This video is about what we do to take care of our flock of three parrots on a daily basis. it includes everything from waking them up, feeding them, cleaning the cages, playing with them, showers, and ending the day by getting them to their sleep cages. This video was inspired by all the questions we saw online since we adopted Bella the African Grey parrot and also by the questions that we had when we started this journey. We hope that this video is helpful for the new parrot mommies and daddies out there and that it answers any questions you may have about how to take care of a parrot, whether you are a beginner or experienced parrot owner!!!
This video features our three birds:
Happy the Green Cheek Conure
Bella the African Grey parrot
Lemon the Mayer's parrot.

Why do you put the birds in small cages at night? I thought you would be able to leave them in their large cages. I have watched many RU-vid bird sites and not one of them switches cages at night.

Just don’t understand having cats with birds, but I’m open minded.
@FlockofFive
@FlockofFive 6 лет назад
We used to think it was okay to keep our cats and birds together under supervision. Since then, we have learned that this is in fact not safe. One day our cat looked at our African Grey in a way that, if you know cats, looked as if she was going to pounce on our Grey. At this point in time, at no point are they in proximity with each other, even under supervision. They are kept in separate areas of the house. I hope this helps.

My heart skipped a beat when the cat walked in the room, how does the cat act around your birds?
@FlockofFive
@FlockofFive 6 лет назад
Hi Logan! My cat acts like she doesn't see them. Now, having said that we never let our birds and cats in the same space unsupervised, and one of the parties must be within arms reach. Ideally we would keep them in separate spaces and we do most of the time, but we do allow exceptions from time to time.

Any advice on getting your bird to eat fruits and veggies? My bird refuses to eat them. I’ve tried eating them in front of him, hiding them in his food, and I even baked a birdie bread with fruits and veggies mixed in, but no luck.

My African Grey is 13yrs old now.... I've had him from a 4 month old baby and in all that time I have NEVER been successful in getting him to eat fruit or veggies. His main diet has always been Lafaber Nutriberries which are full of vitamins and minerals and of course the different varieties contain fruits and veggies. He is supplemented with occasional pieces of cheese... 3 to 4 times a week and loves cooked chicken and beef now and then. I gave up on the fresh veggies and fruit years ago and he is a very healthy happy talkative parrot.

Is it normal for my grey African to have red feathers on his belly!?!? Please help I think it might be PBFD!!
@kyram1740
@kyram1740 4 года назад
Some african greys have a few red feathers that grow naturally in their genetics and is known as red factor. So if your African grey is still really young and has only molted once or twice in its lifetime, then it could just be in their genes to have a few red feathers. If your african grey is old however and just now showing them then it could be pbfd. I'm not an expert or professional by any means, and dont have a parrot myself, but I've done extensive research on them and though it give you a hand in what I know. If your grey shows any other signs of pbfd such as abnormal feathers or beak then I would take them to the vet as soon as possible. Hopefully all is well with your birdy!!

@mrgio3870 4 года назад
Kyra Mitchell: Thank you! Yes great Africans can live up to 60 years and mine is only 6. He is probably not sick but I got really worried because I read online that red feathers can be a sign of PBFD. However I have contacted many others and any RU-vid videos about birds that I can find I most of them told me the same thing you did. I just got very worried for my birdy! Your help is truly appreciated!

Hi Thanks for all the tips.I would love to put the sisal ropes in my birds cages but local stores don't handle and can't seem to find online either. Did you order them online? I'm considering increasing my flock, my birds are handfed and are babies but I would like to adopt from a rescue. There are so many parrots waiting for homes. You rehomed Bella, how many years have you had her, how was the process of the adoption? Thanks
@FlockofFive
@FlockofFive 6 лет назад
Hello Camille! We got the sisal from an aviary. They used to be available through Bed Bath and Beyond if you are in North America. If you are in the US, then it should be more widely available and in the large pet store chains. It's difficult to find in Canada and you may be able to get them from a local breeder. We have had Bella for nearly a year. We were actually contacted by an aviary on behalf of Bella's owner. The sanctuary owner knew us as experienced bird owners who were looking to expand our flock. Normally the process involves visiting the sanctuary and getting familiar with the birds there over multiple visits. Once you have chosen one you can start the application process which could take anywhere from a week to a month and will vary from sanctuary to sanctuary. Sometimes as an experienced bird owner the process can be sped up especially during screening. Because Bella was a special needs case it took about 2weeks to find an ideal way to transport her and to make the transition as stress free as possible as she had aggression issues and was underweight. Hope this helps!
@camilledykas6417
@camilledykas6417 6 лет назад
I'll continue to look for the sisal ropes. I am switching them slowly to Harrison's pellets for better nutrition, I've had them now a month and everyday I put a small amount of chop in a separate food bowl with a sprinkle of millet seed on it to attract them, cause they love it, my lovebird just won't touch it but I did see my cockatiel this morning pick at it. So many there is hope.

Is a separate cage for sleeping necessary? I'm new to all this and finding it a little difficult to find reliable information. Thank you!
@FlockofFive
@FlockofFive 5 лет назад
Hey there! It depends on how old your bird is and if he/she is prone to night frights - the three birds we had in this video, the african grey had a flipped toe and was not stable on her feet and therefore could not be in a tall cage while she was sleeping, and the other two were quite young and prone to night frights and subsequent falling. If your bird has a condition/ is young/ prone to night frights, I would certainly recommend getting a night cage for them.
@deadmike2
@deadmike2 5 лет назад
instead of having so many different birds, why not 2 greys? You know its better for them. imo cats and birds are never a good idea. I know birdholer, who lost birds because of a cat, which did nothing but being a cat.

Which type of food is best for baby parrot and how many times ?
@FlockofFive
@FlockofFive 6 лет назад
For a baby parrot - is he/she weaned? If so, I would start with a gentle diet of pellets and veggies & grains, with pellets being at least 70% of the diet.
@FlockofFive
@FlockofFive 6 лет назад
Veggies and grains should be fed once a day, with your baby being left with the food no longer than 1h each feeding. Pellets should be available where your bird is around the whole day. Be sure to monitor his/her weight daily to ensure that the intake is adequate :)

Hi Edgar! No, that is her sleep cage, where she sleeps because she was still healing from her leg weakness at the time due to her background before we adopted her. If you watch the rest of the video, we do spend quite a bit of time describing her day cage and how it is set up to accompany her disability. Her day cage is an extra large cage made for birds like African greys or Amazons. Here is a great guideline on picking cage sizes for your birds: www.thespruce.com/bird-cage-sizes-4065662
