Steve Kroft talks to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of Comedy Central's "South Park." Now the disrespectful duo also have the biggest hit on Broadway, the musical comedy "The Book Of Mormon."
South Park was on CC’s first shoes tho, he clearly said when CC was first starting up as a small group they paid South Park to make a mini series that turned in to the greatest animated comedy ever.
"What if Tom Cruise is *literally* in a closet?" I love that the legal team may have accidentally made that joke way funnier than it would have been otherwise.
maturity is subjective, the show is very immature in the traditional sense of the word. But seeing that you wrote this comment 7 years ago i'm guessing you would agree.
Breaking down the dogmatic nature of religion-Mormon play. Now politics have become the new age of dogmatic religion.....At least we have South Park to fall back on.
Well... cartman jerking off a dog is pretty immature humor. There's some gross out humor/obscene remarks in the show that are just unfunny, but for the most part it's genius.
Totally, if someone ever asks me about an example of soulmates I would say Trey Parker and Matt Stone relation ships sums perfectly what a soulmate means to be.
honestly the guy narrating annoys me...like bro sometimes they are fictional boys and are little jerks..its not that serious or dramatic as he makes it sound smdh...
hahhahah me too!!! lol their voices, writing etc is sooo good! Always! the key is they write for themselves. market research, second guessing, too much time, trying to please everyone ruins comedy.
Even when I'm not in the mood, I'm never disappointed by a Southpark episode I haven't seen yet because there's always something unbelievably weird in it.
@The Dawg I was quoting it because I Love the fact that he said it man. I Love Matt Stone and Trey Parker. And South Park is one of the few shows of it's kind that I am genuinely emotionally attached to.
@Fish Boy I wouldn't even say that writers don't understand, but if a child is in a TV show, it's usually one meant for kids to watch so they can have the kids cursing usually.
I saw the show live in Baltimore, and it was absolutely fantastic! I find it odd how many people say "Who would've guessed that the best show on Broadway would be the one created by the South Park duo?" ANYBODY familiar with Trey and Matt's work immediately knew it was going to be great.
Cody dude I saw it in Baltimore two years ago too! It was awesome. I've seen 6 plays before and it was by far the best. I went in and there were a bunch of older people and thought I was gonna see alot of people walk out. At the end there were grandma's cheering and clapping it was awesome to see
To be fair I'm familiar with their work but nothing about Broadway plays so I have no clue what a 'modern normal' play would look like? I have heard of Urinetown though.
I'm not a Broadway kind of person but as soon as I had the opportunity to see the play in London I took it in a heartbeat. Had a fantastic time and was laughing throughout. I only went to see it because I knew Matt and Trey wrote it and I wasn't disappointed. Only the best from my favorite comedy duo
***** Trey said something in another interview about how his mum will often show up and see him exhausted, pale, shaking, red eyes etc. We should all be thankful they keep entertaining us.
***** I agree, they are comedic geniuses & I'm grateful for what they do. Looking forward to future seasons, I'm not even sure when the next season of South Park is.
I went to film school with these two guys. One thing I will always remember is there was some end of school year awards program...Trey, of course, won some big award for something...and he stood up from his chair in the crowd and gave this very sincere speech to his parents thanking them. I would never have had the maturity and vulnerability to do that in college, it kind of shocked me at the time.
You can tell he’s genuinely interested in talking to/learning about the duo. It’s nice to see a journalist who isn’t so PC that he can appreciate the satirical absurdity/value of South Park
@@bellmeisterful They actually reference it in the south park episode about The Passion. Something about Stan and Kenny getting their movie ticket money back after watching Baseketball.
You can tell Steve Kroft really enjoyed being around these guys. When Parker was talking about All in the Family, Kroft couldn't even keep the smile off his face.
There probably the most creative to actors/artists/comedians i have ever known or will ever know.. Incredible the influence South Park has had on the world.
It's funny seeing Seth has some things in common with Trey and Matt since they found inspiration for "All In The Family/Archie Bucker" for their shows.
"We couldn't have a show about Archie Buner in the early 90s because things back then were too PC." Oh, you sweet, simple summer children, if only you could look into the future 30 years later...
VictheBrick Gaming dude when my friend and I found that I was probably 8th grade maybe one lower but it had us dying laughing especially knowing they created South Park
cr0nosphere Speaking of Adventure Time, (I used to watch it) the voice actor of the lemon guy is Justin Roiland, who is one of the creatures of Rick and Morty :D
What these two have done is incredible. The fact that they inked one of the most lucrative deals in entertainment history showed how forward thinking they were. They signed a deal where they get 50% of any digital revenue generated from the show. Viacom didn’t even flinch on it lol but they wanted it. Fast forward to mid ‘10s and Viacom begged them to readjust but of course they didn’t budge but they did move on merchandise which Viacom get like 90% of lol cool. They’ve inked like $1.75B in streaming figures in the last 5 years not including what they get from online revenue. It’s just crazy. Not including Book of Mormon sales either. They’ve been a staple of my life since I was a kid in 97 and I love they’re not stopping yet
Been watching South Park since i was 4 and always loved it because the boys reminded me so much of how me and my friends were as kids. The only show i watched which did actually show how kids talk between each other.
Honestly the pillar of mainstream comedy, if it weren't for these two geniuses i wouldn't have grown up with the humor i cherish today. Every moment in the later episodes of South Park has deeper meaning that most of us can understand. Like Stan, Kyle, Cartman & Kenny has has their own moral standpoint that overall comes with a conclusion at the end of the show, mostly Kyle being the rational and Stan being the one come to a conclusion and Cartman that is manipulative. Thanks Trey Parker & Matt Stone!
My favorite line from the South Park movie was when Chef asked the General "Haven't you ever heard of the Emancipation Proclamation?" And without a pause the general says: "I don't listen to Hip-Hop."
They didn’t mention Matt and Trey Went to the Oscars wearing dresses and tripping on LSD!! I absolutely love South Park! I have every single episode..even the few that where not aired.
When you're sitting back and reminiscing fondly over this great documentary, remember to thank Lipitor. Without their sponsorship, this wouldn't exist.
this is amazing. & the proshot of book of mormon is awesome, i've listened to the soundtrack hundreds of times but can't afford to go see the show, so happy there's actual footage out there of it, other than the tony performance.
They're not actually Republicans though lol. Just every now and then they publicly say they're Republican just to confuse people and watch people's face melt. It's something they do every few years.
As a Nordic, I won't stick my nose to American politics, but the collective soap box-behavior is kind of hilarious. Whether democrat or republican, you are 100% and shout it. Same goes to other things "I am a gun owner!", "I am a vegan!" and so on. What they are actually saying is that "I am a hero!" People define themselves by most arbitrary things, shout it out loud and wear T-shirts and hats and bumper stickers etc. with a text that what kind of superhero they are. And it's kind of confusing when someone says "I support our troops". Like... how exactly? With tax dollars?
Rex lol support our troops was propaganda for funding of the multiple wars we don't understand or care to be in. A majority of Americans are pacifist but will do the hard thing if they feel it's what's right to do. We're being manipulated to be pro war
Its not all about talent. It says a lot about their personalities and their work ethic that they are still going strong after 25 years. You have to have the right personality to get along with the same core group of people for that long in that setting. Ego and often money get in the way. I can't think of too many professional partnerships that have been as successful as them for this long
I love both of them so much... It’s hard to convey what kind of impact they’ve had. The countless hours of laughter aside, I firmly believe they helped mold my views for the better. They consistently tackle the topic of the time period and always have a thought provoking take on it. Regardless of your position, if you objectively watched South Park from beginning to end. You’d agree you were better off doing so. I hope they can accept the congressional Medal of Honor on acid one day, they deserve it. Spaghetti monster bless them❤️
My best friend and I are both comedy writers who are working on a few pilots together and we both really look up to these guys. Trey and Matt are two real-life best friends who have created their own show which has been on for over two decades, that’s basically the best case scenario for my writing partner and I. We’re both pretty young and have only been at it for a couple of years so who knows where we’ll end up, but we’re hoping that we can end up anywhere close to where Trey Parker and Matt Stone are in their careers.
The first time I watch South Park, I was aged 8, in 1998, around my friend's house. The phone kept ringing, I generally thought it was my mum knowing we were watching South Park. I crumbled told her... then found out my Mum already watches it with her boyfriend haha
