Hey guys, thanks for watching my latest video on basic training for your parrots of all kinds including cockatiels, conures, budgies, macaws etc
Positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to train your parrot to learn basic behaviours and bond with it! Target Training is also an essential skill that helps so much in training.
Training also provides mental stimulation for your bird and can be fun for both you and them!
Don't forget to keep your training sessions prompt and no more than 5-10minutes. Also try to end each session on a positive note.
The clips shown in the video show just what you can achieve using these training methods, but don't forget it takes time, patience and effort too!
This video features a bunch of clips of our parrots doing behaviours/tricks for those who love to see them!

Instructions unclear, birds are now feeding me seed to do tricks. I've been using positive reinforcement with my mom, Buddy is now comfortable stepping up for her. Every time my budgies visit me at the computer I always give them a few millet seeds. Soon as they start to sing I will reward that too. I want them to make songs as much as possible. Buddy sees this and is getting more and more vocal too. Parrots are so monkey see monkey do. So far Buddy can use a vocal on command, spin, step up, fly to me, fly back to his cage, give kisses, and DAP! (bumping his beak into my fist) Spin is his newest one. Trying to not overwhelm him with stuff considering he had to unlearn so many bad behaviors first. I am always worried I am going to reinforce a bad behavior, but haven't so far.

Let's all eat that seed! Awesome! also positive (pardon the pun) that it works for you both! The rewarding when the budgies sing is called capturing! It's a great way of training behaviours such as speaking/singing on que or displaying wings! Mimic behaviour is also a good way of teaching. But, did you know cats are better behaviour mimics than parrots (within the same species!) I found that really fun as a fact! Sounds great to me! Lots of fun tricks there! It is important as you mentioned to not overwhelm them and take a steady pace! Also wise of you, generally it isn't a disaster if you do though as you can rectify it at another point!

@@ornithologydude8649 They will probably bite it off and eat it! The best tools are stuff like chop sticks, wooden sticks, hard paper sticks etc! Things that they won't just bite through and are...well sticks!

@@TheParrotTeacher i think they will, gotta get lots of toys and perches tho. Would you get one conure first, let it bond with you and then introduce a second bird, or get two at once? Im curious about that!

@@nemil238 I'd say that's entirely upto you! I don't think it impacts your bond much! Although if you got a pair they'd already be likely bonded saving some hassle later!

I have a sun conure and had no problem with teaching him to step up on my finger, he was doing it well for about 2-3wks. then he started biting at the fingers and refuses to step up 🤔. Now the only way to get him on you is to use the shoulder and from shoulder to back on his perch . He hates the fingers /hands . Not sure what caused this dramatic change. What can I do and how ?
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 7 месяцев назад
So I’d look to see if there’s been a break of trust with your hands. Have you forced him to step up? Have you grabbed him? Do you always reinforce for stepping up and maintain the behaviour. I have lots of content on the channel that may help!

You’re a fantastic teacher. I just got a 9 mo. old Sun Conure and he’s loud. The only thing I have thought about doing is when he’s on my shoulder and he gets loud, i just touch my shoulder so that he’ll fly away for about five seconds. Is that a good training technique? It certainly gets him to be quite a little bit.. I don’t exactly understand why have negative reinforcement doesn’t work because I would think this is a negative reinforcement and he flies right back and lands on your shoulder. I think I’m just taking away what he wants which is to be on my shoulder and if he screams he’s not allowed to do so Also how did you get your birds to pick up those objects to put them in them bins? I am very impressed with your teaching. I train dogs, but training a bird is different
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Год назад
Hey Nancy, Thank you! Sun conures can be exceptionally loud at times! With screaming it'd be worth working out why he's doing it. Is it for attention, fear of something, other movements/sounds? I have some videos on those topics! I'd probably not touch your shoulder to get him to fly away. You could pop him elsewhere and then give him a chance to earn reinforcement another way though! Remember negative reinforcement is removing something from the environment to make the behaviour you want to see more likely. If you want your little guy to be quiet, does removing your should encourage that? I have a tutorial on that! I have a few trick training videos you can peek at to learn how to do it!

Love your videos man! We've just got a Cockatiel, they've said he's about 6 months old and wanting to start training with him, we know he likes millet, are there any other treats you can recommend?

Hey Anthony, Millet is usually the top for cockatiels, but they all have individual preferences. Have you watched my treat hierarchy video yet? That would be a good place to start on finding out!

Hey Marta, We usually use sunflower seed or hemp seed as rewards. However your Quaker may have different tastes so it's useful to do a treat hierarchy test with them (I have videos on how on my channel!)

First of all, your bird is beautiful! Conures are gorgeous birds. My bird has a scheduled diet, he gets pellet in the morning and seed in the evening to encourage him to eat more pellets. This is perfect for little Coconut because he is always excited to eat his seeds in the evening, and this is a perfect motivation for him and even after one day he is doing incredible! Thank you so much for this tutorial :) Also, do you have any tips on getting the moisture out of vegetables, or where to get them? I think since my bird is a cockatiel, which originates from Australia which is very dry, he will not eat vegetables unless they are bone dry. Or, do you know where to get things like freeze dried vegetables for him? Thank you!!
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Год назад
Thank you for the kind comment! I actually have a diet playlist which covers some of what you’ve asked! It’s sensible to feed seed in the afternoon too as it’s more desirable so that’s an awesome way of doing it! Cockatiels can eat fresh however, ours along with many others do!

@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 3 года назад
Hey Tuqa, Bonding training would be the best bet! Getting birds used to hands/stepping onto them is a form of training too! I have videos on bonding and step up training you can take a peek at if you fancy it! Ironically targeting is a good technique for training birds who dislike hands. Many people use long sticks like chop sticks to provide more distance between them and the bird!

Bruh, should I buy a baby cockatiel (11weeks)????what's your suggestion?
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 3 года назад
Hey there! Do you already have one? If so consider how they will interact with each other. Also you'll need to keep them potentially separated. Also, make sure the cockatiel is fully weaned (as in eating solid food only) because if it isn't I wouldn't get him. Basically, I always advise anyone wanting to get a bird to make sure they are fully prepared in every way to take it on. They are clever little creatures and need lots of time, attention and care!
