to your question, in practice it would be only 10 months basic parental allowance, but the 2 months maternity allowance count as basic parental allowance also, so officially those are 12 months of "Basiselterngeld". You'll need your baby to be born to apply for Elterngeld, and the deadline for the Elterngeld application is when your baby reaches 3 months old. I hope these information clarified you, and let me know if I can further help.
