"For everyone involved in the Paralympic movement, Stoke Mandeville represents sacred and cherished ground. It is here, a little over 76 years ago, that the visionary pioneer Sir Ludwig Guttman created the Paralympic movement. I don't know about you guys, but I can feel his presence here today, no doubt about it."

"It was a powerful and symbolic moment (lighting of the flame) for Paris 2024, to be here for the first time, Stoke Mandeville, where it all began for the Paralympic Games. I didn't know that story very well, so I'm delighted to discover it. I'm delighted to be part of this story and to discover this whole Paralympic family, which isn't the same as the Olympic family, but which is very committed and looking forward to coming to Paris next week. It's back to the drawing board and we can't wait to welcome them. We're delighted about that. And we can't wait for these Paralympic Games to begin.”

"We've kept the same ingredients, the same recipe for the Olympic Games: spectacular iconic sites, full stadiums, and the same determination to create a great atmosphere in the stadiums. We did a lot of work for the Olympic Games, which worked out rather well, and we'll be doing it again for the Paralympic Games."

STORYLINE:
The Paralympic flame was lit on Saturday in Stoke Mandeville, a village northwest of London, widely considered the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.
Two weeks after French star swimmer Léon Marchand extinguished the Olympic flame to close the Paris Olympics, the spotlight is now on its Paralympic counterpart.
Those later grew into the first Paralympic Games, which took place in Rome in 1960.
