This is a review of the Parker 99R double edge safety razor. I found the 99r to be a great razor at a great price. In the past I've seen mixed reviews about Parker safety razors, but they've really stepped it up in the last few years and are consistently producing quality shaving gear. This solid brass razor has a nice bright chrome finish. It's on the heavier side at 3.4 oz. and it's about 4.5 inches long. It shaves on the milder side, but it's not overly mild. It gave a great shave with no irritation. I would not hesitate to recommend this mild mannered shaver to someone looking for their first DE razor.
The Parker 99R is available at TRINITYSHAVING.COM

For this review I also used Proraso Green Tea & Oat shaving soap(AKA Proraso White). Also available at TRINITYSHAVING.COM

You do get your very best shave with a double edge razor. I also like the injector razor to however it's hard now to find injector razor blades, those to were the very best razors. Wish they still made them and the injector razor blade replacements. They definitely were the very best.

Thanks for the review it will help a lot!Have a new Parker 99R on the way from Amazon and also some Astra platinum blades to try also.I have been using a Braun electric and love it but am willing to try the Parker as the blades are so cheap compared to the disposable razors that are just to expensive.I love my Braun electric as it cuts as close as a blade but cant wait to get the Parker and try it.Thanks Again!

just started using the safety for a week now after 30yrs. tried the 99r tonite with a featherlite and it was aggressive. I don't cut easy but this scythed any pimple leaving me with quite a few blood spots like id never shaved. my skin feels sore but am pleased with the results. I started with the 7 doller plastic Wilkinson safety last week and the r99 is a far closer shave

Nice review. I have this razor also and really like it and you really can't beat the price. I recently bought a razorock TTO, and well, let's just say I have to be more careful with it lol.

Great review. What do yu think of the shark blades that come with the razor?

I just cannot use Parker razors inn general. I had a 99r, but gave it back. It was so aggressive. I TRIED THE 96R. I kept it but it is also too aggressive for me to shave with. I tried the 86r, it was so mild that it didn't shave well at all. Alas, the 90r is a good razor and I really like it. I am in the razor business and off shore manufacture stuff in China, Pakistan, and India. Parker makes 4 different TTO heads and 2 different close comb heads that I know of. Nice review though. I am going to hit the subscribe button as soon as type the next period.

Just ordered a Merkur 38C. Some people hate the Butterfly Opening DE's. My Dad had both Gillette Butterfly and 2 Piece Screw In Models when I was a kid. Both seemed very durable at the time (a very young kid handling them, I always liked mechanical things). Ordered a complete kit and I am about to begin Old Time DE Shaving. I hope I do not cut myself up. My skin has aged and toughened up over time (lots of sun and shaving over the years). Used to, you could say razor around me and I would start bleeding on command.

What's the difference ? They all look like handles . They all look the same . I would think the blade itself would you have a good close shave or not . Looking forward to your reply . I wanna get one I just don't know enough .

Mine keeps unlocking during the shaves. Wish it had a little lock on the bottom handle like the old Gillettes

just got mine in the mail today, the doors do not open fully like yours did at 1:07. It gets stuck half way. Is my new razor defective? OR is there a simple fix I can do to get it to open all the way?
@beejayshaving197
@beejayshaving197 9 лет назад
The internal mechanism could be a little tight. Try to twist it with a little more pressure and that should loosen it up. If that doesn't do it, contact the vendor that sold it to you about a replacement.

Thanks! yes I've tried to twist the bottom with all my strength, it will not open all the way. I will contact them today and most likely need a replacement

question: I just started using this razor, and i noticed when loading a blade I have to center it really carefully. If you just put the blade in and close the razor, very rarely will you have even exposure on both sides. Is this common with flare tip razors like this? Or is mine just a piece of crap! Thanks... Also how do you take this thing apart to keep water out of the inside of the shaft?
@beejayshaving197
@beejayshaving197 8 лет назад
It's common to have a little bit of play in safety razors. I find with the Parkers it's not enough to affect the way it shaves. There's also no need to disassemble for cleaning. These are chrome plated brass so it won't hurt it when water gets inside.
@glytch5
@glytch5 8 лет назад
cool thanks, really it doens't hurt your shave? Mine must have alot more play than yours, one side barely takes hair and the other is super aggressive unless I perfectly center it. Are 2 or 3 piece merkurs any better with this? Thanks for the info!
@beejayshaving197
@beejayshaving197 8 лет назад
+Max Savino the Merkurs have more play then the Parkers. I always center the blade when I use those.
@KeyCarist

@Crixus, this was my first DE razor purchased about 2-3 years ago. I never messed with manually "centering" the blade but noticed the same issue you are having. Being new to DE's I just thought all were made with an aggressive side and a gentle side. I can shave well on the side with little exposure but get bad razor burn on the side with heavy exposure. The trick for me is getting the right angle on the gentle side. That said I just bought a cheap $15.00 drug store Van Der Haagen razor and had much better results. After using the $15.00 dollar razor I also noticed I don't care for the balance of the 99R- it seems handle heavy which causes the head to "skip" across my face when I use little pressure and let the weight of the blade do the work. Not sure if you had the same experience?
@glytch5
@glytch5 8 лет назад
I figured something interesting out recently while messing with it, I noticed that after trying to center the blade, even though it looks off center, it actually is not. It is made in india and not very precisely. The sides are not equal to each other. So it in fact feels less even when I make it appear even. I don't seem to have head skipping issues no I have not noticed that. I also have a merkur 37C, absolutely love that razor, I think I like aggressive heads

Perspective is a funny thing I guess. I just transitioned to the 99R from a Parker 65R which IMHO is a much more aggressive razor that will punish me if I don't work very carefully with it. By comparison, with the 99R I shave in a much more relaxed way with less worry.

Hey thanks for the review! You've mentioned that it is made in India. But which country is its headquarters located? I have trouble finding this info and it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

When you say it's "brass", you mean the handle only correct? From what I have gathered in my research is that only the handles are brass and the head is usually some chrome plated zinc alloy.
@beejayshaving197
@beejayshaving197 8 лет назад
Most of the modern 3 piece razor heads are cast with zinc based pot metals. However those metals aren't strong enough for the intricate parts of a turn to open mechanism. Most TTO's, including the Parkers, are made of stamped brass.

BeeJay Shaving Thanks BJ. I like the idea of a butterfly, I just worry about the whole moving parts wear out issue.
@CobraKaiNoMercy

Brass is a zinc alloy (copper and zinc) if I am not mistaken ☺.
@HerdingDogRescuer
@HerdingDogRescuer 8 лет назад
TeHGoodReverend You are correct. I should clarify that is would be another type of zinc alloy besides brass.

Thanks. Sharks are actually my least favorite blade. Not to say that they are bad, because there are plenty of people that love them. I have tried them in four or five different razors and I have yet to get a comfortable shave with one.

Have you tried the Dorco ST300(blue box), Merkur Platinum or Derby blades? The Dorcos did nothing but cut my face 🙅.

The 99R is actually nickel-plated brass, not chrome.

I kept cutting myself when I bought this razor. I then bought the Mekur 34c razor and found it much better
@beejayshaving197
@beejayshaving197 9 лет назад
The 99R is a pretty mild safety razor. If you're getting cuts it most likely has to do with your technique. It may also help to try it with a few different blades. If the Merkur is working better for you stick with it for now, but hang on to the parker and try it again in a few months. It may suprise you.

+blue28119 Same here. I really wanted to like the Parker 99R but it cut me to shreds. My Edwin Jagger doesn't do that. Tried different razors with it. Maybe I got a defective one?

Thanks for that its a good looking razor but i felt maybe the blade moved around in the razor hence the cuts id only had it weeks its still like new. So bought the mekur and its great no nicks or cuts with it blade stays solid in the razor. I have feathers persona derby blades ect but yes i will try it again thanks for that
@beejayshaving197
@beejayshaving197 9 лет назад
blue28119 Try to get the razor to close nice and snug on the blade. If it wont hold the blade securely there may be something wrong with the one that you received. If there is a defect, contact the vendor that you purchased it from and ask for a replacement.

I just got mine and used it for the first time. I have been using Gillette Mach 3 for years, but stopped after their recent anti-male ad campaign. This razor is very aggressive by comparison. It cuts much closer, and my face feels raw. I will adjust my method. Astra has real cheap razors for this. The Parker looks nice and sturdy and functions well.
