I'm always impressed by how much Chris actually knows. A lot of CEOs are fairly clueless about the technologies their companies create. They know the key selling points, the trouble areas, but mostly just focus on the financials. Chris, could easily be the chief engineer with all of his knowledge about that car. Definitely impressive.

Even as just an investor and LE reservation holder I feel a part of the Aptera team with all the insight into what they are doing. I wish that I could have gotten my Aptera a couple of years ago, but then it would not have been nearly refined as what we will see next year. Aptera will truly be the best EV on the road!

You'll be with them right up to the point they fold having never delivered a vehicle. Did you listen to what he said? They don't have suppliers for the PI builds, they have candidate suppliers from all over the globe but none are actually supplying anything. They have an inexperienced team (he actually admitted that). This company will never, ever, produce this vehicle and even if they did it would never make a profit.

Another question I would like to see answered is build quality. For example wind and road noise. Should we expect a luxury quiet feel like Lexus, BMW or Genesis? Or will it be more like a Corolla, Civic or Elantra? It's my understanding that due to its shape wind noise is minimal but what about road noise? How insulated is the cabin? I can't wait until people outside of the company get to test drive the vehicle so they can give us the good and the bad. Carwow and Throttle House are 2 of my favorite channels to watch. I am hoping, keeping my fingers crossed that Aptera reaches out to them and lets them give us an honest review of the vehicle.

I live in New York, but I plan to go to California to pick this up when it's available. Because to me, this EV represents freedom from oil and the large auto makers. Aptera is a company that believes in rate to repair. A very rare situation. Plus in general solar will probably satisfy my charging needs most of the time except for road trips, and even most of my road trips are shorter than the capacity. I'm ordering the 600 mile version so I can maintain proper battery charging, use heat or air conditioning when needed and account for cold weather losses.

Building anything new takes a long time. Time is money. VW took years to build VW Buzz and get it here to the States. It doesn't even like the original Buzz. Give them a chance to do it right the first time. If you work in an industry that makes goods for people. You would know the hardships it takes to make new things. My job can take two to three years to redesign one part. Aptera is going great, and we need to be patient. Thanks for the information you got.
@billsmith5960
@billsmith5960 Месяц назад
It's taken years for Aptera to do what they are doing. Started around 2006 and that failed. Started again with a similar vehicle in 2019 and here we are 5 years later. I fully understand it takes time but please, do not hold a carrot out in front of the crowdfunding crowd as it would be next year, on;y to give people hope that they will get their prize within the year. Aptera (like many other startups) are guilty of this. At least VW didn't ask people for money years ago. They just teased us with prototypes. So, they just lived rent free in your brain all of those years.
@madmotorcyclist
@madmotorcyclist Месяц назад
@@billsmith5960 The earlier failure was exacerbated because of lost of management control and the recession (which resulted in a lot more startup failures than Aptera). A new model takes automakers typically anywhere from 5 to 7 years to make and they have billions of dollars and much manufacturing structure. So the 2019 startup is not really that far behind given much smaller startup funding. At least they aren't burning through investor funding like several other EV startups that have failed or about to fail.
@billsmith5960
@billsmith5960 Месяц назад
@@madmotorcyclist - Yes they lost control but in the end, same two guys with a similar product. Yes they are not burning through as much money and it shows in the lack of progress. It's a much too common cycle.
@madmotorcyclist
@madmotorcyclist Месяц назад
You still haven't disputed my point. Automakers even with billions of dollars and manufacturing facilities and suppliers already lined up take 5 to 7 years to make a new model. Aptera's timeline is not that much longer so far given the fact that they essentially started from scratch.

They alluded to the reasons why they had to go abroad-basically it’s not an option. The composite body and in-wheel hub motor manufacturing are simply unavailable in the US. You'd need Space X government contracts for that. I was doing a project which required some cnc machined prototyped parts, and the shop we released files to ended up using a supplier in China to cnc machine them because it was cheaper to air ship parts rather than find someone local. I agree everything should be local if possible, but for profit businesses will look to their bottom line to save money, especially when there's significant savings for low volume production parts, even if it seems ridiculous to have parts travel thousands of miles.

There were a couple of confusing statements here. Long-term, I understand that they will die cast aluminum parts, and those tools typically take more than 3 months to complete. Short-term, Chris mentioned sand casting and CNC machining, making it sound like it was one or the other. There are 3D printed sand casting molds for prototyping, but they definitely need to be CNC machined afterwards since sand cast parts are pretty rough. I recently went through this exercise and found that going directly to CNC machining produces a better part at the same or lower price, IF you can find a billet of aluminum big enough. The good news is that die cast parts are very accurate and inexpensive. I was also glad to hear they are welding the frame. The CAD models show what look like large rivets attaching the extrusions to the cast parts. I was concerned about those loosening over time.
@RomanChaar
@RomanChaar Месяц назад
So their CAD models publicly posted are not the latest ones?
@maj429
@maj429 Месяц назад
Sand casting can save money in the long run especially if you have a part that only needs tolerances in a few key areas like bolt shoulder faces. For structural runs like beams and bracket rear faces that don't need to mate to another part, sand casting can provide an end use surface finish that does not require additional machining, saving cost due to less waste material and waste machining time. Machining down full billet make sense for high tolerance smaller parts, but does not make sense for larger parts with only a few toleranced faces. Only machine what you need to, and cast the rest.

I appreciate the admission that CPC's model did not agree with Aptera's and that is why they wanted to test Beta. A discrepancy does not mean either model was wrong, it could just mean they were both off by a margin of error that added up. But they would want to fully understand the variables involved so they could figure out what caused the inconsistency. I'm also glad to hear it confirmed that Gamma was not as useful for testing as Beta because it was designed for a body structure that is now obsolete. Gamma was tested, but CPC wanted to go back to the source. I also liked clarification of CTNS's role. They aren't building any production battery packs, that will apparently be in the hands of Aptera, using the purchased robots. The PI battery packs are just being made locally for the PI builds only. Still unsure when CTNS intends to produce a few battery packs as part of their validation and what they will be used for, but that doesn't seem to be an issue.

Darn, deleted my battery comment by mistake. Regardless, your pithy reply was not useful Steve. What was not made clear and this is possibly from editing is that it was suggested they are buying this laser welding equipment locally while also sourcing a full setup from CTNS. So my question is why this expenditure for the equipment they do not need long term or do they expect the CTNS factory to come much later.

Money, money, and more money. Aptera lacks capital, so it takes a lot longer to get things done. They only have enough to build 3 PIs let alone the 16 they need. What’s most concerning to me is the lack of funding. It’s going to be June 2024 with not a single PI built let alone validated.

The very idea that they would pause production to move the CTNS equipment is incredibly dumb. No one in their right mind pauses production over an event that can be mitigated let alone one so important to achieving production goals. They truly need a month's supply of packs on hand to insure there is no outage because payroll and accounts payable do not stop. I am going to chalk this one up to Chris not being prepared for the question. Just do the math in your head. This has to be down at most during ramp up but Chris has stated ramp up will happen quickly. Well one line full ramp is two hundred packs. Air freighting the equipment is not instantaneous as given the nature of the equipment the packing and movement to the airport is very involved and that is nothing compared to getting it situated and certified for production in Carlsbad.
