Part 1: Austin Allegro V6 street sleeper project // Jonny Smith

This video has been one that many of you have asked about. Jonny started this project of taking a hated 1970s British Austin Allegro and making it perform, handle and stop like a modern-ish hatchback back in 2007. The 1977 Allegro was found minutes where he grew up in Somerset and is a rarer 2 door model in fetching Antique Gold (one of many vile British Leyland hues).
This is episode one of a mini series, where Jonny's car goes off to the team at Midland Performance and Retro in Shropshire ( www.midlandperformance.co.uk/ ) to be finally finished as he intended. The Allegro's drivetrain has been taken from a 1993 Rover 827 Si donor car, which has a Honda-derived 2.7-litre 24v V6 and a manual 5-speed gearbox.
The aim of a sleeper is to not give the game away as to its performance and capability. As such the 'All Agro' will retain as much original 48k-from-new paint as possible. The suspension is now adjustable coilovers and brakes are Golf GTi front discs, with 14-inch steel wheels from a VW Polo (to mimic the originals in form). These areas are yet to be completed, as is the wiring (stand alone ECU from Specialist Components www.specialist-components.co.uk/ ), supercharger (Eaton M62 from a salvage Mercedes SLK Kompressor) and boot mounted cooling system.
Wanted:
-Electric cooling fans, radiator and hoses.
-Strut braces for torsional rigidity.
-Disc brakes for front and rear, plus hoses, servo and master cylinder.
-Induction air system and plumbing/mounting for supercharger
-Limited slip differential
Follow future episodes where the Allegro receives a detailed transformation from dowdy OAP chariot into a 200+bhp supercharged V6 driver's car.

Blows my mind how random this channel is. Fantastic job Jonny.

The word random has been hijacked by the youth of today and is so overused as to be meaningless. If you mean that the content of this channel is random, (meaning it occurs without definite aim, reason, or pattern), then I'd have to disagree. It is rather an eclectic mix however.

My dad was given a harvest gold Allegro as a company car in 1977. He nicknamed it 'Allagro' due to the amount of time it subsequently spent in the garage being repaired. Having said that, I'm really excited to see the outcome of this project. It's a bit bonkers Jonny, but brilliant!

Now when I were a lad, me and my mate Dave dreamed of a project like this, a "Q" car (so-named because during the war, there were things called "Q" ships that were merchant ships with hidden guns and stuff). My Austin A40 Devon was considered, we would use all BMC mechanicals, a Healey 3000 engine and gearbox, suspension etc. for example, but the car had 4 doors so that went nowhere. A Morris Minor with MGB or C running gear, was another idea, but sadly life interfered and none of these happened.... Good luck with this project, it is exactly what I would have done.

Sounds like the usual my auntie or my friend etc had type of bullshit. We had two Allegros in the family at the same time and they were excellent and very reliable cars and nothing ever fell off of them and I know from the way the roof lining was put on on these cars there was no way it could fall off.

@@williamwoods8022 I can't tell if you're being serious or not. British Leyland, although the actual tech was quite impressive, certainly made some "friday afternoon" cars. The concept of hydrolastic is actually really clever, for example, but there is a reason it didn't catch on - it's not the most reliable. (I've literally just spent a year on my '92 metro GTi fiddling away with it) On the subject of head linings, I've never owned an allegro but I can only assume by that stage they were put in in a similar fashion to Range Rovers, which, at least in New Zealand, are notorious for dropping. I'm not saying Leyland cars suck, they don't.... well most. Some did actively try to kill you. But some of them certainly weren't put together quite as well, so saying as a blanket statement that nothing ever falls off is plain old wrong... happens with every older car, not just British. The exhaust fell off an old Swift I used to own one day, completely by itself.

I used to borrow my fathers yellow 1500cc (?) estate to go to college and out with friends in the evening. My classmates would take the piss, about how uncool and slow it was. When I said that it would comfortably do 90 fully loaded no one believed me until one day I was unlucky (stupid) enough to get pulled for speeding, fully loaded, late at night, doing 93mph on the M27. I bet a couple of classmates £5 each that my grandpamobile would do over 90 and I could prove it and they took the bait. I then pulled out my speeding ticket and won the bet and helped pay my £30 fine.

@@recruitmentch Allegro in this sense is taken from the musical definition meaning 'With Brisk Pace' so I think it's fitting.

Always wanted to do this with my first car - a MKIV Cortina. Great video inspiring thoughts of new lockdown activity!

What a project - I watch with interest. We've all got Allegro stories. Here's mine. When I was at college (hair ago) one of my mates parents had one. And yes, it was Brown. They weren't car people (obviously) and they didn't bother locking it - though in those days you didn't need much to bypass locks. Anyway., one night the car went missing. The police found it on the other side of town a couple of days later. Completely unmolested. They thought someone had just used it to 'get home' after a night out. The car lasted for years and gave simple trouble free motoring. It eventually met its doom in Germany - after English confusion at a German junction resulted in an accident. Luckily no-one was hurt but it was the end of the Brown Allegro. Fond memories of happy days.

A true sleeper, and i love that engine, they are solid, our family had the same 2.7 rover and we towed a twin wheeled overloaded caravan at 80 to 100 miles a hour round europe on some parts faultlessly for 6 yrs and with 280,000 plus miles plus it was the gearbox repair that killed it even tho it looked like a well worn slipper, and felt like one,i cant wait for this..........

This is an awesome project, and I appreciate your mission for it. A lot of stuff you see on RU-vid gets super out of hand with uber fancy parts and fabrication.

Forgot to say that perhaps the format of a show it " shows off " how knowledgeable you are because you have to appear in a certain way . Am I right , wrong who knows ?

That's like a more extreme version of a project I had. A 1.1 K-series Metro with a KV6 engine. Had it half done but ended up selling it for another project. I've never actually seen anyone with the balls to do an Allegro though! Topstuff

When I used to work in the pottery industry, there was a trim colour called 'old gold' that was used when they didn't want the brightness of burnished gilt on porcelain and needed a more antique look. It was pretty much the same colour as your Allegro. Can't wait to see the next stage.

Awesome, I can't wait to see how this evolves. Doing this build since 2007, that a bit of time. I hope it can move along and get proper done before 2030 :)

What an epic build this is... I’m feeling all nostalgic now. My parents had a Morris Marina....a mauve/maroon Morris Marina, that forever more smelt of (us) children’s travel sick.. Ahh, memories

As I was watching this, my dad came into the Room and pointed at the screen and told me he had one of these (he wasn’t sure on the model year though). He said he loved the car, but the engine was atrocious. Nice to see some love going into an under appreciated car.

Owned a ‘78 Mk ll and ‘81Mklll estate ( because I liked the rear window styling😎)back in the eighties. Put a 1750 Maxi engine with a Princess radiator, 1500 driveshafts and engine mounts into Mklll. Later on modified it with a sharper camshaft and two custom made Double Weber carburettors ! Showed A Golf GTI Mkl saw my taillights at the stoplights, and seriously never had any troubles whith these cars!!👍👍👍. Keep up the good Work and greetings from the Netherlands.
