Tools needed:
T20 torx bit
Ratchet
flat head screw driver or small plastic interior trim pry bar
(preferably) a swivel-head and ratcheting 10mm wrench
(possibly) locking pliers if the screws get stuck and endlessly spin in one of the metal insert tabs
This is a DIY "how-to" on adjusting parking brake cable length for the 5th generation VW Golf/GTI.

What a performance to adjust the handbrake, typical ******* German built car, not assembled in Germany but thrown together. It really does make you wonder if they sat down and tried to design something that is as difficult to work on as possible. I've been in the motor trade 40 years and German cars are all the same.

The duct was in the way for me to get the last screw on pass side by the seat. I happened to have a 12 inch long 1/2 drill and just made holes above that screw, then duct taped them closed when finished. Made it much easier to get that last screw, but I had the bit and tape is fine in a vent.

Hey man thanks a lot for this video helped me a lot. However, i found a solution to not accessing that last screw under the HVAC duct. if you pull up on the duct it will actually move out of the way allowing you to access the screw

hey i came across this video because i am looking for a hand brake housing replacement (the things that slides up and down with the lever) . I am afraid ill drop stuff down there. anyway, i see you have the same type of hand brake housing and wondering if you know where i can get replacement or a way to fix it/workaround great video btw - thx!

Junkyards are always your best bet for replacement parts like that, but you can also try dealership too. Car-part.com might also be worth a shot. I don’t know if they get that specific tho. It’s like an online junkyard inventory search

You shoudn't adjust parking brake on this nut if you have too many clicks. This is used only when you change rear calipers, so you set the handbrake lever on calipers to 1-1.5mm from the lever stop. VW uses screw type auto adjust handbrake, so if for some reason you have too many clicks over time as brake pads worn out, that means that your auto adjusting mechanism isn't working.

On my 2008 Jetta the ebreak cables are new and the passenger side cable is pulling more than the driver side one so it’s uneven. So it isn’t working properly. Any tips on how to fix it?
@garagebay1861
@garagebay1861 2 года назад
There are 2 cables that run up to the one that I show is being adjusted in the video. You may be able to adjust length back at the calipers. Otherwise there may be an adjustment but underneath the car closer to directly underneath where I was showing to adjust the main nut. Haven’t messed with individual e-brake cable tension before.

How did you tighten down the nut at the end of the video? I can’t get a wrench in there
@deathisnotcool3412
@deathisnotcool3412 5 лет назад
I figured it out, I had to break the bracket that held in the screw that wont come out, the use a size 10 wrench
@garagebay1861
@garagebay1861 5 лет назад
Deathisnotcool :3 yeah I used a 10mm swiveling, ratcheting wrench to get in there.

If you have excessive handbrake travel you need to make adjustments at the wheels before you touch the cable adjustment.
