Hold up... If all the students are taught self defense, doesn't that just give the shooter another advantage? Because they've been taught self defense as well.
We can't teach kids to read on grade levels. We can't afford new books. We can't train and retain good teachers. We can't pay new teachers a decent salary. Where is all this new money and training coming from. I'm a school counselor. My job in my school district requires that if there is an intruder with a gun, I hunt for kids who may be in the halls and get them to safety. You can't afford to send my kids on field trips, but you plan to arm me with a gun then train me to shoot. Bad idea.
I have to say, has anyone who has ever said that ever used a gun? You don't want a gunfight to begin with, real gunfights are nasty and you often miss a lot.
Yes because one trained kid with a firearm surprising other kids is a much better situation. Its not like he/she is now trained to effectively shoot and kill people yeah. Your logic is sound and infallible. Good work, heres a cookie....Seriously wtf.
Think of it this way folks. These kids will be our next generation. Kids that have grown up with school shootings happening around them at a far too consistent rate. If stronger gun laws won't come now, they will come later. The old must eventually make way for the new.
You know, when the adults who are expected to be the role models in situations like these don’t do jack shit, and it’s the KIDS who have to take matters into their own hands, there MIGHT just be a _teeny_ problem with the state of things in this country.
Heracross X It gets even worse when you see adults accuse the kids of being in league with leftist organizations designed to take away everyone’s guns. I wish I was kidding, but I’m not
bmotx Do you have nothing better to do than to make obnoxious attempts to troll people? Because if so, I’ll be sure to send you some of those “thoughts and prayers” that those cowardly GOPers are so fond of.
Martin Bustamante you can’t defend yourself with a handgun? Semi automatic guns which are still legal were specifically designed to kill many people at once.
dzgfdg education is a state issue, so if you have poor school systems its your states fault. Here in ND we spend a quarter million per day in our largest city of fargo on schools. So you cant really relate those two things
I just think it’s funny that now we’ve had to had kids be homeschooled for real now so there hasn’t been any school shootings in the last couple months😂😂 problem solved I guess (not meant to be political just rewatching and realizing how that joke actually became true)
ScarlettP shilling platitudes for the democrats with jon oliver, colbert, and samantha b is nice, but if he wants to push for progressive policies that could unite the country and solve the problems, only then they can be as good as Stuart.
Vanessa H. Aside from the fact that Jon Stuart was the host before him and it's what made the daily show big, it's the job of comedians to punch up. Punching across and inflaming left right divides is not helpful.
This is my school and we survived this.Trevor I LOVE YOU. i go to this school i survived this shooting and i want you to know YOU are preaching WE ARE ON UR SIDE this is MY school and WE WILL NOT STOP FIGHTING!! Emma, David, Cameron, Alfonso if you guys are reading this. Im proud of you guys I love the work you’re doing. im Proud to say Ive been ur friend.
ramis hashmi I am so proud of all of you and I am so sorry for your losses. Thank you for renewing my faith in this country and our chances for a better world. With kids like you in it, we have a fighting chance. Thank you so much. ✌💕
I don't know why I believe this to be true. Probably, because I'm the same way. And knowing that, Trevor, can be very dangerous. Reading his Bio, yea, O.K., close to mine.
Self defense classes for children... yeah. I'm a martial artist and if there's a guy across the room with an AR-15, there is no judo technique that I know of that lets me dodge bullets. Like, who do they want to train these kids? Neo from the Matrix?
You need to watch more UFC.. If a kid can get a gunmen to put his weapon down for just 2 minutes, a kid would be able to Superman punch him Chuck Lidell style and save the universe from terrorism
Call me crazy but going to school where teachers and administrators have guns to fire back against a nactive shooter sounds like walking into a war zone instead of a place of learning
To get a gun in Japan, first, you have to attend an all-day class and pass a written test, which are held only once per month. You also must take and pass a shooting range class. Then, head over to a hospital for a mental test and drug test (Japan is unusual in that potential gun owners must affirmatively prove their mental fitness), which you'll file with the police. Finally, pass a rigorous background check for any criminal record or association with criminal or extremist groups, and you will be the proud new owner of your shotgun or air rifle. Just don't forget to provide police with documentation on the specific location of the gun in your home, as well as the ammo, both of which must be locked and stored separately. And remember to have the police inspect the gun once per year and to re-take the class and exam every three years. I got this from a website. If you want to know where I'll tell you
Not trying to be a prick, but if you're going to use the Internet, you really need to learn how to Google. Cheers :) www.bbc.com/news/magazine-38365729
Republicans say: ' guns don't kill people...if someone wants to get their hands on a gun, they will' I say: if a junkie wants to shoot up heroin, no law will stop it from happening... heroin doesn't kill people... Heroin for everyone!!! and their gramma!
criminals and drugs aren't the ones doing mass shootings. criminals and drugs are everywhere in the world. but school shootings basically only happen in the us. now guess why.
ToQ 3gou Yeah, that's not the point being made. Nobody is trying to absolutely end fun violence with any one law, people just don't want it to be this easy for someone you can detect having mental problems to just walk into a store and buy a gun. Making people get a license, which requires an education, to drive doesn't stop accidents or unlicensed drivers, but it sure does greatly minimize casualties. The same thing with drugs. We limit who is allowed to distribute certain drugs in what dosages, and that minimizes deaths.
*deep breath* School shootings should not be the norm. You shouldn't have to train and arm every student for _when_ a shooter enters the building. You should stop the shooter before he can get his gun or even be able to enter a school with it. For every person against stricter gun laws, I'm sorry protecting your gun is more important than protecting lives. Edit:Listen honeybuns, can this not be about "liberals" or "conservatives" for once? Everyone's children need protecting. To understand my opinion, look at it like this: A guy with a knife is attacking another guy. Do take his knife away, or give the other guy a knife? I'm open to other opinions, so instead of arguing, use your brain to think of ideas.
Kylie Kaif see, that's where you're entirely wrong. You're looking at it as if you can control people. You can control the general population as efficiently as you can make them obey the speed limit(which also isn't proactive, it's reactive), and that's a fallacy. As far as being a proponent for my guns being more important than my children, you couldn't be more wrong. I have my firearms TO PROTECT my children. I live in a reality where bad people will get firearms(whether or not they're LEGAL. I mean c'mon, they are literally using them to BREAK THE LAW) Doesn't make much sense to put the unfair advantage in the criminal's favor just because they have a disregard for laws.
Kylie Kaif and I pray that you retort with something along the lines of "let the police do the protecting" because there are as many holes in that argument as well. However I doubt that will happen considering that most liberals were just terrorizing the streets because they're popular consensus is that the majority of police are racist hate filled neo-nazis
So how many hours per week are you standing outside your kid's school with your guns? If you are not there when your kids are there then you are a hypocrite. If you aren't protecting your kids then why are you bashing people who are actually trying to come up with ways to protect your kids? You seem like you are fine with the status quo, but people are dying in the status quo. Making things illegal doesn't mean that no-one will ever get a hold of it, it only means that fewer people will get a hold of it: for example, you can pick up beer at walmart but not cocaine. As for claiming that your kids are more important to you than your own children, you have yet to prove that. What are you doing to protect your kids while they are in school? What are you doing to protect your kids while they are in public, at a movie theatre or a concert? If you are not doing anything to protect your kids then how can you claim to love them more than your guns? You haven't proven anything, you've only said, "I'm right and you're wrong, Kylie Kaif! Fuck you! I like guns!" Until you propose a solution other than the status quo then you aree a hypocrite who is bashing someone who is trying to protect your children when you refuse to.
My boss spews everything she hears on fox. Its sickening. When I said that England and Australia had outlawed guns altogether, and change didn't happen overnight, but its working... she stomped off and refused to speak to me for the rest of the day. The gun freaks get mad at common sense.
Kassia Toth neither the UK or Australia have a really bad gang problem like the US does matter of fact South Chicago is sometimes called Chiraq because people die there quite often, and they have some of the most strict gun control laws. Also in the UK and Australia the gun homicides went down but knife homicides went up when the laws where put in place. Not to mention in europe terrorist still found ways to kill whether by bomb, truck, knife, or even gun despite there being heavy gun control. Even most Australians I talk to say that their gun laws wouldn't work in America
You do realize that Republicans are mostly against government programs. And it's a misconception that we want to give teachers guns. We just want to let them carry their own guns. Why is that insane, stupid, ridiculous, idiotic, insert predictable insult here?
@@drumpfbad5258 because when someone who is bored of kids is given/ let carry a gun, well, let's just say kids will bring their homework on time from now on.
The metal detector wouldn’t be that bad of an idea... if the majority of kids didn’t HAVE AT LEAST ONE THING VAGUELY METAL IN THEIR BAGS, INCLUDING THEIR 3 RING BINDERS
There were metal detectors at my school...I went in a different door. I'm an adult now in a different city. The high school near me is made up of four buildings with three breezeways and many, many unlocked exterior doors.
A bizarre thing I’ve noticed about Americans is that they’re at the point where they’re entirely used to the fact that there are protocols for mass shootings. It just boggles my mind that it’s normal now. That’s a sign that you’re far beyond the point where something should be done.
Hubby Bubby no the NRA was invented by Union soldiers (the ones who freed the slaves) and during the Civil Rights movement in the 60s, the NRA had all black chapters that fought and defended the NAACP from the KKK
That happened in California when the Black Panthers armed themselves to protect their communities. No laws broken. They had their right to the guns. Except they were black. Laws were changed.
I never really understand this conservative argument: "welp, this is the price of freedom." But suggesting every citizen to be armed, have training on every weapon as well as hand to hand combat, arming and training underpaid teacher (educators!), and have armed guards surveilling your highly populated building, JUST to protect yourself.... "Freedom"? How is living in constant fear for your life that you should have a gun, called freedom and is a fair price?
James Burgess Gun nuts have shitty solutions 1. Let kids duke it out (I don't even know how this will help but yeah) 2. Doing something about and blaming violent games, movies, and rap music 3. Arming teachers (horrible idea) 4. Arming students (seriously like who in the right mind would think of this shit) 5. Banning public schools and doing away with public schools systems (this is my favorite idiotic idea) There's also been comparisons between guns and meds, and guns and cars yet both cars and meds are both needed way more than guns.
Vic HN What's astounding is that you Democats act like society in America is internally messed up, and the only way to fix this issue is to yell out "Gun Control!" We have gun control, and it does its job. This false narrative that guns are being handed out to just about anybody is delusional. It's funny too, because you insult Republicans as if you have the answer to solve this issue. Democrats know that they can't compete with the overall societal impact guns have, yet what they want is to disarm Americans while pushing the idea that crime is prevalent within our society, which isn't even true because crime rates have been drastically falling for the past few decades! What's funny is that you snowflakes don't even see the big picture here. This is just simple pandering by the MMS/Democrats, and they do so by using children who are victims that don't even know how the gun process works. Step on the graves of dead children...and use this a leverage to win the debate. Morality is defebitely not your strong suit.
nobody is saying to force them to, but if it were to save their life they should be allowed to carry. how come gun violence has become such a problem now when guns are more regulated. Why was it so safe ~30 years ago with less gun legislations.
FL0ze they didn’t think so they voted no on the very ban request the parkland students travelled to Tallahassee area to protest...right in the faces of the youth they shit it down
When I hear Trump suggest arming the teachers, I'm reminded of the 1960's TV show "All in the Family", where Archie Bunker's solution to stopping airplane hijacks was by arming all of the passengers.
HAHAHAHA> You're funny, Robert. It actually reminds me of something more recent, arming airline pilots. Hmmmmm....wonder when planes being hijacked became a thing of the past? Maybe terrorists just started to think it's a pastime thing.
luthervaughn1 I would love it if you can cite one credible source showing the direct correlation between arming pilots and any other security precaution taken with planes.
I could try to answer that question, but to make sure I satisfy you with my answer, let me know what are credible sources to you....or else you might dismiss what I mention. But....if you look at yourself as a credible source, then I'd guess you can ask YOURSELF if you you believe how much devastation 911 caused, and why terrorists wouldn't want to do that again. Maybe they're too dumb to think about trying it again, or maybe they know the cockpits are locked & pilots are armed. You can always just use yourself & your recollection as a credible source if you see fit.
@@ehuddavidovich3723 they are one of the few countries that are able to be worse in responding to pandemic than my country, turkey. You guys deserve a medal for fucking up as bad as us.
Okay, so... I'm a Swede, and over here guns are illegal. Heck, even knives are not allowed to be carried without a rather good reason, someone even got a baseball bat confiscated once when the police asked the person why he was carrying the baseball bat and he answered "To protect myself". Carrying a weapon meant to do harm to other people is not permitted in Sweden. We have a lot less gun violence over here. Gun violence in Sweden make national news, when someone gets killed by a gun anywhere in Sweden, all of Sweden knows about it. I think we're doing pretty well with this whole "gun violence" thing, because we have barely any guns in circulation. The problem America faces with any form of gun control is that the market is SUPER SATURATED with guns. If you start taking guns away, the effects wouldn't be seen for many years because it will take so long for the guns to get out of the hands of the public. Add to that the honestly insane mentality of "guns are a basic right" and you get the reason I'm not visiting the US anytime soon.
well, Sweden is a far better country than the US, obviously. All nordic countries are thanks to their infrastructure, education and social programs like medical coverage for all. It's like comparing apples and oranges...a cool shiny red apple and a rotten bug infested orange.
I'm Swedish and agree on all of your points. And the people screaming; "You can't compare with a Nordic country, different system!" Then what the hell are we suppose to compare it to? The US has had this problem for so long and they're still just saying the same thing after each shooting. A school shooting in the US used to make news for days here in Sweden and across the world. Now its way too often that we have to read about a new school shooting and there is a horrible feeling of "ah again.." And we know the response its going to provoke from Trump and the NRA. These kids are amazing and I applaud them!
I’m sorry but a fire fight between a gunman and a teacher in a hallway with hundreds of kids everywhere just doesn’t seem logical. Idk maybe it’s just me...
Chris Minneapolis I am so sorry Chris. I had no idea my comment was worthy enough for your oh so brilliant answer to gun violence... Do us all a favor and stay of this. You have no idea what you’re talking about kiddo.
I'd say law of averages. But IF a teacher accidentally shot a student, and killed them by accident, what then? I've yet to hear a single damn pro-guns-in-schools shithead come up with a good response to that question.
cost of living determines a lot of the salary. here the average is 45k for veteran teachers teaching 15+ years. either way. don't arm teachers! stupid idea
If you have to register a car or a dog, ... then you should have to register your gun. Registration doesn't mean the government is coming to take your gun. They aren't coming to take your car or your dog. Also, a 28 day waiting period with background checks. No private gun sales, unless they are approved and tracked via police permit. Anything to make people make responsible for their gun ownership. And as in a lot of Europe ... mandatory annual training.
Yeah, because a criminal is really gonna follow all those rules. If a person wants to kill someone, you're not going to stop them, you're just slightly delaying the inevitable.
Hi David. Sorry to say, but you strike me as someone who hasn't thought about both sides of this. Your statement is just one of the many parroted myths that uninformed gun supporters rally behind. Based on the logic of your suggestion, ... then there should be NO laws at all ...... for anything ...... because criminals will not follow them anyway. Take an hour to consider this ...... player.fm/series/wethepeople-live-1425329/ep-114-guns-in-america
3:41 - 3:45 kids can "learn hand to hand combat". Totally aside from the school shootings issue (which Trevor addresses directly next), it's effectively saying that American Schools should end up doubling as boot camps. There was a society about 2400 years ago (a century either side) that was like that - Sparta. They focused so much on kicking ass that they missed the broader picture of what it takes for societies to survive and thrive. Yes, you may get a nation full of action heroes, but it comes at the price of rendering second-class (if not eliminating) people who are immensely talented in other areas the world values highly, even if they aren't good at hand-to-hand combat (pure science, applied science, medicine, engineering, IT work, finance and commerce, philosophy about what it means to have a good life and a good government; and even things that aren't high-tech and high-science, but still high-end creativity that supplies us with pleasure -- arts, music, theater, film, etc.). That's what you have to give up if you want a society stressing kicking ass to the point where all students have to learn hand-to-hand defense/combat. This may not stop progress entirely, but it'll sure inhibit it - meaning it'll take 1000 years to accomplish what a non-combat-based society would take only 100.
Brilliant Idea. Have all the kids learn to dodge bullets like the matrix. Cant get kill if you dont get hit. God I really how these people are capable of wiping their own drool
Thank you for speaking about this Trevor. I go to Douglas and lost someone I was friends with freshman year. It is so important that we make change for the victims of gun violence. I just delivered a speech tonight and I am going to make change every day of my life for Nick and all the other 16 victims and many other victims of gun violence.
Hannah Brooke ...... I thank you...all of you out people out here trying to change things....I have a 6yr Grand daughter and I don't want her to ever have to worry about some one shooting up her school . ....I'm sorry for your lost
You are a child and your comment exposes you as ignorant . I am here to save you from looking like a complete idiot...shut the fuck up kid you don't know what you are talking about.
I'm a teacher, and yes, as everyone knows, the main reason I wanted to become a teacher was so that I could carry a firearm at my workplace! What? No one else?
I agree. The age to buy a weapon needs to be raised, undoubtedly. But, you left out that the shame also goes with parentless households, overwhelming violence in Hollywood & tv, and (even though noone wants to admit it), every single one of these kids on some sort of pharmacutical psychopathic drug. I know you understand that most %age of commercial money to news stations come from Big Pharma....wonder why they're not mentioning it? I agree with you, but wonder if you're correct with saying the "main problem".
The politics of America has been tainted by corruption. There is only one thing anybody wants, and that's money. It's why I believe America needs to literally purge the entire government and rebuild from the ground up with some new rules in place to keep this sort of shit from happening in the future.
W.A.M.P- Cruz was being raised by democrats. That is why the school investigation did not report him. That is why the sheriff did not follow the law and report him. The FBI kicked the idea of hassling a 'right thinking' voting home under the rug. No father figure? So what. Remember those thousands of Chrysler and General Motors dealerships that the government closed? Over 95% of them were owned by registered Republican voters. We have fascist in control but don't let the people know. Investigative reporting my a**.
I live near broward. I know people with friends in broward. And when you see how your friend or cousin could have been killed, this all becomes a lot more...real. Teachers in every class told us that if there is a shooter in the school or in the class, someone you know will die. Whether it be a close friend or a mild acquaintance. They told us that they will do their best to defend us, and in the process, the teacher might die as well. At some point you need to ask yourself that if kids are being told in all honesty that they or their friends might die from a gun, it’s time to rethink gun laws, because it IS about guns. I have mental illnesses, plural, and have had them since a very young age stemming from trauma, and I currently go to therapy. But I won’t go shoot up a school. The fact that this kid was able to get a gun, a semiautomatic, should be telling of our current gun laws that allow for these sorts of tragedies to happen.
Noah Martin Not proven, we don’t know anything about this kid besides him being troubled, he got antagonized by getting expelled and the real person that should get in trouble is the parents of this kid
People are forgetting the fact that everyone knew this kid had problems. Even other students thought this kid would be a school shooter. cops were told and so was the FBI, But no one did anything. It’s failure to take something seriously. The second issue, is how the kid got a gun in the first place. An AR-15 isn’t automatic. It stands for armalight. It shoots the same as a semi auto pistol would, which is 90 percent of pistols. Maybe change he age to 21 to own a gun. Also, we’re are his parents? How come they aren’t involved in his life. He obviously wasn’t taught how to control emotion
You want a fucking cookie? You didn’t care about Newtown, Columbine, Virginia Tec.. Now it’s in your county and you want to come on RU-vid for brownie points? It didn’t matter when other people died but now that you’re city is hyped up you wanna pretend like you care
It’s not only guns. It’s mental health. You think a contempt person would have a thirst for revenge? Bullies are a large factor in these events. Not bullies as the big kids that pick on small children. Bullies as in the majority of us, belittling people and being ignorant to differences in others. Banning guns won’t change this, they will just murder with bombs, knives, vehicles.. You can’t just get rid of millions of guns over night.. We came to far; mass produced assault rifles..
Blue&Orange and I am a smidge worried that the leftist control of the media will brainwash the majority of my generation. Just hope that my fellow Gen-Zers have the desire to look at the arguments of both sides. The two guys between 6:26 and 6:40 make good points. The others? Meh.
Dan ny well, we'll see on that one my friend. But please stop attacking an entire generation if you want them to listen to your views. It is those kinds of you're-going-to-get-your-collective-ass-kicked, or you-are-not-prepared-for-life "arguments" that contribute to the ridiculization of conservatism. With that "argumentation " you are not only fitting right into the regressive left's narrative but also inderectly promoting identity politics. Convince with facts and well developed arguments, not with hasty generalizations.
I have a question for any conservative who reads this... Say we do get schools with metal detectors and police to guard the schools, who's going to pay for that? You all talk about how banks and airports have these things, but don't seem to realize those companies make a profit and from that profit they pay for security. Public schools don't make a profit. Guess where it will have to come from? You all are soooo happy with your pittance tax break, but don't seem to understand that to install the detectors and hire police for schools will have to be paid with taxes. The amount will be massive to outfit all the public schools. Now what? Are you going to complain about tax hikes once you get the bill? It's time for you all to figure out what really is important to you? Our kids, your guns, or your wallet?
You act like the main principle of conservatism in america is minimal taxes. I think you are severely misinformed if you believe the right wing in America prioritizes balancing the debt over the safety of children. There are already many publicly funded metal detectors in America, and they are not exclusive to Democratic states or cities.
wraithchild G getting stricter gun laws. Not much money is really needed just to add more rules, unlike installing airport security in every school in the U.S. And recall that massive concert shooting in what I believed to be Vegas? What you gonna do? Install security in every public building?
"Why stop the shootings from happening in the first place when we could just train people to fight the shooters and slightly reduce the number of dead?"
