I remember wanting to see this movie when I saw the trailer. I was 8 at the time. For some reason, my parents took my older sister and me to see it. Most of the adult parts flew over our heads. However, mom and dad had to work hard to explain the ear cleaner scene.

I saw "Parenthood" around 13 and was initially confused by the ear cleaner seen. But then when it's referenced again later in the film, I put it together.
This film inspired me to be the parent I strive to be today. All of their individual strengths are incorporated into how I mold my children while the weaknesses are characteristics I acknowledge in myself and hopefully correct.
This movie was stacked with a great cast. Steve Martin, diane weist , Rick moranis, Jason robards , Joaquin Phoenix, Martha plimpton, Keanu Reeves Tom hulce ( who was a big name in the 80s) what an all star cast. Joaquin before he hit puberty him had such a crush on him and his late brother river. I wonder why he changed his name from leaf to Joaquin. Surprised Martha is a carradine her uncle was bill in kill bill HRT other uncle played Lewis from revenge of the nerds. Interesting fact she wore a wig in the movie bc she had just shaven her head for a previous part. So many connections to river in the film Joaquin was his brother , Martha was his long time girl friend and he starred with Keanu in my own private Idaho Also steenburgen and plimpton played a mother and daughter in law and order svu
His real name is Joaquin. He changed it to Leaf as a child actor to be more like his siblings, who all had nature-themed names (e.g., River Phoenix). He went back to using Joaquin as a young adult.
This was the film that made people realize that Joaquin Phoenix wasnt just another child actor. He was going to be something really REALLY special. 6 Golden Globe nominations (2wins) 4 Oscar nominations (1win)
I saw this movie at least a hundred times back then and never saw anything special about either Keanu or Joaquin’s acting. Quite the opposite actually.
