CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When their son loses his retainer and goes into a fit, Gil (Steve Martin) and Karen (Mary Steenburgen) realize they need to make a change.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This feel-good ensemble comedy tracks a quartet of suburban siblings and their families over the course of a single summer. Hardworking Gil Buckman (Steve Martin) and his stay-at-home wife, Karen (Mary Steeenburgen), have just a few months to help their oldest son, Kevin (Jasen Fisher), overcome his high-strung behavior problems before he'll be relegated to special-education classes. Gil's difficult relationship with his own father, Frank (Jason Robards), has led him to become a would-be super-dad for his three kids, so he takes his son's difficulties more than a little personally. Gil's sister, Helen (Dianne Wiest), is trying to raise a moody, adolescent son (Leaf Phoenix) and an independent-minded daughter (Martha Plimpton) with no help from her well-off ex-husband, who's more interested in his new wife and family. Gil and Helen's sister, Susan (Harley Jane Kozak), meanwhile, must participate in the too-scripted Big Life Plans of her anal-retentive husband, Nathan (Rick Moranis), whose overachiever zeal infects even their toddler daughter. When long-lost brother Larry (Tom Hulce) show up with yet another get-rich-quick scheme, he brings with him a surprise addition to the family. Screenwriters Babaloo Mandel, Lowell Ganz, and Ron Howard negotiate their varied subplots with a deftness and comedic touch that transforms this conflicted clan into a suburban everyfamily.

I do recall going to our timeshare in Scotland which is very luxurious (we only get it for one week in Summer) and seeing a man who looked just like him. Same height (Steve is about 6 feet tall), grey hair and much older than even my father. I really thought it was him so I went up to him and told him that I loved his movies and he was one of my favourite actors. This man laughed, thanked me for the compliments but told me that he wasn’t Steve Martin. My parents who were with me laughed as did this man. I then told him, that I still thought he was awesome. A few days later, I saw my Dad and him talking in the main bar over some drinks and they got on well. I guess my Dad made a friend because of me.

Actually pretty poor. I love him but I think he is really weak in dramatic roles, he is charismatic but he is not the character, he keeps just his comic stuff putting it more into sentimental vibe. Compare with John Candy in their movie together. Candy really made it like he was that guy, and Steve just did his common chops. I still like him though but I would not overestimate it

That sucks sorry to hear how your Dad was to you, I think Gil was right to tell his Dad to shut up because it wasn't his place to tell Kevin to tell Kevin what to do and I find Frank Gil's Dad didn't think as to what the other kid is capable of doing to Kevin if he were to go up to him to get his money back. Poor Kevin I don't blame him for crying hysterically because one thing was happening after another and he couldn't take it anymore and all he wanted was to have a good time. I really like how his Parents did the best to comfort him even if it caused a scene and the good thing was no one was laughing because it's not funny when one thing after another goes wrong and with what happened to Kevin losing his retainer and everyone around them were concerned for Kevin and his family.

One autistic person is not like another autistic person. My daughter went between handling things calmly to full on meltdowns. Have you had him seen? Perhaps he has some anxiety? So many kids and adults do. As an adult and advocate with anxiety I can tell you that patience, support and love is crucial. It is very important to try and get your child to communicate WHY they are feeling a certain way. People make fun of "being seen" "being heard" but it means everything when you feel understood, validated and that other people have the same feelings. A lot of times we get anxious about how other people perceive us or our talents we think it is negative when most of the time people don't feel that way at all. I can tell from your short comment that you are a loving parent and a good one.

This exact same thing happened with my little brother when he was at school. He took it out during lunch in the cafeteria and then forgot it was on his tray. My mom ended up coming into school with rubber gloves and went through the trash to find it (she made him help too). In the end it was found and I think she probably just put it through the dishwasher a couple of times which would’ve sanitized it.

@TJ Strader Perhaps they were going to at least find it because Kevin really wanted it found especially with all his screaming so maybe Gil and Karen felt they had no choice but to at least find it. I loved this movie when I was 12 and I still do. I think it's significant for US studies in that it shows the flip sides to parenting in the USA. On one hand, the father wants to get ahead in the corporate world, but at the same time that would mean not being around his kids as much. In a country without cradle-to-grave socialism, you have to pay for healthcare, college, daycare, etc. If your kid has special needs, then you end up paying for the therapy, tutoring, and other accommodations.

Not quite, sugar. Kevin's therapy would be paid for by insurance. The company Gil works for would have that plan already and it would also pay for medications. Academically much of that is taken care of by law with an IEP. A doctor would examine him and decide what he needs in class, go to the administration, discuss it, and Kevin would be on his way. For example, the plan for Kevin could include retiring to a room where he can calm himself down if he has to and the only thing required is for him to bring his schoolwork with him to finish it and meet teachers after school if there is anything he missed.

When my sweet love, Johnny and I live together, if we ever have children, we're gonna make sure that they have respect for all of humanity, that they love people of all colors, and that they treat others the way they want to be treated. Most importantly, sweet love and I will teach our children that yes, they may have shortcomings, as we all do, but through all the unexpected twists and turns on this road of life, love should be the most important priority for them. What's more, you don't need the silly nonsense that is religion to know what love is. We teach love through cultural diversity, and one thing I advise of anyone, if we love one another, appreciate nature's gifts, and give peace a chance, this world will be a better place for us all! When Johnny and I live together, we will also make sure that there are lots of wonderful activities for all of us to do together. We'll make our house a safe haven for the kids to live in love, and most important of all, to frolic and have fun!

He reminds me of me as a kid. Had bad anxiety and ADD. I also had a kindergarten teacher tell my parents she thought I was autistic. I can definitely identify with just wanting to leave. Being forced to confront some kid in front of everyone, or having my parents do it for me would have been more stressful than leaving. I also set things down and lose them all the time, which is so infuriating. Having something like that right after would have put me over the edge. Only difference is I wasn't allowed to throw any kind of tantrum and would have been punished harshly at the end, adding even more humiliation.

This scene is also why I ask her dad during her emotional fits "what happened? Did she lose her retainer?" I'm guessing I'm dealing with a person who is strong willed and it's hard to handle as a parent but when she's an adult she'll know exactly what she wants in life. That's my hope. What is Kevin's diagnosis today. In the movie the school wants to put him in special education. Is he just a very emotional child? I dont see how that would make the teacher and psychologist want to move him to special ed the principal tells the parents th at the class will finish behind bc the teacher spends 20 percent of her time on Kevin. I'm just curious what his issue is he doesnt seem to be add or autistic. Thanks if anyone has an idea.
@Eurodance90schick
@Eurodance90schick 3 года назад
I'm just guessing although I remember when in the scene while the parents were talking with the principle and the child psychologist Kevin's principle said "I recommend that he be sent to a school that offers special education classes for children with emotional problems". It could be possible that he could have bipolar disorder along with anxiety because the psychologist said "Kevin is a very sweet, caring, sensitive but an extremely tense little boy he's needs some special attention". I'm thinking also that Kevin maybe could've had a learning disability too as well to wear he needed a one on one aid in the special needs classes to help him out with his school work for emotional support. I could be wrong with what I'm saying I'm just guessing because his diagnoses isn't confirmed in the movie.

Because he’s OCD and probably somewhere on the spectrum... oh did you mean what specifically set him off? He lost his retainer.

@@shelbyvillerules9962 OCD and ASD are never mentioned in the film. He could just be a sensitive child who has difficulty regulating his emotions. Why medicalise/pathologize everything?
