This 4 minute video focuses on speech exercises that target the BACK of the tongue. The back of the tongue is important in swallow function and can become weak in individuals with Parkinson's disease, stroke and other neurological conditions.
There are three sounds in English that are made using the back of the tongue: /k/ as in "kitten", /g/ as in "go" and /ng/ like at the end of the word "eating".
When completing these exercise be sure to say them like speech therapist Sarah in the video.. with lots of focus and effort. Try to make every sound as crisp and clear as possible. This is a great exercise to tack on to the end of a 20 minute voice and speech practice session.
These speech exercises are based on the work of speech pathologist Daniel R. Boone.
