About The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel:
In 1958 New York, Midge Maisel's life is on track- husband, kids, and elegant Yom Kippur dinners in their Upper West Side apartment. But when her life takes a surprise turn, she has to quickly decide what else she's good at - and going from housewife to stand-up comic is a wild choice to everyone but her. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is written and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls).

I don't know what you're on but that is the furthest from "brilliantly done" i can think of right now. I mean who just walks on stage and starts telling random guests of a *drag show* their boring american day-in-the-life-stories? She would've been kicked of the stage before she could finish her first sentence. This is so forced that it's cringe-inducing. The plot-convenience is unreal.

It can be, but the interpreter has to be AMAZING.
@missyquill5709
@missyquill5709 2 года назад
As a professional interpreter, I concur. I interpret across 7 to 8 languages (not French sadly) and have been doing CI and SI (what this lady is doing) for over 6 years and it's impossible without a pre scrip because oftentimes, the tone and structure don't come across until a sentence is fully spoken so either there is a pre script involved or the french lady is linguistically psychic.
@Nightlady0228
@Nightlady0228 2 года назад
It isn’t. I would have needed to interrupt her to repeat herself even if she had given me a script of her routine beforehand. Usually an average translator is able to retain about 40 seconds of spoken words without any note taking. This is very unrealistic BUT very well executed for comedic purposes

The translator should be the one with the mic
@rekkariley652
@rekkariley652 4 года назад
Standard etiquette with any sort of translator or interpreter is to basically pretend the translator/interpreter isn’t physically there, so the focus is still on the person they’re translating for. ASL is a good example of this: when someone is translating for an ASL-speaker, it is considered EXTREMELY rude to look at the translator instead of the ASL-speaker who is actually trying to speak to you.
@PoisonedTongue
@PoisonedTongue 4 года назад
Rekka Riley midge would still be the one on stage, just not the one with the mic, talking louder than the person the audience can understand
@rekkariley652
@rekkariley652 4 года назад
Almost Alice Doesn’t change my point at all: etiquette requires acting as though the interpreter is not really there, as if the person on stage is the one saying those words and not the translator.
@rekkariley652
@rekkariley652 4 года назад
Almost Alice “Even if an interpreter is present, continue speaking DIRECTLY to the deaf person.” disabilitynavigator.org/article/12329/tips-communicating-deaf-and-hard-hearing-people%20%20 This applies to interpreters in general, as well.
@gretchenortner
@gretchenortner 3 года назад
@@rekkariley652 I get that I'm 6 months too late, but this isn't disability related, just verbal language translation. I agree with the original commenter, that the translator should be the one with the mic. Midge could still look at the audience when speaking and could still be on stage, but the audience literally needs to be able to hear the translator, not Midge. Etiquette with deaf or hard of hearing and an ASL interpretor is totally different than etiquette with french vs english native speakers and an interpreter.

The Bare-bottom Bistro Sometimes a less than direct translation is better to achieve the same comedy
@davidwise1302
@davidwise1302 2 года назад
@@arielgonzalez1636 I've learned something since then, just a couple weeks ago actually. First, I misspelled it. I just called up Mrs. Maisel S2E1 (timemark 31:45) and it's spelled "Le Bistrot Les San-Culottes". My apologies for that. But the main thing is that while "culotte" now means underwear, in the time of the French Revolution, culottes were those silk knee-breeches that the aristocrats and rich wore while the poor wore pantalons, long-legged trousers like men wear now. The revolutionaries were known as "sans-culottes", so that is a patriotic term, something that a Frenchman would fully expect to see as the name of a bistrot, like Americans wouldn't be surprised to see an eatery/bar called "Yankee Doodle's". The only question is why the art director chose that particular name. It could have been to characterize that street as being in a working class neighborhood. It could very well be that they filmed on location and that's a real bistro. I still think that choice was intended as a double-entendre -- that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

this scene is amazing! But doesn't it bug you as well that the translater should have had the micro and not Midge? After all, the audience wouldn't have understood a word if not for the translater, so obviously it would have been more important that she was being heard.

Parce que pour éviter, comme font beaucoup de série qui utilise plusieurs langues dans des scènes (ici du français), de mettre du français et du français en même temps (là ou la VO tu as de l'anglais et du français comme dans ce cas) ils ont trouvé l'excuse de la clope qu'elle peut pas parler assez fort pour ca qu'elle fait appel à la dame

Of course,this is acting...and it's very well done. I fail to see how a translator can keep up with what Mrs Maisel is saying, as it's very noisy to hear both voices at once. Sorry, that fast bit is not credible in this setting.

@@pskarts20 (let me just start by saying i'm not an English native speaker so I apologise for any misspelled word) I don't think she's hilarious (but then I don't really like stand up that much) but the funny thing about this show isn't the stand up per se, but the things happening around that, her parents fighting, her dialoguing with her bff and the absolut contempt from her family to her career. And really a highlight to the series is Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce, a performance that won him and Emmy and really add to the show and the development of our main character. I understand if u don't like it, but Mrs Maisel is far from being the worst show you can watch on Amazon
