Wide Boyz

‪@tobysegar‬ from ‪@STORROR‬ puts his coaching in the Wide Boyz cellar and out on Gritstone, into full practice as Tom and Pete get him on his first ever Trad lead. This is impressive and not one to be missed!!
The route climbed is Tom Thumb (E2 5b) at Cratcliffe in the Peak District. A grade that many climbers spend years working towards, and with instruction from Pete and Tom, Toby throws himself head on to this steep strenuous route
Massive thanks to Toby for joining us on the channel, we're still psyched phenomenal progress made in both crack climbing and trad climbing in such a short space of time. Can't wait for the next one!!

Maybe have a talk with him about Storror and respecting Joshua Tree/fragile desert landscapes/ecosystems in general? Not sure if you're familiar with their whole parkouring on Joshua Trees fiasco, and their not-so-apologetic response.

First trad lead and it's a UK 5c!?!? Thats 10b/c or so YDS. What an incredible line too! Great choice. You can tell Toby really appreciated it and for good reason. Having two of the best trad climbers in the world coaching you through your first lead is invaluable. Nicely done Toby!

11:15 think we can all relate to that amount of forearm pump on a route 🤣 Fantastic video as always, it just keeps getting better! Absolutely love the trad videos including gear placements, some channels seem to leave that out on trad routes but I think it's a big part of watching

toby is such a natural with the camera, especially that outro... like he said if youve a friend thats really good at something.... His bits talking to camera pushed the video forward, as someone who is on the periphery of climbing it made it way more engaging for a random viewer since I dont have deep knowledge to analyze his climbing tech and movement, he gave a bit of story to keep it interesting. im sure its incredibly strange being out with your mates to go talk to camera as if its your buddy but it makes all the difference as a viewer having those in between clips that create/flesh out a story.

You could really feel from the first second how tense Toby was through all of that - fantastic job of showing that bravery is not about not being afraid, but about facing the music (or the wall) anyway. Amazing job Toby, and great job guiding him through it.

So cool to see Toby trad climb! I started parkour and ninja warrior about 3 years ago and immediately started watching storror and Toby to build strength and technique in those sports. I’ve also been climbing since I was 5 and started read climbing about 2 years ago. It feels very cool to see Toby process the placements and deal with the fear of the first trad lead much like how I did on my first lead. I don’t I just think it’s really cool to see someone from one sport I love so much cross over to another sport I love and feel the same things I feel!

Thanks for another great video your content is some of the best!! Couple of things that jump out at me the first thing is something everyone can take away and that’s the advantage of having quality coaching/instructors to allow for quick and safe progression then sadly something we can’t all take away is to have the natural talent of Toby the combination of them both and we could see some quality adventures if Toby’s willing to stick with it!!!

Seriously one of the most impressive first trad routes I've ever seen, only been climbing a couple of years indoors and only 10 or so trad routes in the D/VD range so nowhere near E2 standards myself but I found out I'm actually OK with cracks a couple of weeks ago, totally skinned my hand when I did come off but made it up onto the 4th of 4 artificial cracks. Not quite a tick but I'll do it next attempt. Toby's commitment to that was impressive, the effort was clear to see, congratulations! Don't try this at home... Not without the wide Boyz by your side anyway. And crack gloves will be my next purchase. 😂
