Trenitalia definitely has an advantage with this service as they know how to compete. In Italy, NTV's Italo service has been keeping Trenitalia on their toes. Before that, they were your typical incumbent monopoly operator. The Frecciarossa service was always good, but with the advent of Italo, Trenitalia has had to step it up. It's a good time to be a European train traveler.
@@Daniele_Zanardini I live in Italy myself (been here for 17 years) and I have experienced the improvements. It sure makes the trip from Turin to Milan a lot better.
In fact, I prefer Italo and only travel with Italo. The trains are much more elegant and the service is top notch. I hope Italo will also be on route to Europe like Trenitalia.
I'm Italian and always look for rhe Italo train first when I have to travel high speed. The trains are better, the prices are often lower and the service is altogether very good. Ever since its introduction it's been a blessing
I always use the Frecciarossa between Milan and Naples. It's exactly the same service. It's fast, comfortable and always on time. You can actually travel from Milan to Lecce (heal of the boot) on one single Frecciarossa journey. I recommend doing that...it's quite a journey!
you can also travel to the tip of the boot(reggio calabria) in one train from milan/ turin/venice and is also a bit faster beacause it travels on the high speed lines until naples(passing by bologna, florence and rome)
No plane needed, from city centre to city centre, no passport and luggage controls, no waiting lines, no cramped spaces, just enjoying the countryside and relaxing.
Not exactly true if you’re coming or going out of Ireland as you need to fly if you want to get to another city and I think it also applies in a way with travelling from Dublin
Yeah but still 7h is still worse than an hour flight, it would be different with a night train, you leave in the night and arrive early non the morning. I would prefer Trenitalia maintained Thello instead, made much more sense since it served all cities between Milan and Venice, instead of Milan only.
I live across the pond, so I'm not familiar with current availability - especially due to the "pandemic" - but aren't ferry services still available between Ireland and the British Isle?
@Niccolò Bonato yeah 7h is long but you are not counting the time off the plane. The time before and after the flight on the airport. And the time to travel from and to the airport cuz an airport doesn't lay in the city centre.
Bring the Frecciarossa to Germany, and show that Milan - Frankfurt - Copenhagen, Hamburg - Munich - Rome, Amsterdam - Munich - Venice, Berlin - Munich - Bologna via train, including meeting office and infrastucture, executive seating, and top-class services are much better than flying in a cramped airline seat, and waiting to board an aircraft. And it is much better for our climate! Keep growing the high-speed TEN infrastructure.
I mean if Germany started building on the Rhine corridor and the Munich-Austria corridor Italy and Germany would get much nearer. Meanwhile here in Italy nobody's even talking about building the Verona-Bolzano HS railway, but I hope that one day Munich will be only 3 hours away from where I live
@Giorgio Fegatini Except for the fact that 1)Frecciabianca don't travel at more than 200 kph 2) from Munich to Bologna there is no high speed lines and 3) probably the service included a lot of stops. Then again, already from the northernmost city of Southern Italy (Naples) to Munich there are 1000 km that even with the trains with the highest average speed in Europe would be covered in some 4 hours. Engineers, managers and planners already do not expect people to massively take a train for 3+ hours, imagine when it gets up to 4 in the best of cases.
@Giorgio Fegatini Missing piece is Brenner base tunnel. For ETR 1000 to run on DB OBB tracks it needs pzb lzb pantograph 1.95m metalized carbon under 15kv 16.7hz like the TGV. 1.45m copper Italy 3kv is safe on 15kv FFS 25kv SNCF but not DB OBB since it will not make contact with DB OBB 15kv wires
@@Hastdupech8509 the Brenner railway is currently upgraded with two new tracks on a new alignment that will allow for speeds up to 200-250km/h effectively quad tracking the route and this is being done alongside the construction of the Brenner base tunnel + the railway between Verona and bologna already allows for speeds up to 190-200km/h. If Germany and Austria get around to building fast route between Munich and Innsbruck then Munich-Bologna could be realistically done in 4h

These videos bring back some great memories of when I was a child and going to Sicily on a family holiday. In them days you could catch a train from Calais that would go right through to Palermo without changing. If you was unlucky you would have to change at Milan. The scenic routes through Switzerland were just simply stunning, and back then the 70`s most of the trains did not have sleepers. To get from London to Palermo took 3 days and 2 nights. Wonderful memories and wonderful trips.
@@Nicknock2504 Frecciarossa is not equivalent to Trenitalia: Frecciarossa is a limited, expensive service, that in many cases substitute the almost fast-as but less expensives IC, and it has never to do with the regional and interregional service that is usually not good at all.
A very minor correction: while the first production run of the Frecciarossa ran from 2013 to 2017, last year Trenitalia ordered two more production runs: 19 to cover future Italian and French operations and 23 to cover the 2022 entry on the Spanish high speed railways. Therefore, new Frecciarossa 1000 trains are currently being built again.
Once the Turin - Lyon high speed rail will be completed we will be able to travel between Milan and Paris in 4h. That for sure will make the train much more competitive.

I had the chance to travel in Executive on a Frecciarossa service before and I must say that in my opinion it's the best High speed rail service currently available in Europe.
True... If you think that the first Railway ever in the world was built in Naples, Italy, you can easily figure out how much Italy is cutting edge in this sector
The big level-up for the high-speed trains in Italy happened when the private competition came to the market with the Italo trains ; before that the HS trains were similar to the TGV. The most valuable thing of these trains it the quiteness during the trip, compared to the constant rumbling of the planes; that makes even a 7hr trip very relaxing. In italy it actually disrupted the Rome-Milan flight line, now the HS trains are much preferred on that route.
I have used the Florence Rome trip twice. And Florence Venice twice. Even to Bologna it outpaces the car already by half an hour. Sure the infrastructure is expensive but so is the highway alongside it. Italy got this right. Politically not much else though.

I’ve traveled many times in Executive Class between Milano and Firenze; Milano and Roma. It is simply THE BEST! There’s nothing else like it. Glad for this additional service/route so if the occasion arises I, without hesitation, will be onboard in Executive Class. Good luck SCNF … you’re going to need it! 😉
I could not agree more, i've traveled many times between Venice and Rome, comparing that with SCNF on the Paris - Avignon is night and day. I love Italy, I love that the people manage to function in a most dysfunctional way, but the trains, only the Japanese do it better, but even then, the Italians do it with more style.
The SNCF knows to optimise costs. Trenitalia trains won’t be competitive because the train capacity is 40% more important in a TGV than in Ferriorossa with less employees. SNCF is profitable with Ouigo trains with Paris Lyon at 15 €. Now Treinitalia enjoys a 30% discount for their fees using the hush. Speed lines during the first 3 years. Then they will have to fight SNCF with less cost and SNCF come back in 2024 with new trains with even more capacity
@@lvthud You don't know what you say. France is as well absolutely best when it comes to train. So many cities are on the way of a TGV, TER, RER in Paris... You compare what is not comparable. People don't choose SNCF to get the confort you see in this video, they take it for vacation when it's cheaper than the plane. Italy is not better, Italy is proposing an other offer that matches more the needs of business people going back anf forth between Paris and Lyon. So on this line yes, Italy wins. Sorry Dave.
@@lc5698 that's your opinion, mine is that the Italian high speed system is, more comfortable, more reliable, less prone to strikes and the food is far better.
totally agree, Frecciarossa Executive class is the best in Europe. We had the coach to ourselves on a short trip between Firenze & Venice, and it was hands down the best rail experience in all of our European travels. What Italy may lack in other areas, they utterly smash in Executive class Frecciarossa.
Having an incredible experience on this magnificent train so far. Atmosphere is very relaxing, seats are nice and comfy with lots of legroom, snacks are really tasty. Staff is really nice. Great opportunity to get some sleep as it is very quiet here in this section of the train. No complaints so far.

Thanks for this very detailed and informative video. I took the TGV from Paris to Turin in 2015, Frecciarossa to Milan and finally Frecciabianca to Venice. I travelled back the same way. I agree with everything you say about Frecciarossa. I only spent a total of 2 hours in standard (economy) class, but it knocked spots off anything we have in the UK. I shall definitely be giving FR a go the next time I visit Northern Italy!
I don’t think that would be implemented though. It sounds nice, but it would take 4 hours to Paris and then 3 more to London. That’s a bit of an overkill…
@@Namuchat The EU is mostly ruled by national parliaments. The power of EU lawmakers or bureaucrats was always exaggerated and the things Brits complained about were supported by British politicians (or were wholly their choice, like allowing workers from Poland several years before the rest of the EU did).

In Australia, in the 80s, a great deal of work was done to plan a high-speed line between Melbourne and Sydney via Canberra. Journey time was around three hours. Surveys were done on many aspects, including the environmental effects and on the consideration of Indigenous heritage sensitivities. All was looking good until the Hawke government refused a quite reasonable tax concession (despite its sunset clause) and the project was killed, stone dead. I still have the book outlining the project, with tables, illustrations, etc..
Yes there are, but first the Lyon Turin part of the high speed railway must be completed, it will approximately take round 6 hours to travel from Milan to Barcelona, while 4.5 hours from Milan to Paris
That looks like a really neat train trip. I love how you go through the Alps with all the snow. The food looks good and the train itself looks nice and clean. Only thing would make it better would be if it were longer lol
Great video Thibault, thank you. We travelled on the TGV Paris-Milan service a few years ago in first class and were rather disappointed. It didn't help that we also had to change trains unexpectedly in Chambery (it was a few days after an SNCF train crew industrial dispute and rolling stock was not where it was supposed to be - at least that was their explanation). It's fantastic to see the Frecciarossa going into true competition with the TGV service. I thought the rail fare was excellent value for money. We look forward to doing that journey again sometime in the future - and we'll definitely choose the Frecciarossa. Just hope by then they've removed that awful window wraparound as it definitely spoils what are excellent scenic views.

The fact that Europe is increasingly "banning" cars and investing in bicycles and public transport is great. Europe is building a renewable future. Big respect 👏👏👏
I'm sure that this beautiful train and excellent service was one of the reasons for the demise of Alitalia. Now that Trenitalia part own Avanti West Coast in the UK wouldn't it be nice to see a Frecciarossa speeding through the Channel tunnel and onto London. Great enjoyable video 🙂
@@giacintoboccia9386 Not entirely true, HS1 and access into St. Pancras has European clearance. The biggest problems remain the border checks and segregated area/platform mandated at every departure station to UK
Avanti West Coast is going away in 2026 due to the abolition of franchising of British rail. Also, it has NOTHING to do with the Chunnel, so it won’t be running in it. It’s operated by Getlink who is going to set up their own service between Stratford and CDG.
@@bcarp UK has a restricted loading gauge. Eurostar's Siemens trains are restricted to HS1. When Eurostar operated regional Alstom trains they were specially sized for UK loading gauge and one unit, being tested, ran between London and Glasgow via the ECML and Edinburgh.
Thank you for making this. I really enjoyed it. I never really thought of taking train from Paris to Milano, however it is a good idea! Next chance to visit Europe, I sure consider this plan. Lovely!
I would assume in the next year an E (for Spain) would joint those I and F in the ETR 1000 Frecciarossa. With the start for the service to Paris Trenitalia announced plans to put a Frecciarossa 1000 direct trip to Barcelona (no direct train between the two cities since the supression of the sleeper Trenhotel Salvador Dali). Two possibilities are being studied for the french part, one is via Grenoble and Valence (faster) and the other is going via the coastal line to Nice (this would cover the Thello service stopped from the first global lock-down). Also, Trenitalia subsidiary in Spain, Ilsa, has started trials and homologation for new Zefiros, classed as Serie 109 in Spain. They will start with services in Spain, plans are to reach France and Italy later. The commercial brand will be Iryo and the only doubt is how many levels of service will be offered, because the total number of seating is slighty different between the ETR 1000's and the new S-109's.

Breathtaking service, structure, accommodations, overall impeccable experience and reporting! True, the wrap on the windows is really bothersome! 🤩🙏🏻💫🥇✨
Thank you for a truly superb video ! I can't wait to take the Frecciarossa from Paris to Milan, for as you describe, it has to be the very best train service in Europe if you opt to travel "Executive" Class. I was amused to hear that the SNCF have now - at last - introduced a upgrade on the TGV service from Paris to Lyon. I rode on that service when the TGV Duplex were introduced, and to start with they did offer a dining option in 1st Class, but sadly that was soon withdrawn. As you so rightly say, "Competition helps the passenger" !
Omg you were on those trains? They got quite a resonance here in Italy. Anyway, I think Trenitalia will remove those cool stickers from the windows since they were all about celebrating European cohesion Italian-French cooperation and friendship and blablabla, but they'll be gone as soon as the hype goes down and this services become normal. Anyway, it's delizioso, delicioso is our Spanish friends' property🙃. Great trip and great report, unluckily it's a long ride, but with the Frejus base tunnel on the Turin-Lyon HS line travel times will get 2.30 hours shorter. From under Milan's duomo to Paris' Notre Dame in 4 hours, what a time to be alive, weren't it for NO-TAV in Susa Valley that have opposed the project for 20 years, though we're starting to see a renewed greater will to finish this project.

In the movie ‘the Tourist’ with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, she boards a italian HS train at Gare de Lyon to Venice. In that time it dis not yet exist, this possibilty. I have always wondered, but now it has really come true. Very nice!
Thank you so much. I absolutely loved this. What a superb, highly cost effective executive service, though I’m bound to comment that the window situation was pretty unacceptable for any of the best seats in this lovely train.
This train has fantastic acceleration (0.70 m/s2) like the Azuma in Uk (same acceleration rate) and the Etr-700 (0.58 m/s2). Hitachi sure know how to make quick traction motors. Thank you for your existence AC motors :D
Nice video. It's important to note the competition, which improves service overall. I love SNCF's TGV but would opt for the Frecciarossa between Paris and Milano.
This is a beautiful trip (also this is a route I really want to do sometime next summer), and I'm glad that Trenitalia is also an option. The only thing I really dislike about their beautiful high speed trains is the crazy amount of stickers everywhere, with a one-way system no-one follows and just so much junk (espacially on the windows). Anyways this was a great report, thank you for taking us along, and have fun in Milan (one of my favorite cities)!
Alitalia was the best airline company in term of plane and service and confort compare to other EU airline companies. Unfortunately bad managing sank it.
this must be one of the nicest train trips especially from Lyon to Torino. Crossing the Alps with snow is a nature gift. The scenery is fantastic. I did this journey in 2014 with the TGV. I wanna do it again but with cheaper price.
I m French and I prefer the Frecciarossa 👍 Itd a good competition as you said and Tgv has to quickly improve if not they ll lose a looot of clients, thats for sure ! The Executive is fantastic, I ll book it in the future
I am sure the Executive class is very comfortable, but regarding "lots of clients", you must take into account that not many people can afford to take Business or Executive class (unless it is a business trip and your boss pays for it :-). This is reflected by the fact that only 8 seats are in the Executive class coach. You just cannot build a train only consisting of Executive class seats and run it economically. But we will see how the market develops. In Spain, people are more used to comfort than in France, but the inexpensive services like OuiGo and Avlo have started running last year anyway, so there is a market for a range of different classes in high speed trains.
I take the frecciarossa every year from Florence to Rosarno (Calabria), and it's a 6 hour journey. If you're going solo the best experience comes surely from Executive but the best value I'd recommend is business. Also bc Executive tends to be the most empty and on a normal frecciarossa also kind of felt lonely to me
I rode this train from Rome to Florence in business class and it was so comfortable. The return trip at 2000 was virtually empty. Ride the train in Europe, it’s easy and cheap.
