This is great, I do something similar, but I use a cheap plastic Christmas Tree stand to hold my branch. It works wonders, its quick, cheap & easy to clean. When my birds hack down my big branches, I can just go trim the mountain ash in my front yard & replace them. Much easier than building a stand with plywood & bird poop comes off plastic so much easier than wood. Hope this helps! So glad you're active again on RU-vid! God bless! ❤

This is where living in Australia is great :) I actually used fallen branches I found in a dumping pile (people tend to dump big branches from backyard trees at natural looking bush areas at the ends of streets) & thought the bark was already off them cause they were smooth, but my parrots figured out it wasn't & took to removing it & are still having a ball doing that a couple of months later. We have ample perfect branches here for any project like this :)

So we (husband and I) went hiking above the ocean and some branches weirdly fell into the trunk of our car somehow. Not sure how 😃 Now that these branches are somehow are in our home we might as well make them into a bird tree 🤷‍♀️

I love that people are making their own things for their birds. I don’t think buying play stands or even toys are worth it at all. I make everything for my alexandrine parakeet from trees and plants in my yard. I’ve just spent the entire afternoon going through the recycling bin and getting every bit of paper and cardboard in there to make shredding toys. If you are sure that the wood is safe then it is a great idea to leave bark on the play stand and toys as parrots absolutely love to rip the bark off. It is brilliant entertainment for them.

I’ve had birds for many years. I have never disinfected a branch. When I was younger I had cockatiels, and conure I just looked up whatever was a safe tree and brought the branch in bark and all They had the most fun peeling it off. I never took from a rotten tree it was always a fresh branch that fell. That way the bark was nice and tight. (( I’m not sure if an old rotting tree would be the same.) Anyway, good health is so important. People clean too much.

Great video as per usual. I'll definitely be making one. Could you please do a video/tutorial on "tricks" that can be used when your bird is sick or at the vet? e.g taking oral medication, safe restraints etc? After a stressful week of medicine my budgie now hates my hands, any sort of towel or cloth, and his travel crate. I began training my other birds to voluntarily interact with the end of a syringe filled with water but they flick the water away instead of drinking it which wouldn't work if it was a precise dosage. Restraint-wise I can touch their backs (like in your tunnel trick tutorial) but if I flip them over they get stressed and I get bitten. Please help!

@FlockTalk
@FlockTalk 3 года назад
You don’t have to, the reason I did was because maple branches can be prone to harbouring funguses under the bark. However it is important to note that just because wild birds may be exposed to these risks it doesn’t mean they’re immune to them. Animals in our care are our responsibility, keeping them safe from illnesses is a top priority. Just because wild birds get sick from these risks doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prevent our own birds from the same risks!

Do you know if wood carpenters glue is safe to use? I'm thinking it would be safe as long as you immediately wipe up all the squeeze out. That's really good trick if you do have a split branch is to fill the split with wood glue clamp it and then use a damp cloth to get all of the squeeze out off and then when it's dry scrape it down with a knife and then it's good and solid it to drill into. It might be okay now that you've drilled into it and put the screw in but it can dry out over time and will fail

The wood on my bird's play stand split, and is now swiveling. Any ideas on how to repair it?
@s.w.3815
@s.w.3815 Год назад
Very nice..just 2 questions.. First, Why didn't you use (non-toxic!) Wood Glue on the joints to keep them safe n secure long term? If you're worried the birds might get to glue residue, it cleans up with water if you were to accidentally let it drip on any surface. It makes a HUGE difference on projects like this! Second, I understand the birds are going to chew the branches, (that's why I use Willows wood), so they definitely should NOT be painted. You can clean any of the branches with wire perch scrapers or even wire or waterproof sand paper since you can't wash them, but why didn't you paint (kid safe non-toxic) the base? The surface layer might have a 'seal' but it's very thin and will quickly scrub off. The other layers of plywood aren't so 'lucky' and will mold if they get wet. Bacteria will grow between those layers pretty quickly too. You could have used 1/2 round molding (since you had a handy man!) to do it up right, but silicone (it's 'inert'!) would have sealed the edges. You wouldn't need a big caulking gun full, just a smaller tube tube or two, depending on the size of the base, and smear it on with a gloved hand. Paint would have sealed it too.. I guess my thought are with cleaning and the health of the birds. Budgie dropping are easy but other birds, bigger parrots and Softbills are alot softer and wetter inviting mold, mildew and bacteria especially. Your construction, concern for the birds health and wellness is otherwise great and the way you present it is entertaining. ;) Keeping up the good work! 'Silver n Flock'
@FlockTalk
@FlockTalk Год назад
Most choices were made exclusively for bird safety and to be cost friendly with materials we already had available that were bird safe. Didn’t want to seal the base in any regard due to the fumes involved in doing that and the fact that my birds are attuned to going down to the floor to forage I didn’t want there to be any risk if they happened to chew on the base while they were down there. Avoided wood glue because of ingestion risks again, even if you wipe it away they can still chew through the branches and end up getting to that layer ending up with adhesive in their mouth. I’m sure they’re safe to do if done right but when making something myself I’d rather there be as close to 0 risk for the birds as possible.

You would have to know the background of the tree, ask you mom or dad if they have sprayed it with pesticides

Do you use living trees or some that are on the ground????

I had a living tree on my yard that was slowly dying so these branches are from that! You can collect fallen branches as well but you have to be very careful to ensure it is not rotting, mouldy, or infested with bugs! And that you’re able to correctly ID the type of wood by branch alone

I have a classmate who has a pet Amazon parrot, and I am worried about its health. I emailed my classmate when I noticed that on the zoom meetings, the parrot, Larry, was always in his cage and always squaks. he said that Larry bites him so he just keeps Larry in the cage. He also told me Larry is on a seed diet. I sent him a respectful email saying that I was worried about Larry's health and I made a Google doc with a bunch of info about cage size, diet etc. He said "we will get Larry more toys" which is good, but he really needs to do more than just getting toys and I'm not sure how to help. I asked my friends who have owned birds, and they both agree that Larry needs to get out of his cage ASAP. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can convince him to take better care of him?

A good-quality, sharp pocketknife would have de-barked it much more easily.

I have some pictures of the bird I might be getting, can you take a look and see if you can see anything that is something I will have to change if I get her? From what I can see there's no self mutilation, and no splitting on the ends of her feathers but I'm not an expert and I'm still looking for avian veterinarian places near me. the current owners do take good care of her from what I've heard. I just wanna make sure she's healthy and I'd greatly appreciate it if you or anyone could give me some tips. She will be my first bird but I've been doing research everyday for the past week I'm constantly watching your videos, asking my friends that own birds what I need for her and what I need to stay away from. Any information will be help even if its something I've already heard. I want to know everything I can to keep her happy, healthy, and for as long as I can. Again anything will be greatly appreciated. :)
