I have a question. If I create cotton fabric and sell to another person to create jeans. Is the market value of cotton fabric considered in GDP calculation? Because to me, the cotton fabric is final goods right?

Marcus Lee No, if the cotton fabric is used in another level of production it would be considered double counting to calculate both the cotton fabric sold to the person adding value (the jean maker) to the and the and the jeans sold to consumers. Wheat is an intermediary good of bread. We only calculate GDP based on the value of the bread produced since the wheat is now "inside" the bread and should not appear in the accounts twice.

Illegal activities are in GDP. It may be hard to measure but it is included conceptually

@PeteJohnMcGarvey If someone consumes that piece of cotton then the theory will consider the "piece of cotton" as a final good, i.e. final good = consumption. Economics just count the end of the chain because otherwise we would be counting somethings twice.

Lol it costs so much more to make this jean than what it's being sold for... Now I think I understand why raw material producers are so poorly paid. This is dark.
