Thank you so much for this series of videos. I followed everything to a T and, after 5.5 hours, I was able to successfully change my water pump and timing belt. Almost had a catastrophe however. When turning the camshaft sprocket to get tension between the driver side cam sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket, it spun a complete 90 degrees on me. I fixed it and continued working knowing I very well could have bent a valve. Thankfully, the car started right up and there are no issues so I think i got lucky today but its done for another 100K miles.

@@MotorCityMechanic good evening MCM. It's been 8 motnhs since I did this job and I notice at idle my.rngine stutters slightly. I checked the marks and the passenger timing mark is maybe half a tooth off. Would this cause my stutter?

MCM - I appreciate all of the time you put into this. I maintain a 2010 Charger 3.5 V6 for my stepson. 102K miles. Runs great. Has been well maintained. Car seems to use oil. Admittedly, I need to pull spark plugs and look there first. Never see any smoke out tail pipe or external leaks. Is this engine prone to valve stem seal leakage? Thanks for your time.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 лет назад
Oil usage isnt common. First step.....replace the pcv valve. Then monitor. Otherwise nothing common for this concern. Thanks for the time you spent watching the video. The kind words were appreciated as well. Make sure to subscribe and watch my other videos as well.

Hey, Motor City Mechanic! Had the wonderful brittle fan blade problem, it ate up the radiator. 2006 Chrysler 300. They said gauge didn't say it was hot. But it was very hot and no coolant in vehicle (leaked out of all the holes in the radiator). I replaced radiator and fan assembly and coolant. Took it for a spin. Temp gauge was in between Cold and Hot. But it was very hot and coolant leaked out (front of engine) I assume it is the water pump. So I will be using these videos! Thank you. All your videos are awesome. I don't understand the temp gauge it never did read hot. Thanks again. Semper Fi

Thanks for keeping up with the videos. Sounds like you still have a coolant leak. I saw recently that your local auto parts store such as Advance Auto or Autozone have a loaner tool program that includes a coolant pressure tester so you can use it and try to isolate the location of the leak. If you do replace the waterpump....take your time and follow each step and you shouldnt have no issues. The main item is to make sure the timing marks are lined up properly.

Quick question. When I was opening the rad drain I was pulling- maybe too forceful and pulled it out of the bottom. Is it reuseable at this point I or is there just a replacement one I should purchase? Thanks again.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 лет назад
+Scott McAdam what you need to do is look inside the radiator hole that the drain came out of......there needs to be 2 square tabs in the opening thematic the drain plug thread down onto.....if they are gone then you will need to replace the radiator. If they are there then make sure the o-ring is still okay on the drain and reinstall after adding some grease/lube to help it go back in

I have a 2007 3.5 magnum with 52k miles, Car is running great. Since It is 9 years old should I think about replacing the timing belt? Do the belts get brittle/stiff with time? Im also driving back home 1200 miles/2day trip for the holidays, is that alone enough to recommend changing it? Thanks in advance
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 лет назад
The service info doesnt show any time related items. The owners manual may show it being that its the oldest version and what I am looking at my have been revised. When it comes to that belt and that fact that some damage can be done if it breaks then it may be about time to replace it. Its almost 10 years old when you think about it. I would probably start setting a few bucks aside and think about getting it done. It doesnt have to be done today but sometime in the near future. Thanks for the question and for finding the channel. Thanks for the Reply. Your series makes it look like a pretty straight forward job. I called around and most shops are asking for $850-1000, but I found a website called "your mechanic" that would be like $550. Is this a job that can be done in a driveway with the right tools? Is the timing belt replacement to this car much different from other cars, or should a mechanic with a few years of experience be able to tackle it pretty easy.
@MotorCityMechanic

+Keyv N It really depends on your abilities. You and only you know that. If your good around cars then you should do fine. You need to know how to pull the crank pulley off for example. A lot have watched the video and done well.

@MotorCityMechanic

+doug drefus It will be harder than the 300 for sure.....a lot of the issue is just getting everything off the front of the engine so that you have access. Once you get those items off....its really not that bad.

Another question on the 3.5 timing belt if you don't mind. I have a soft copy of the 2006 Factory Service Manual. Page 6250 discusses timing belt for EGG motor or 3.5. At the front of this section it says: "CAUTION: The 3.5L is NOT a freewheeling engine. Therefore, loosen the valve train rocker assemblies before servicing the timing drive". Seems there is concern about cam/crankshaft movement during this task. Do I really need to do this. I've done timing belts on other interference engines and never did this. The vehicle I would be servicing is a 2010 Charger with the 3.5 motor. Thanks for your time.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 лет назад
I see no reason to do this. In theory if you line everything up before removing the belt, then when you go to reinstall the new belt....it will be close enought that you wont have issues. If the belt is broke then yes you will have possible damage but doing a replacement I see no issues. Thanks for the question Mike!

@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 лет назад
+3232myke They had a lot of sludge issues when they first came out and timing chain tensioner problems as well. That's what put a bad taste in my mouth. The later versions seemed to hold up fine. as far as the wanting to stall.....first thing I would do is clean the throttle body and then disconnect the battery and hold the cables together for about 2 minutes to reset all the values.

i recently had my dodge chrysler 300 3.5l v6 engine break down it had a radiator problem for a while but my mechanic gave me excuses on when he would fix it finally got it fixed and he said that the head gaskets were blown that the car would still run but only certain amount of time (he estimated 20-25 min) which i felt was less , granted this vehicle was our only transportation due to the loss of our other car in the flood a few months back , finally to my point the car as i was driving home from work (i work a few min from home) and i made this turn and it felt as if the car gave a push and then battery light came on as soon as i tried to turn to pull over the car shut off. It wont completely start but tries to rev up , was wondering if you have a video of replacing head gaskets ..

I currently dont have a video on that engine for the headgaskets. I recommend subscribing so that when videos such as that get uploaded.....you will be notified. Sorry about the issues. The cutting off and the overheating may be related and then again maybe not. Having it checked for codes found be important.

@ponyporker9991
@ponyporker9991 8 лет назад
Let me just start off by saying I am not mechanically inclined to say the least. I've been having a really bad issue with my 2006 Dodge Charger 3.5L V6 with overheating. I brought my car into my local mechanics when I noticed my temperature gauge go all the way hot. He said he would pressurize the system to check for any leaks and if there were he would replace the part. So I go to pick my car up later that day and he said it was a hose leading from the radiator to the thermostat and that he replaced the hose as well as the thermostat while he was down there and handed me a bill of around $200. He said I was all set and I went on my way. Not 1 day later my car overheats again. So I bring it back to him and he does a test on the heads to see if I have a blown head gasket. He calls me later that day to say I do indeed have a blown head gasket and recommends that I get both heads resurfaced as well as a head gasket kit for both heads. and to do the timing belt and the water pump. I said fine. So after having my car for 2 weeks I go to pick it up and pay the $1500 bill. I get in my car and start it up and the check engine light comes on. Giving off a random/multiple miss fire code. P0300 if I'm not mistaken. He said to drive it around for a while and to bring it back to him if it didn't go away. So I did and it didn't. So I brought it back to him and explained to him that the car drives great but for some reason when I'm idling there is a nasty shake the engine. He said it's most likely a leak and that he would smoke the engine and find the leak and replace the piece. So I said ok and he did. after smoking the engine he said it was coming from where the EGR tube meets the back of the air intake. So he siliconed the shit out of it to seal the leak and sent me on my way. Low and behold the check engine light came back on giving the same code. So before I brought it back to him I had a second mechanic take a look at it. He said that the timing belt might be off a tooth causing it to miss fire. And no shit wouldn't you have it the fucking thing starts overheating again right there. So I get towed to his shop and he said he had it running all day and it never overheated on him. I get the car back and bam it starts overheating again and the top hose going from the radiator to the engine is hot and the bottom hose going from the radiator to the thermostat is ice cold meaning the thermostat isn't opening. But the thermostat only goes in one way and its brand new. So please can I get some advice on what I should do next because I can't afford to put anymore money into this thing.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 лет назад
Sorry about the delay. One possible cause for a hot radiator hose and a cold radiator hose is an actual clogged radiator. Hard to say if the thermostat is the issue or the way it was installed. Thats pretty much the 2 main causes. It sure does sound liek you have had alot of issues. Not sure why he siliconed the egr tube when all you have to do is replace the seal. It sounds like the first mechanic, how can I say this.....wasnt the best person for the job.
@ponyporker9991
@ponyporker9991 8 лет назад
+MotorCity Mechanic Thanks alot for the reply. I actually just got done changing out the radiator on it MYSELF thanks to your radiator removal guide. That doesn't seem to have been the problem though since it overheated again. I'll be calling my local Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram dealership tomorrow morning to schedule an appointment to have the car tested to find out EXACTLY what is wrong with it. Just out of curiosity. Where is the shop you are located at? Because hell, I wouldn't mind taking my car a great distance if I know the work is going to be quality.

@MotorCityMechanic 8 лет назад
Actually I am located just outside of Augusta Ga. Not too sure how far away that is from you.
@ponyporker9991
@ponyporker9991 8 лет назад
So all this time later the job was redone by the same mechanic who actually got the machine shop that resurfaced the heads to admit that they did a bad valve job which explained why it was running like crap and giving a misfire code and also why it was overheating. I've had the car back for almost a week now and it is running great.

@MotorCityMechanic

+Vicente Nunez The only way the timing belt can affect performance would be if the belt jumped a few teeth. This can happen if the waterpump starts to leak. Otherwise I would have it checked for codes. As long as the vehicle didn't have power before the spark plugs were replaced then I would rule out that repair being the cause....so, was there a difference in power before the spark plugs were replaced?

+D dart You can use what ever you wish. Air operated tools help speed up the process but aren't required. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe

How can i put my 3.5 engine back on time after timing belts snaps
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 лет назад
Depending on the year of the vehicle.....if the belt broke then you more then likely bent some valves. At that point one or both heads will need to come off to have them replaced. A cylinder leak down test will say for sure if the valves are bent and also which ones. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

Sorry but the 2.7 is a chain driven engine. Two completely different engines. Nothing will be the same. Thanks for the question

+D dart I fully understand, I just don't want the belt to break and cost you even more when it bends the valves.

how would iknoe if its water pump leaking?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 лет назад
+Mariposa Velazquez I recommend using a coolant pressure tester and seeing if you see any coolant leaking out anywhere. A good visual inspection will go a long ways in determining if you have a leak. That includes looking for a crust buildup as well at a leak location. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

My engine is making noise I can’t tell if it’s the water pump or the alternator
