Thanks...it's a lot of work, but I have fun with it. Just do a little bit every day...and sometimes a lot! But it's in all good fun. Thanks for watching!
New subscriber here. Just purchased a pulk sled for winter backpacking on the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. I have a few questions. 1. How difficult is it to haul 60 pounds of gear up the side of a mountain? 2. When descending a mountain, does the sled tend to get out in front of you? 3. The AT in Pennsylvania is very rocky. Can you use a pulk sled when the surface under the sled is only partially covered with snow? I mean that on the AT all the rocks may not be totally covered with snow. I'm wondering if the sled will work under those conditions.
So, this can be a tough one. The pulk will treat you well for sure. The 60 lbs will not likely be your problem as long as you have a nice harness setup. The harness can make or break your experience. What sled did you buy? Something narrow and long will help with keeping the weight distributed, but short and wide will help with turning. Just depends on your terrain. I found mine is a sweet spot...fits nicely through most areas.
I found the sled didn't go past me with the rigid poles...I sort of hold onto them like handles and it keeps the sled where I need it on descents. The bare rock will be tough, but I am in the Whites which are notoriously difficult terrain. You need to select trails that have better coverage. I suggest starting on snowmobile trails to get your sled dialed in as well as your system.
You will want a rope attached to be able to pull your sled up super step inclines or hand it off to a buddy to help you navigate. Get a quality long rope...like 50-100 feet. I think I had a 100 footer on my kit...I forget. But it saved my butt a number of times.
Didn’t realize you were close to New England. We just did a pulk trip to the same place in Lincoln. Check it out if you get some time. It’s our most recent video.
Hells ya! I watched your video just before my trip. Is your sled the Jet 1? I built mine around the Jet Jr...which is narrower than the 1. I got lucky because it fit perfectly in the tracks...that place turns to a highway! Where was your camp site? Ours was north of the Falls by about half a mile or so...maybe less than that.
You're speaking my language...so true! My friends all got soft....we were awesome for outdoor stuff as kids and growing up. Now everyone has excuses...yet they say they would go...ya ya ya, sure....I haven't seen it yet!
