The People's Report -- The Link Between Structural Violence and Crime in Wilmington Delaware
The People's Report is a pilot quantitative and qualitative ethnographic community needs assessment of the Eastside and Southbridge neighborhoods of Wilmington, Delaware. This study trained 15 community residents (ages 20-48), all of whom were formally involved with the streets and/or criminal justice system to be street participatory action researchers (PAR). PAR is the methodology in which members of the population being studied are included on the actual research team.
The Wilmington Street PAR family documented the relationship between structural opportunity and physical violence in the two aforementioned neighborhoods. Data were collected from mostly street-identified Black men and women, ages 18-35, in the following forms: (a) 520 community survey packets; (b) 24 individual interviews; (c) four dual interviews; and (d) four group interviews.
Ultimately, the project argues structural violence to be a major predictor of physical violence in these two neighborhoods in Wilmington, Delaware.
On Structural Violence: "Structural violence is a term commonly ascribed to Johan Galtung, which he introduced in the article "Violence, Peace, and Peace Research" in 1969. It refers to a form of violence where some social structure or social institution may harm people by preventing them from meeting their basic needs. Institutionalized elitism, ethnocentrism, classism, racism, sexism, adultism, nationalism, heterosexism and ageism are some examples of structural violence as proposed by Galtung. According to Galtung, rather than conveying a physical image, structural violence is an "avoidable impairment of fundamental human needs". As it is avoidable, structural violence is a high cause of premature death and unnecessary disability. Since structural violence affects people differently in various social structures, it is very closely lysoled to social injustice. Structural violence and direct violence are said to be highly interdependent, including family violence, racial violence, hate crimes, terrorism, genocide, and war." Wikipedia
About Participatory Action Research (PAR) :
Participatory action research (PAR) seeks to understand the world by trying to change it, collaboratively and reflectively. An alternative to positivism in science, this long-standing tradition emphasizes principles of collective inquiry and experimentation grounded in experience and social history. Within a PAR process, "communities of inquiry and action evolve and address questions and issues that are significant for those who participate as co-researchers" (Reason and Bradbury, 2008, p. 1).
PAR practitioners make a concerted effort to integrate three basic aspects of their work: participation (life in society and democracy), action (engagement with experience and history), and research (soundness in thought and the growth of knowledge) (Chevalier and Buckles, 2013, ch. 1). "Action unites, organically, with research" and collective processes of self-investigation (Rahman, 2008, p. 49). The way each component is actually understood and the relative emphasis it receives varies nonetheless from one PAR theory and practice to another. This means that PAR is not a monolithic body of ideas and methods but rather a pluralistic orientation to knowledge making and social change (Chambers, 2008, p. 297; see Allen, 2001; Camic and Joas, 2003; SAS2 Dialogue).
