Thank you so much for these videos and the details you include. I swapped the oil pump in my Jeep JK this weekend and saved over $700 by doing it myself. It took 8 hours and I filmed the entire thing to hopefully help some other Jeep guys that have this issue.

Awesome! Nothing like saving money, especially when its that much. It would be so much nicer if the aluminum pan didnt have to be removed but its whats needed on that vehicle. Thanks for commenting and make sure to subscribe.

Hey David, that was a good video. One thing that helps with rusted bolts in addition to a penetrating catalyst is cleaning the threads with a wire wheel/brush before taking them off. I would like to install an auxiliary oil pump to build up oil pressure and lube the engine before starting after the jeep has been in the garage for several months. This seems to be an unheard of concept in the automotive world. Do you have any comments or suggestions?

My last car was 24 years old (94 buick regal gs) before I drove her to the dismantlers. And generous ppl like you made it so I could keep her running without ever having to go to a shop. Idk if I'll get 24 years out of my 2016 300 or a scat lol but i know I'll get a the most I can if I follow great videos like yours man.

I just did this on my 2013 Wrangler. I did not have to remove the lower stamped oil pan. This is because all the bolts for the longitudinal mounted engines are external. There were no inside bolts to undo, therefore the lower metal stamped oil pan did not have to be removed. Instead of replacing the oil pump I was able to find the solenoid at Summit Racing. Part number is J53001. Cost under $40.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 4 года назад
Glad it went well. For me.....its could be the solenoid or the pump and I rather not do it twice. But if its your vehicle and the only difference is time then I can fully understand. Thanks for reaching out and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe.

Great videos, question what is your opinion on the duel displacement oil pump system? I am old school and do not like watching my oil pressure drop when the engine warms up just to save a little gas. Me I want the engine to last forever. I have heard of people disabling this feature to maintain full pressure during the full operating temperature range. would love to hear your opinion. Thank you
@kipamore
@kipamore 6 лет назад
Great stuff as always, David. I wondered why/how you diagnosed the oil pump, and saw your comment earlier. Weak solenoid in the oil pump. I'm wondering: what code will the engine throw when this happens? Or, if I follow your oil pressure gauge video from a few months back, what are the specs on a healthy oil pump. That said, I have two 2014 Promasters, 350,000 and 375,000 miles on them, and neither one burns a drop of oil. I use Penzoil Platinum synthetic because it meets the MS spec, and that's what the engine was built with, and it's $24 for 5 qts at Wally World. Is it possible the pump problems are caused by dingdongs not using the right oil? One last tip: the PN for the oil pump is 68252670AB, and common to a 2012 minivan and a 2014 Promaster. This tells me that it's probably the same pump for every 2011 and up Pentastar. The lower (steel) oil pan is specific for the Promaster, but I'm using one from a Journey and it's close enough as makes no difference .
@rustystick
@rustystick 3 года назад
On the promasters, there seems to be an oiling issue on the top end. We are seeing signs of poor oil pressure

I own a 2014 RAM 1500 Tradesman 2WD (3.6 lt). It has a stock ride height with 20” wheels & 33” tires. About two months ago I was almost struck by a vehicle next to me, I swerved to avoid them. In doing so my front passenger side tire struck the curb at 40mph bending the rim and deflating the tire. I replaced all four rims and tires and got an alignment because it severely pulled to the right after the accident. I have a “lifetime alignment” at Firestone so it does not cost a thing to take it in and have the truck aligned as much as I want. Since the incident I’ve had two additional alignments because it will pull to one side within days of being aligned. I’ve gone to 3 different locations to have each alignment done with each technician saying “the issue was fixed”. But still I drive a vehicle that pulls to one side. Do I need to replace my entire suspension components in the front passenger side to fix this issue? What are some major things to look for in the suspension components? I don’t seem to see any immediate bends, breaks, or separation of components. What suspension components could be causing the camber, caster, and tow to all be out of whack within days of an alignment?

For a rear-wheel drive vehicle, like a 11' Dodge charger SE, will the rack and pinion have to be removed/moved to take off the upper oil pan? As always, thank you for what you do.
@MotorCityMechanic

It has to be unbolts and the coupler removed. Then you just reposition it let it hang there down out of the way but still attached to the outer tie rod ends and hubs.

Is there much difference with the AWD models? Or is the answer just to pull the engine?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 лет назад
Awd vehicles such as Chargers, 300s, and Challengers have a solid one piece aluminum oil pan. Those vehicles require unbolting the rack and pinion and lifting the rear of the trans to get to all the needed bolts. The axle has to be removed as well. Alot more steps for sure.

Dave I have a question I'm leaving for Germany for 3yrs and I ha EA 2017 Cummins how do I properly store it and what can I do for prevention
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 лет назад
Thats a great question and something I never have to deal with. I just looked at the owners manual and the only thing they recommended as disconnecting the battery. Otherwise there isnt much more I can add to that based on my experience. 3 years is alot so it pretty much exceeds the typical time I have seen anything mentioned about in the documentation.

I own a 2013 Dodge Avenger SE with the 3.6L for my daughter. How reliable is this engine because I've heard mixed reviews
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 лет назад
They can have some issues. The 2014 coolers leak oil and needed replacing....it being a 2013 you okay. otherwise a possible rocker arm issue from time to time or coil boot with burnt hole. Its not on my "hate" list such as the 2.7 was. The 3.6 to me is a good engine. I personally prefer the 5.7 when possible but of course the Avenger never came that way. I say follow the scheduled maintenance and keep up with the oil changes like you should.

So how often does an oil pump go bad on these pentastar engines and how would you know? I figure that by the time one realized there was no oil pressure, the engine might be ruined.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 лет назад
It happens. Had 2 in the shop for that repair in the last 2 weeks. It’s never a no oil pressure issue which would cause damage. It’s causes a check engine light and a code to set. The solenoid on the pump fails and then it doesn’t have precise control over the oil pressure needed for the variable valve timing. Otherwise it won’t cause damage but can affect driveability. Thanks for watching and for the comment

What would be the downside if a person disconnected the wires going to the oil pump solenoid on the 3.6 Pentastar engine? Wouldn't that give more oil to the lifters and rocker arms that so often fail!
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 4 года назад
It would go into a "limp" mode and not have power. You would notice a change and it wouldnt be for the better lol.
@dale797
@dale797 4 года назад
How can a guy configure it so that the oil pump will stay in high gear? I put on an oil gauge and it runs down the road at about 30 lbs pressure. Evidently that isn't enough to supply enough oil to the lifters and rockers so that they last and last!
@dale797
@dale797 4 года назад
Thanks for your reply! So then could I disconnect the wires going to the oil pump solenoid and put a connector to connect them together? If not, how much resistance would the solenoid give to these wires? Thanks in advance for your answer and I really want to correct the rocker arm problem in this 3.6 engine!

@TheRjacob82 4 года назад
What about the Durango makes it another story? I believe I have to replace my pump due to The po6dd code and already replaced the sensor. Looking at the pan it appears I have to pull down the whole unit. I have about 2 inch gap between the rack and Pinion and pan, is that enough? The pan also looks to be attached to the bell housing, those bolts need to be removed as well, correct?
