In case anyone wants to know what this scene is from: Actors: -(Female) Ginger Rogers -(Male) Fred Astaire - (Sitting Male) Eric Blore Movie: -Swing Time (1936) I't a lovely movie. One of my favorites. Edit 7/15/2020: Wow. I thought this comment had gotten lost and never to be seen again. Hah! A few updates: - I've updated the movie year. (Thank you for the correction.) - The original song samples are by Lil Hardin Armstrong and the song is called "Oriental Swing".
Met my wife swing dancing 20 years ago. Danced all the time, out 3x a week at our peak. 15 years later, she was diagnosed with dementia, and we still danced. Arranged for a group of swing dancers to perform for her and some of the other residents at the facility where I had to place her after six years of caring for her. I managed to get in one last swing dance with my girl in April 2019. She passed away last month in June. On her headstone is the line from City of God, " Let us turn our tears into dancing.".
It's actually gonna be hard, cardi b and a lot of other celebrities can't just stop what they're doing because a majority of fans love what they do and many fans prefer what they're making right now
But on second thought, they could ask their fans if they want classic (but not all modern artists could do that because they would still need to learn how to make that sort of music)
Gardening Hoe Either that or we could just see a rise of separate Electro Swing/Jazz artists enter the limelight more in the 2020s (like Jamie Berry and Parov Stelar)
Yeah, but I'm sure alot of girls don't want to wear those dresses and alot of guys don't want to wear those suits either .. It's only the aesthetic you enjoy. Like how people want a pet dog but only because it's cute and they don't really want to care for it.
@@thebadger8644 i love the style of dress and suits. I also like 1940s zoot suits and wrote a design essay for it. As for the dog analogy, i get what you mean but thats not everyone.
Not usually big on crying, but watching this this morning had me tears running down my face. I think it's just been a while for me seeing people dance and be happy.
My husbands convinced because it will just because we’re getting ready to enter the 20’s again. Haha Better believe we’re playing a ton of this at the 2020 NYE Party!!!!
When I get married I want my husband and I to do this type of dance for our first dance. None of that typical sway back and forth stuff. We're gonna be fun.
Lyrics: Arab sheiks on the burning sands, Come into their harems and clap their hands, Said, "Come on, girls, are you ready to play? Let's have a little more of that swingin' today." Now, in the land of Fu Manchu, The girls all now do the Suzie-Q, Clap their hands in the center of the floor, Saying, "Ching, ching, chop-suey, swing some more!" Now, geisha girls in old Japan, Wink behind their peacock fans, Since they learned to say, "Yeah! Let's swing it like Amelican's swing swing dance!" Now, Gypsy caravans have changed their mode, They truck down the Romany road, With their hi-de-hos, and their hey-hey-diddle, Doin' the swing on the Gypsy fiddle. Them eastern wisemen know the story, Of the swing with Oriental glory, They stroke their beards and grin, Sayin', "Swing, little children, till the dawn comes in!" Now, geisha girls in old Japan, Wink behind their peacock fans, Since they learned to say, "Yeah! Let's swing it like Amelican's swing swing dance!" Gypsy caravans have changed their mode, They truck down the Romany road, With their hi-de-hos, and their hey-hey-diddle, Doin' the swing on the Gypsy fiddle.
Electronic remixing, which makes this song, did not exist in any reasonable extent until some 30 years ago, and the genre "Electro-Swing" is less than a decade old.
0:25 anyone else enjoying how PERFECTLY on beat his hand clap was? I mean, the entire video is amazingly edited and very on beat, but THIS ONE HAND CLAP sends me-
Was introduced to chill trap music just a few days ago by my sister, stumbled upon Caravan Palace and been falling deeper into the electro-swing world. I feel so blessed to be able to find the genre. God bless these electro-swing musicians.
+Briana Mia - "miss the days when people actually used to dance!!!! this looks like so much fun!!!" Yes! I miss the days when we saw so many movies with accomplished dance routines such as this one. I mean, this requires an *astoundingly* high level of skill and talent plus hours and hours of practice. Some of these famous dance routines were filmed as single takes - from start to finish, no stopping. "Now do it again." Other directors used multiple cameras and multiple takes and the dance routine tooks days - even weeks - to film, before they were edited into a seamless 5 minute or so sequence. The stamina required boggles the mind!
+artsbeatla I think she really meant that this style of dancing and other styles such as ballroom dancing etc. have gone out of fashion with young people and she wishes they were still so popular because it looks like a serious amount of fun
The most impressive is that it "looks" like he's leading the whole dance, but great God Ginger Rogers is doing a crazy ass job dancing on heels with that ease and lightness, looking like she's just getting led while she's mastering the whole thing.
She is lead, it doesnt just looks like it. She definately mastered the part, but most of her balance comes in acompany with fred's balance. The way you say that sounds as if being lead makes one somehow inferior.
She trained excessively and took a lot of pain to look so professional. She said once in an interview after a scene in one of her astaire/rogers films the back of her heels were drenched in her blood where she had done so many takes.
It's not really that hard. As a follow, you are almost always on your toes, so as long as the heel fits well enough that your heel doesn't slip, and as long as the heel isn't too tall, it's fine. I often find it a bit easier to dance in heels, because they force my weight forward and keep me on my toes. For modern dancers, there are clear elastic straps that you put around your shoe and foot to help keep shoes on. I also use them when I'm riding my scooter with shoes that have a tendency to slip off!
Hahaha yes! I listened to it yesterday for the first time since my drum teacher told me about this genre. After that I only had this music in my brain. Couldn’t forget that rhythmic 😂

Malin Hensel Yeah it's super racist. Unfortunate reality of the times :/ But I think this song serves as a good message of what electro swing is. A romanticization of the times without actually understanding what the 1920s actually was like. It's like adapting the 1920s for our modern world to evoke a similar feeling while trying to pretend that all the shitty aspects didn't exist.
The Termina Organist that is not so ok if ghis becomes mainstream people will flood this and ruin this genre and it will be hard to find gems like this
I grew up on great movie musicals. I still love the great musicals from the 30s through the 70s. In my opinion, the greatest eras for movie musicals were between the 1930s to 1950s. Such a great escape to simply sit back, relax, and imagine myself dancing with some of the greatest dancers that ever lived.
7 years ago me and my wife did "first dance" (it is a tradition in Poland to take a first dance for newly wed ppl) to this song. One of the best tunes I have ever heard in my life. We dance to it whenever one of us plays it - it's beautiful, and I hope every one of you will find your second half to dance with, just as I did
We gotta get Electro swing mainstream this decade. Happy Twenties everyone Edit: (December 30,2020) I am sorry everyone. What a terrible year it has been for the world. Hope you are all safe wherever you are 🙏
Nice dance sequence to the song. They make it look so effortless but that's hard work. Ha, the gentleman at the beginning who is asked to "have a seat while I show you how it's done" is British actor Eric Blore. He was in 5 of the 9 Fred/Ginger movies : Flying Down to Rio, The Gay Divorcee, Top Hat, Swing Time and Shall We Dance. I can't recall which one this is. He looks different here, doesn't usually have the moustache. Often plays a valet or gentleman's gentleman, waiter etc... Funny guy.....Thanks for making the vid.
Diego Manjarrez No , Actually Trev B is 100% correct, what this guy has is the perfect definition of swag, the that shit the retarded youth mistake for swag these days is everything but swag
Fun fact, Alastor from Hazbin Hotel died around 1933, which means that there is a good chance that this exact style of music is what played on his radio show.
First, know I love you very much right now and you have very good tastes. Second, if you want be my personal hero, can you tell me what the name of the dance is? I learn 20 min ago than it's not fox trot.
yOU HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA HOW LONG I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS SONG. YOU JUST DONT KNOW. HOW HARD I HAVE BEEN LOOKING. THERE WAS A TALENT SHOW AT MY SCHOOL ON JUNE 13TH AND SOME GIRL WAS TWIRLING A BATON TO THIS FUCKING SONG. EVER SINCE I HAVE WANTED TO FIND IT BECAUSE OH MY GOD IT IS SO CATCHY. IM SO HAPPY. IM SO FUCKING HAPPY. ( and so fucking sorry you had to read through that )

Rebooker Booker The joke was a secondary realization, the first was simply that people saying Panty is an uncomfortable experience for everyone involved
This is by far one of my most favorite song to listen to, I listen to this song everyday even in school. As a gentleman with high class and someone who is in love with the 1800s and 1900s I'm addicted to this bad boy of a century!
+Duck Wrath I completely 100% agree. This song makes me have emotion and no songs do that today. I still get major chills from this song and I've listened to it for a whole year. No artists today can say that their songs give out chills. Also, what happened to instruments?
Aden B. I dunno. Maybe they threw them out an 100th floor of a building, and replaced them with doing noise and mixing them to create a combination of sounds. I think you already know of what i'm talking about here.
I love it how her dresses spin! When I was a kid and my mum was about to make (or buy) me a dress or a skirt, I always said: But it has to spin! I'm 32 now and it is still important. And makes me ridiculously happy when my skirt or dress spins.
"his equal"?? fuck no! Ginger Rogers is WAY better than Fred Astaire! She is doing these dances in Heels! With weighted dresses (there are small weights sewn in those skirts so they fly like they do in the video)! She danced her feet bloody in those shoes!
OK. This dance is too perfect. What perfection encounter in these dancers, in that woman with such elegance dancing so much speed. That perfection encounter in the synchronization of both. In those times the dance touched perfect levels.
And if they DID break, the take ended up on the cutting room floor. Interesting to compare the style it forces on her, in that video, though. Astaire (as always) is just so loose, relaxed and effortless; Rogers has to stay much more precise and controlled by comparison. What caught my eye in particular is whenever cross over behind and toe-tap (there's a sequence 26 seconds in, for example); Astaire does a HUGE cross-over - 18 inches or more - whereas Rogers is a very discrete, lady-like (but, more importantly, stable) 2-3 inches. And Astaire frequently sways way out of the vertical - which Rogers barely does at all unless she's supported, for obvious reasons. But the really big thing about the two of them is that I never really find myself watching one to the exclusion of the other. That's a mark of greatness.
***** I'll check, lemme get back with you on that. *dial-tone* Okay, I've convened with the spirits and they said yes. There's a lot of brass instruments in the original piece. Also, they told me to mention that you can find it here: /watch?v=mMDBluSMUas So says the All-powerful, Mystic Baby. That will be $500, I need a new Binky. :3
In one film she wore a dress that had glass beads on fringes. When she spun around with her arms out the beaded fringes became like cat 'o nine tails and whipped Astair in his hand and sliced the skin open. He kept dancing though and finished the take. These ppl suffered for their art.
