Such hive is just for a small family. Normal family is 50000-80000 bees and they need a volume around 100 L. An entrance - like a small hole will be a huge problems for coming in and out bees and it's not enough for ventilation of a inner volume of a hive.

Awesome explainations! Thank you! Does the box design have to be a box rectangular wood, or could other shapes and materials be used?

Good presentation!! What are your thoughts on the plastic dividers with a large hole in the middle to allow room for brood as an alternative to the anti slumping bars? I have found a Native bee hive in a friends wall that I'm planning on trying to duplicate. Never had anything to do with natives, do you have any tips??

How does the brood excluder stop the bees from laying eggs in the honey super?
@davidgrowsdragonfruit5301
@davidgrowsdragonfruit5301 4 года назад
As I understand it, the brood grows upwards as a large cylinder or ball of eggs and won't go through a small off centre opening.

Great and informative videos. Can I ask a question? I have a two-tier hive that is thriving and have built a new three tier hive as described with a spare brood box to add to the existing hive when split. Now I have a dilemma, how do I now get the brood from the top of the existing hive to move into the middle brood box? I’ve nailed the plastic divider in place, but screwed the slump bars.

Interesting watch. I may sound naive but do the Bees just turn up "if you build it they'll come" style or do you need to source a queen from somewhere and put it the hive. I am in a semi-urban estate with a large back yard and would like to give it a try for a bit of a hobby. thank you

You just need to get a plastic bottle and put some pheromones in it and leave it as a "bait" for a new hive then you transplant it into the permanent wooden hive by cutting the bottle and carefully placing the disk parts of the hive into the wooden box.
@jazzycool2950
@jazzycool2950 5 лет назад
Arthur Rangel where does one get pheromones for the plastic bottle?
@brucelaidlaw
@brucelaidlaw 5 лет назад
No, I don't think there's any record of native bees coming into an empty box. You can buy a full hive, and then, a year later, split it into 2 hives.

Looks like colorbond 'rolltop'ridgecapping which has been bent a little on each edge to grip the hive

thanks that was a informative session thanks do native hives get attacked the same way as the honey bee hive by the beetle?
@bobfitz6358
@bobfitz6358 5 лет назад
No thats one reason why keeping these Stingless bees is that there is no enemies of them like varroa or SHB Small Hive Beetle. So the cost of keeping them is minimal,just the wood work. But the honey is only 500g per year.
@michaelnkanda3561

does the honey in the supper not fall down when you lift it in order to extract the honey. thanks
@glennhughchris
@glennhughchris 5 лет назад
No it is in a honeycomb. You need to puncture the comb with a small bed of nails and the honey will start to flow out.
@BreaksFast
@BreaksFast 5 лет назад
@@glennhughchris Australian bees don't construct honeycomb. wtf are you talking about?
@davidgrowsdragonfruit5301
@davidgrowsdragonfruit5301 4 года назад
@@BreaksFast they construct a bunch of 'honeypots' all joined together out of propolis which is a combination of wax and tree resin. I'm sorry it isn't a perfect sheet of regular hexagons like european bees, but c'mon mate its bloody well close enough to honeycomb

I’m curious, there are so many places to find the OATH hive and its variations. How come getting an Australis hive design is nearly impossible. It a shame. A love Austroplebea species.
@BreaksFast
@BreaksFast 5 лет назад
"How come getting an Australis hive design is nearly impossible." Probably because Australian bees don't make much honey, so there's no commercial incentive to sell homes for them.
