Without doubt the most underated British talent, everyone talks about Bowie, Elton John, lennon and McCartney etc etc, but Ian Dury is up there with them
He was an absolute genius. 💯 pure gold. Very smart man & so clever with his amazingly Cockney rhyming slang. I still miss him dearly but still always play his music. Yes indeed he was up there with the greats. ❤
Casey Jones . I was surprised how old he actually was . Seven in 1948. He would be 71 next year, making him an authentic rocker and not a punk at all .
A lovely poet. A real good bloke and I totally believe his horror story about being at a grammar school in the 70's. A few of my teachers were just violent thugs.
I also was at that Hammersmith odeon gig do it yourself tour 1979.l when with my brother phill and his mate Ian. Very good gig and a great night out nice one
Spent many school days singing to New Boots & Panties album.I still play Ian's songs now. What a top man.He just wrote fantastic songs about real life.....A supreme Talent
Ian, I know you see this from beyond; so proud of your strength through your challenges. I sure love your music. I share with those that feel sorry for themselves for they need to hear your story. My daddy died in 1947 of polio, he was in an iron lung. So hearing you survived this journey is very touching to my soul. RIP I am a new Fan. They treated children so cruelly that were not what the public opinion was set at as Normal. What the shiiiite is normal anyway? Your music is magnificent.:-)
I remember seeing Ian and the blockheads at the lyceum in London. He fell over and a roadie picked him up. He just laughed if off and turned it into a rhym. Great man , great band, great memories.
i honestly didnt see the disability cos i was watching the bass player on rythm stick ... ian had a cane but adam ant had face paint ...who can tell honestly though i really never knew till later on and by that time i had found rush yes genesis and zappa so i couldnt see straight for a decade
Ian Dury very much under appreciated here in the States. I've loved him from the late 70s. What a character, and the world is a colder place without 'im.
1948 was it ARF ... Brilliant 😂😂 .. Ian dury pure genius .. Loved his music brilliant entertainer .. Feel honoured I got to see Ian and his blockheads perform at Hammersmith .. Sadly missed 🙏
I clicked this because I have Parkinsons and I love Ian Dury... then I found out the interviewer is called Parkinson and Dury has Polio. Mind blown. I always assumed he was just messed up from drugs or something when I saw his clips, pretty bad assumption.
bdbdbd; yes, I understand what you are saying . I saw him in the Wellington (NZ) town hall somewhere around 1980 , and at the time of show I had no idea he had the polio .I was like you, and I just thought he was a fuelled up beast . One of the best concert too, and I've been to some .
I didn't know him, friend of mine played his music and I fell in love with him and Blockheads, just can't believe how amazing and smart their songs were, i regret i found out so late, he is a legend for me :)
I had the pleasure of getting on it with Ian after his Wellington New Zealand Concert. Early eighties and man what a GREAT concert, huge brass section and they blew us away with their sounds. RIP sir. He had tobacco mixed with his and we Kiwis cannot cop it that way,we have it straight pot naturally but Ian warmed to it and liked our Maori Wowie
Every one with a physical problem should see this, he is humour and grace...and a wee bit of the naughtiness. I am a Canuck and I loved his stuff and him. Hit me Ian!!!!
Thanx Ian dury a legend and a brilliant lad that in spite of his obvious physical probs he did something a hell of a lot just couldn't have done ! He was loved 4 being himself and achieved everything he's a miss but won't be 4got how can we ,his band cheers me up still his unique presence made the blockheads a stand out band ✌️👏👍😎❤️
Marvellously talented individual despite his physical struggles. I never appreciated him when he first appeared on Top.of the pops but came to appreciate him soon after. Greatly respect him now even more since my disability. RIP Ian Dury.
1948 was it Arfur?? Scargill on the spot! Ian's lyrical, musical, humourous songs will eventually be recognised for the true genius it was! The perfect platform for his talent were the unbelievable Blockheads!
im australian and i love how cockney ppl are so down to earth loved ian dury had the cassette jukebox jury in 82 used to flog it to death rip ian musical poetic cockney genius xox 😊❤💐🥀
Apart from the obvious disadvantage of Polio, he had quite a decent upbringing and a middle class background. He played up the "cheeky Cockney wideboy" image brilliantly. Of course , that will be taken as criticism and a lack of sympathy. I loved the bloke to bits actually.
I went to a special school, I had friends BUT I never really liked it as I felt I was put in a box, and came out with nothing NO exams nothing pointless in that way. At 35 years old I feel like I'm learning now that's y I like reading 📚. I think that's y society treats us disabled people the way they do and judge us coz we're all put in box's growing up
I love that even here you get snippets of his deliberately playful use of language and wordy sense of humour. Just because he’s working class, doesn’t mean he’s not one of the most interesting, erudite, articulate men you’re likely to hear.
Lots of people assume that working class means unintelligent when nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the most stupid people i've met have been to university. Education does not guarantee intelligence.
no it's because Parkinson is a talentless dolt. he did't even say hello or ask him how he was and just over a minute in he was asking Ian how his polio effected him psychologically. it's so fucking rude.
as shallow as TV can be Parkinson has always pioneered his very own sort of mindless insensitive sycophantic bull in a sweet and gentle china shop. it's alwys been about look at me with this special person. he didn't even say hello to Ian before asking him about his experience of polio and makes Dury look so uncomfortable. just like his dead brained interview with David Bowie when Bowie must've been in his 50s. he asked Bowie trash for questions
Ian Dury, lived his music since ”New boots and panties” also had the fortune to know Norman Watt-Roy after they did a gig with Wilko in north if sweden -87, remarkable bassist!
