Paris loses the 2012 Olympic Games to London

At the time, the French officials were so unabashedly certain they would win over Madrid and London that they were all having their arms round each other's shoulders, like a winning team. 30 seconds later, no member of the "winning team" is anymore to be seen. Seems like somebody taught them a lesson in humility...
This was broadcasted live on French television.

It was a very humbling experience for the French. They went in that room thinking they had it in the bag over London. Same for New York 2012. The Americans were smug in their attempts and again in 2016 with Chicago. In the end, both France and the U.S. got their games in a single vote for 2024 and 2028 respectively. I look forward to Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.

Exactly. London 2012 were the best Olympics in my opinion (I am British so I'm a bit biased) Paris went into this bidding process believing they had already won it. Whereas London was seen as more unlikely however as history shows it was London that triumphed over Paris. The Americans were also very confident with New York given that they had successfully hosted in Atlanta less than a decade earlier. However in the long run all three of these countries will have their moment to shine. It's going to be a tall order to do better than London 2012 but both Paris and LA will do a spectacular job.

An 'Olympiad' is not decided on a video but on a bid. The Paris was better (The boss of the CIO said and could not understand the result) and would have cost less (turns out London cost 4 times the amount). Lobbying was the winner for sure.

At that time, I was hoping Paris would win. Me being a snob and self-righteous "intellectual", Paris was more appealing. And in my country, Great Britain was constantly criticised, ridiculed, being its colonial and imperial past. In a way, UK's past great success at imperialism and colonialism hinges its current reputation constantly. But as time went-by, I realised Britain is not a country to be looked down upon. On the contrary, it sways great influences around the world. And I think the 2012 Olympic Bid was an ultimate test that UK holds greater influence than France in a way.
@keeperofthecheese
@keeperofthecheese 8 лет назад
Plus you have to remember that the modern world would not exist without British imperialism. There was slavery and famine and murder, yes, and that is terrible, but without that past we would not be as close together as we are today. Australia, America, Canada, New Zealand, and even the face of Europe would all be very different without the commonwealth or the empire that preceded it and spread our axiology, our technology, our law and style of rule, trade and governance.

The truth is that London and Paris are both hugely cosmopolitan cities. The same goes for New York and Los Angeles. Cities in the far East, Latin America and Africa are decades away from having such a wide variety of colour and cultures. Globalization is very real, however, and we should all consider ourselves lucky to live in our own little melting pots :)

Paris would have stood a much better chance of winning the Olympics if it had not decided to celebrate victory BEFORE the official announcement was made. The decision by Paris to stage a victory parade on the Champs Elysees was duly noted by the IOC delegates and they did not like it one bit. The French expected to win this vote while the British expected to lose it. That's the difference between arrogance and humility, but the French never learn do they!

@AttackTheGasStation1 Germany invaded France in World War 1, and were successful. That's why France were so angry at the Treaty of Versailles. That's why France built a large number of defences after the war was over, in case it should ever happen again. France and England both won world war 1, but France WAS taken over, and England DID cross the channel to lend a hand. If it weren't for England, it's very likely that France would have been taken over completely. Don't argue with solid fact.

1/2 never ever be 100% sure of an olympic bid. being British, I can't put in words just how happy i was when we won this, even though deep down i thought Paris would just clinch it, nonetheless i always respected their bid, that was until their then president Jacques Chirac opened his mouth prior to the decision and really slated the UK 'can't trust them, look at their Beef, etc'. Now Tony Blair - like him or hate him, at least (and most world leaders) would have dignity and wouldn't slate

I was in Auckland, New Zealand when this was announced. It was a bit of a conciliation after the dismal performance of the Alison’s against the All Blacks.

L'Equipe - small mention on page 9. It then proceeded to criticise the British for having the medal ceremony for the marathon in the middle of the closing...which is actually a tradition in the Olympics. Le Parisan -the paper, no doubt still digesting sour grapes from 2005, accused British athletes cheating. It then rebuked the BBC for being too British. Huh?! Le Monde - warned that "London cannot escape the realities of the econmonic crisis". Am I missing something about life in France?

Athens wishes London to organise great Olympic Games, as the Greeks did in 2004!

Stop saying English ! People have to start realising our nation is Great Britain, it is Great Britain who won this.
