We are going to get to work on this '38 Buick. It runs but will not crank, what will we find? Plus Clyde drops in for a visit! Starter Parts: www.aerrebuild.... Battery: Jim's Battery Manufacturing Co. (800) 426-7580
Jayhawker, I love to watch you diagnose a problem and see it through. You do a fantastic job, but sometimes you don't give yourself enough credit. You have an unbelievable skill set and your videos are a joy to watch.
Outstanding! That was really interesting. I had never heard of a series/parallel switch for six to twelve volts in a car. Great troubleshooting and resolving of multiple issues!
Great work my 1949 had a half crank sounded like a dead battery or bad started I also considered ignition switch. I own a 1949 Chevy sedan skyeline stock 6Volts first I checked battery & battery cables & connections after I load tested solenoid I found out my solenoid was only putting out 2.3 volts I replaced it up and running. Loved your 38 Chevy tutorials.✝️
One of the first things my mechanic uncle showed me was repairing the clicking solenoid of my 55 Pontiac. I didn't see whether you did this, but the contact disc can be flipped over to provide a new, unpitted surface to contact the new unpitted surfaces of the reversed contact bolt heads. Like new!
Congrats on the repair, it shows that knowledge is not essential, intelligence is. This is hands down my favorite old car model from the 1907-1950, I can't get enough of that front side, I just wish they celebrated this model by issuing a centennial edition with the same body and analog replica dashboard and interiors with a modern power train of course. Gee, I know I'm asking too much! I loved the car but hated your "oldifying" effect because it is not the way an old film scratches, it is vertical scratch lines, but I hate those filters too because there are not random effects but a repetitive loop and that kills the illusion anyway.
solenoid not sending 6 volt great 38 Chevy tutorials my 49 had same issues when I hit switch I had a 2.3 volts was not getting 6 volts replaced it and she’s up and running but my 6V battery was good and starter all correct cables. I thought was my battery then my starter Chevy talk forum mentioned test solenoid I did wala. I seen you did work on solenoid and cranked over great video. Just my experience with half crank on a 6 volt.
Great video , I hope no one follows your schematic diagram of series batteries, You should erase the lines between the pos + and neg - on each battery so no one shorts out their batteries. Cheers!
Thanks, but that's exactly how a series circuit works. Just like putting batteries inline into a flashlight (torch😁). That way you're doubling voltage but keeping the same amps. Thanks again for watching.
I just installed the gas tank in my 40 Buick Special, and noticed a circular depression in the trunk floor right above the sending unit. This makes me think that the circle could be cut out to give access to the sender through the trunk floor, which is a fairly common (but not common enough!) practice in later cars.
Great questions! So I didn't do a step by step video on the rebuild as I explained but if you are putting sintered bronze bushings in, you "load" them with oil and then press them in. The batteries are still a concern but when they come with a $500 price tag we are going to work with it for now. Just the fact that I got the front half to reverse back to the correct polarity is a huge win! Like I mentioned, I don't own a 6v low amp battery tender but I did order one and we will keep it on that and see if we can resurrect this battery. The charger I have is a 6v fast charge and I've been trying to use a lot of discretion with it so that I won't over cook these batteries. Thanks for watching!
I enjoy your channel, it seems you work on about everything I have-- a37 Buick special, 2 -49 Chevy pickups, a51 Chevy deluxe torpedo back, a 55 Chevy 2 ton with a grain bed , and a 62 Chevy 3/4 ton step side. I’m always looking for info on repairing them. I’m in the process of restoring one of the 49’s now(5 window), 3 are restored. I’m in south central Kansas about 80 miles from Wichita . It seem now all the mechanics and parts people can only function with a keyboard in front of them. Good to see you at work!!
Great video, great information. I have a 41 sedanet with similar starting issues but without the chattering sound and only the solinoid “click” sound and some humming sound. Battery is at 5.36-5.40 V grounds and connections look good and clean. Could it also be possible that starter needs to be rebuilt? Thanks
@@TheJayhawker got starter rebuilt, battery charged up, car started like a champ, drove for about 4 miles parked it when I went to move it, nothing but click, click. I got 6 volts going into vacuum starter switch on carb nothing coming out the other terminal. When I jump the vacuum terminals just click click, any ideas?
@@fabiandiemidio63 The click happens when the solenoid disc snaps into contact with the terminals. If the car doesn't crank then, and the starter is known to be good, not enough current is passing through the solenoid to enable the starter to crank. If there's enough current to start with,(that is, if the battery and cables afre delivering it to the solenoid) the problem is likely pitted contacts inside the solenoid. This situation is easy to fix, especially on these solenoids. If you're at all handy at things mechanical, it'll be duck soup for you. Remove the solenoid from the starter, then the front bakelite or plastic cover and the plunger exposed when it's removed. Turn the contact (big) bolts 180 degrees within the cover, one at a time, like The Jayhawker showed, flip the disc over (by compressing the spring, removing the retainer washer, and turning the disc over), then "reverse procedure to install." Go ahead - it'll be fun!
