Notre-Dame Cathedral
Notre-Dame Cathedral, referred to as Notre Dame de Paris (“Our Lady of Paris”) is one of the oldest and most well-known cathedrals in the world. Constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries it is renowned for its stunning French Gothic architecture. In April 2019, a catastrophic fire engulfed Notre-Dame, causing extensive damage to the building. The cathedral is still under restoration and reconstruction and is scheduled to reopen by December 2024.
Louvre Museum
The Louvre, one of the most recognizable and renowned art museums in the world, holds more than just an impressive collection of works. Its size, grandeur, and architectural influence have drawn the attention of visitors from near and far for centuries, making it an iconic landmark in history and architecture. The Louvre's noteworthy and unique design has created a lasting legacy in the field of architecture, spurring on a range of different design movements, ideas and theories.
The Louvre was originally a fortress built in the 12th-13th century, but was converted into a royal residence in 1546. It became a museum in 1793, and houses over 73,000 square meters of Western art from the Middle Ages te1818, as well as art from ancient civilizations. The louvre is home to some of the most famous works of Western art, including the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and Winged Victory.
Le Brun decorated the gallery’s vaulted ceiling with paintings of Apollo driving his chariot across the sky. Those along the central axis show the sun god’s journey, marking the different times of the day from Dawn to Night. These are surrounded by a whole cosmos of images and symbols of everything that is influenced by variations in the sun’s light and heat.
Since the Louvre’s transformation into a museum, the gallery has displayed the magnificent hardstone vessel collection of the kings of France. The royal collection also includes the Crown Jewels.
Mona Lisa
One of the more famous pieces of artwork hanging in the Louvre is the Italian Leonardo da Vinci's Renaissance-era painting "Mona Lisa" probably created between 1503 and 1506.
The painting is essentially a portrait, believed to be that of a wife of a Florentine cloth merchant ascording to the Louvre. The woman in the scene is shown from approximately her waist up, the first time such a pose had been used in such close-up, in such a way that she dominates much of the available space. Behind her is a fantastic landscape seen as if in the distance, through a window. The Mona Lisa was painted on poplar wood using traditional oil paints. Its size is quite small, measuring only 31 by 21 inches.
Arc de Triomphe
Erected on request of Napoleon, the Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. Besides the aesthetic reasons due to the beauty of the building and the panorama of the capital it offers, the Arc de Triomphe is also an important historical symbol, real link between the old and modern Paris. The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.
We got to witness a daily service which is paid to the Great Death. Every evening the flame is rekindled by the association which represents hundreds of veterans' in France.
