🇫🇷 Le thème de cette exposition est l’union de l'Art et de la Technique : le Beau et l'Utile doivent être indissolublement liés. Dans un contexte de crise économique et de tensions politiques internationales, elle doit aussi promouvoir la paix mais sera le théâtre d’un affrontement symbolique entre l'Union soviétique stalinienne et l'Allemagne hitlérienne. Leur massif pavillon couronné de motifs sculpturaux monumentaux et agressifs, l'aigle nazi et un couple de kolkhoziens brandissant la faucille et le marteau, se font face de part et d'autre du pont d'Iéna.
La largeur du pont d'Iéna est doublée. Le palais de Chaillot remplace le palais du Trocadéro (exposition universelle de 1878) qui est détruit. Construction du palais de Tokyo (aujourd'hui Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris et Musée national d'art moderne).
Raoul Dufy peint “La Fée Électricité” pour le pavillon de la Lumière et Picasso expose “Guernica”, commandé pour le pavillon de l’Espagne Républicaine.
L’île aux Cygnes accueille les pavillons des colonies françaises et la réplique de la statue de la Liberté est tournée afin qu’elle regarde vers son illustre original de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique.
🇺🇸 The theme of this exhibition is the union of Art and Technique: the beautiful and the useful must be indissolubly linked. In a context of economic crisis and international political tensions, it must also promote peace but will be the scene of a symbolic confrontation between the Stalinist Soviet Union and Hitler's Germany. Their massive pavilion crowned with monumental and aggressive sculptural motifs, the Nazi eagle and a couple of farmers brandishing the sickle and the hammer, face each other on both sides of the pont d’Iéna.
The width of the bridge of Jena is doubled. The palace of Chaillot replaces the palace of Trocadero (universal exhibition of 1878) which is destroyed. Construction of the Palais de Tokyo (today Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris and National Museum of Modern Art).
Raoul Dufy paints “La Fée Électricité” for the pavilion of the Light and Picasso exposes "Guernica", ordered for the pavilion of Republican Spain.
L’île aux Cygnes is home to the pavilions of the French colonies and the replica of the Statue of Liberty is turned so that it looks to its illustrious original on the other side of the Atlantic.
