The tornado that hit Brooklyn, New York on September 16th, 2010. Shot with a Canon 7D from my bedroom window at 7th Avenue & 9th Street. The video begins at approximately 5:33 pm. en.wikipedia.o... www.onefjef.com
As opposed to the one where Fred is in his backyard videoing a twister with his Motorola Razor and with Mildred shouting at him to get in the basement.
@@rvarnum Lmaooo I definitely appreciated the silence. I understand that people get very excited and can't really control their loud babbling, though. But I do appreciate the quiet ones and the ones where they edit the audio.
Ok since everyone is now seeing this. I am a meteorologist. 1.) Windows shattered to either pressure drop for tornado or strong winds 2.) Seeing a funnel from close range in a very dense suburban area is hard, as it is obstructed and reshaped by buildings 3.) Most tornado warnings are from radar, so there may have been spinning in the atmosphere hinted at by a vorticity couplet, but no actual tornado 4.) I believe there wasn’t, look how little the truck moved. Likely a downburst, but still very cool!
Bruh y’all having second guesses if this a tornado or not. We never have tornados in New York, at least not that I know of. Also, yes to some of you it might look like a tornado because it’s spinning or whatever, but it’s just the rain with a lot of wind, we don’t really see it as a big problem because we know it’s gonna go in like 5 minutes and then it’s gonna be back to normal
Man, you ain't lyin'. I took a road trip to Mt. Rushmore from Minnesota 2 summers ago. [I'm aware I went to S. Dakota, but still.] That wind was crazy! 😳
@@CORPRAUST Yeah and this was pretty small for a tornado. It barely made it to EF 0 levels from the looks of it because the most it did was blast some windows open and throw trash. By the way EF 0 can be from 40 to 60 mph winds.
There's a subway entrance right there on the corner on the left of the screen. He was probably standing at the bottom of the stairwell during the height of this thing.
Creepy how it hits out of nowhere! Makes me wonder if there was even a chance to warn anyone b/c of the amount of people and traffic that were seemingly not in any more of a hurry than normal. That seemed to change rather quickly with the first good lightning strike/thunder clap, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh just a bit knowing I would most likely have the same reaction! Hearing the glass break and seeing the debris was amazing for the location; it seemed to vanish as fast as it started too.
Tornado my ass... I live in Oklahoma...come on down and we will show you what the hell a Tornado is. That was maybe a microburst with some straight winds for like a minute. LOL.
Major city life. Red lights usually just indicate a intersection. In Tulsa people have to slow down at Green lights due to others running the reds, it's worse where the cameras are in place.
That thunder clap beginning at 1:09 went BOOYAH!!!!! :) RIP Mr. Stuart Scott and thanks for the rightfully descriptive word to that unmistakable sound!
The irony is that I lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area for a few years and even though it's in the dead center of the Tornado Alley, have never seen a tornado before. Instead, I happened to live in Queens, NYC when this twister came along in 9/16/10. I still kind of remember this like yesterday!
+CarlsCustomCreations Statistically there are more tornadoes in Texas than other states simply because of its vast size, and it falls in the southern central areas of the Tornado Alley. However, rarely do tornadoes hit major cities or towns because most of Texas is pretty rural and sparse in population density. We did have plenty of supercell thunderstorms that produced hail and strong winds and tornado watch was in progress, but no tornado touched down. The last tornado we received in FT Worth was in March 2000, but that was before I was even there lol
wow, amazing video! I live in park slope and I left one of those twin window fans turned on that day when I left the house. When I came home after the storm, my room was plastered with little mud dots everywhere, and the motors of the fan were burnt. It was later that night that it was confirmed that was actually a tornado. Amazing that you caught it on video!
For anyone who says that this wasn't a tornado, here is the definition: A rotating column of air ranging in width from a few yards to more than a mile and whirling at destructively high speeds, usually accompanied by a funnel-shaped downward extension of a cumulonimbus cloud. This was a rotating column of air containing several vortexes whirling at destructively high speeds.
@@blankspott4467 www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/100916_prt_rpts.html Would you look at that! An EF0 and an EF1 CONFIRMED by NOAA on 9/16/10 in Brooklyn and in Queens, New York.
I was like, lol, look at the mannequin..then the Strom can and I was all like where'd it go!...then I saw it on the sidewalk...and was like I wonder if it will blow away..
For anyone who is dubious: this was a confirmed EF0 contained within a microburst (which is why most of the video just looks like a microburst). The vertical central rotation is visible beginning around 1:30. If you look at the crosswalk light, you should be able to see the tornado :)
Wow, amazing footage. You can really see the swirling winds in this -- I am glad you are okay. It's also such an NYC moment -- people still obeying traffic signals, and 1 jaywalker just trying to get underground!
WOW!! That was really something! I'm surprised the power stayed on. The traffic lights didn't miss a beat. It's a good thing you were safe inside. You did a great job of capturing the storm's fury.
Rain ouchen "The best video regarding storms and shit hands down" Uh no, perhaps spend ONE storm season here in Oklahoma. Better yet, go watch the real "best videos" El Reno, OK & Moore, OK (1999 & 2013) guaranteed better. You didn't even lose power ffs lol.
A city that never sleeps, what a down pour!!!!!! Born and raised in Fort Green, in the 60's, 70's, 80's, wading through rain, sleet and snow, faning during many steaming summers, W/O A.C!!! My dad use to say, if you can make it in NY, you can make it everywhere else!!!!!!! I've lived in the hurricane Capitol, FL, for the last 30 yrs, I've never had a desire to return!!! Nonetheless, NY will remain indelibly etched in my heart with fond memories of a vibrant, wonderful place!!!
A day I won’t forget. I was in nearby Greenwood cemetery putting flowers down at the family grave site when this storm came out of no where. Made it back to the car but I honestly thought I wouldn’t ever make it out of the cemetery alive; no exaggeration but for about 3 minutes it seemed as though the world was coming to an end ... even more scary than this video when you’re alone in a cemetery.
skadoocher123 you realize those are still dangerous conditions though, right? Going out in anything classified as a tornado doesn’t mean you’re tough lol it means you’re not bright
@@erasethepavement if you dont live where these happen regularly, please dont question like you know what you are talking about. In Kansas, for 6 months out of the year this is possible any minute of the day and can last for hours on end. This was nothing but a heavy down pour with some moderate wind. This video shows 5 minutes of what I literally today spent 7 hours dealing with straight. This is nothing. Possibility is not enough for people who live with these conditions our entire life. I am betting you are not even out of school yet. Dont let your ignorance set you up for failure. Its not toughness, it is experiance and knowledge that guide people out here. Where are you from? It would seem to me that you cant possibly be from anywhere that experiances actual weather.
That would be kinda scary if there was a blizzard in Texas. I think I once saw a show (a fictional one) where there was a blizzard in Texas in the middle of summer. If that happened, clearly we are screwed.
Scott Matthews, it's incredibly irritating when people only think of the Houston heat when it comes to Texas. Texas is huge and the climate is much more different in the panhandle.
Just because you don't see a funnel or a spout or whatever, doesn't mean it's not a tornado. You can clearly see some crazy whirlwind type stuff happening, it's probably a very weak tornado, an EF-O
@@HamburgerTime209 that sounds kinda stupid... Even if u see no evidence of a tornado it's still a tornado? Looks like ALOT of wind and rain that was totally not a tornado
@@alanvicker1227 Wind, rain, and lightning are typically accompanied by tornadoes, lmao. The issue you clearly have is the fact that this was shot in Brooklyn, NY. Contrary to your beliefs, the introduction of both hot and cold air can cause convection cells, regardless of location. It's just more common in the mid-west because the cold air from Canada, and warm air from Mexico.
I don’t see how people in the comments say “that’s not a tornado!”. It was definitely a swirl of wind! And created damage! Tornadoes can briefly spin-up on storm fronts.
That's not a technical tornado though. A tornado is formed through a supercell. A mezocyclone etc Waterspouts, dirtdevils and swirls of wind technically aren't cyclones lol
I'm guessing all of the people who live in tornado alley knows all about tornadoes right? Coming from Oklahoma, but this dude uploaded it because he saw a weather channel say it was a tornado. Just enjoy the video.😥
I see the poster took down an earlier comment of mine. I did a detailed analysis of this video using Google Earth as well as the surveyed path of this confirmed EF0 tornado. I was able to confirm the location stated in the video description then compare it with the survey and determine that the tornado did not directly impact this intersection, it was several blocks away. This video probably shows the RFD and other downdraft winds directly adjacent to the tornado.
No one believed me that day. I live in Lincoln Place. This storm caught my sons and I. We had garage cans hitting us. Rock size hail. The gutter filled so quickly with water. I had to hold a wrought iron fence and put my sons between my arms. I had to scream just for them to hear me. We made it into the vestibule and we all cried. My sons face looked like hit was hit. Crazy experience.
Lol tornado? Ok you guys make fun of us in Alabama when 3" of snow shuts us down. Now it's my turn. That's a typical thunderstorm you had there. I wouldn't even be willing to say it was sever.
@@blankspott4467 You're wrong, stop bullshitting and look at the actual NOAA reports. www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/100916_prt_rpts.html Both are CONFIRMED tornadoes.
Christopher Bateman and your proud be cause y’all get more tornadoes lmaooooo then you guys cry for fucking help when the town gets destroyed I’m glad nyc don’t have tornadoes I live in ny work in New Mexico/Texas
There’s no cities in Texas, you dumb fuck? Everyone here already knows it’s not a real tornado. I’ve been small towns in Texas and I’ve been to big cities like New York and grew up in Chicago. Everywhere has its beauty.
I remember coming out of the subway after work and thinking should I go down Flatbush and get food. I didn't have my umbrella...in retrospect that would have been useless, but said no, I'd better get home. As soon as I got in front of my door the doorman and other said a Tornado was coming. Just then the wind went crazy and the rain went sideways. I could not see in front of my face. It was crazy. The sound of the wind going up the elevator shaft told me not to go near it. I gladly ran up three flights of stairs. hahahaha
Definatly a Microburst, I was in brooklyn on a bike ride when that storm came out of nowhere. The sky turned dark green, the wind went from 0 to crazy, we had to ditch our bikes and hide under parked cars. It only lasted a minute, but its was scary.
On the camera doesn't look that bad. I remember this day, it was raining so bad it was pitch white. You could not see anything. I was surprised the news did not rule it as a tornado. I was actually at work on the lower east side of Manhattan that day. Scary shit everyone just froze and waited till it stop.
i remember this storm like it yesterday.....i was soak to death i had no idea it was a tornado until saw the news ...i was on 8 avenue ...i know something was wrong because i saw debri ....im shit this aint no normal thunderstorm...thank goodness it was just strong wind a light tornado!
***** SHIIIIIIIIT i was in that tornado too.......i check it out you post....damn i should of know because when the sky was black i saw greenage..i should pick it up and i didnt
