I love how she calls them "mes enfants". There must a really great relationship between teachers and students.

The narrator is saying that Danish ballet master Bournonville learned everything from the early French school of ballet, while French dancers were influenced by the virtuosic Italian school developed towards the end of the 19th century. She adds that French style nowadays is characterized by its elegance and very brilliant, precise technique. She finished saying that at the end of every class they bow as a way of showing respect towards the audience and their own profession.

This was my favorite tv documentary series growing up - I watched it so many times I wore out my vhs tapes. The series was the first time I saw Sylvie Guillem - Makarova introduced her as a new nineteen year old star on the show.

Bravo!!!

I love how delicate and relaxed their arms are when they dance -- so elegant! This style kind of resembles the vagnova style but maybe I'm wrong about this? Sometimes I just can't quite distinguish the difference. It looks like they move a little faster than the Russians... not sure though
@MarijeK
@MarijeK 8 лет назад
Love it as well, but it is quite different than what I am used to. I think the French school focusses a lot on musicality, more than Vaganova does. And it's quick, like Balanchine, and had the flow in the arms and upper body like Vaganova. I really like comparing styles, although every teacher brings something different, so you can't always put your finger on it.
@speteydog2260
@speteydog2260 6 лет назад
Yes I think the French are lighter on their feet and maybe more eloquent. But the Russian have their strengths too. They are strong and exact and their training. Some of those girls with their vaganova training have extensions and strength that are hard to believe.

@TheBallerina2000 Traditionally Repetto is worn as they supply for the Paris Opera Ballet's prima ballerinas, but other makers are being used more now (perhaps in part due to more internationally travelling dancers). However since this is an older video they are all probably supplied by Repetto xx

@DictatorIceCreamCone They are doing many tombes, pas de bourees, echappes, ballotes, pirouettes, releves, passes, and many, many, many others. The jumps that they do across the floor are called several different things depending on the syllabus, but two common names are saut de chat and grand pas de chat. The turns they do around in a circle are called pique turns en dedan. As to the difficulty of the steps, they are more or less advanced steps, though intermediate students would perform them

@MsOMyGosh Actually, you can play music without talent. I have played many instruments without talent - just a lot of hard work - and have known others the same way. I still got many compliments on my playing. Like I said, lol, hard work can get you wherever you want to go, it just takes more work obviously. :)
