From memory the 35mm AHEAD Ammunition had 152 tungsten projectiles per round.. But also from what i recall war thunder thinks there's 15.2 judging by their effectiveness XD

Certain anti-air missiles use a warhead with a cluster of metal rods welded together end-to-end to achieve a similar effect. The warhead explodes as its passing alongside the target aircraft, and the explosive forces the metal rods to fly apart and bend into a rapidly expanding halo shape that cuts clean through anything it hits. Eventually the halo breaks apart into shrapnel that can also cause damage. It's a really cool concept.

Basically a Nuh uh to all reconnaissance and non reconnaissance drones. This may be a stupid question, but can it be used against fighter jets? That looks deadly as heck. Also, nice simulation, loved it.
@aniviamain309

If theyre low and close enough it definitively could be used against them
@cykacat4196
@cykacat4196 Год назад
it would work nice i think, but the porblem is actually hitting it. Fighter jets fly to fast and high for guns to be viable. There are some gun AA's but the bullets explode before impact creating the same effect.
@IrishCaesar
@IrishCaesar Год назад
With proper radar or tv guidance this could hit anything in the air. Jets are hard though because they're so fast and tend to fly very high

What I think is cool about this is you could make the projectiles aerodynamic and release quickly after firing as to create a spread of projectiles that can still fly with good ballistics for some distance, removing the need for complicated fues
@quantuman100
@quantuman100 Год назад
No, the velocity would drop instantly, in fact they need one of the most complicated fuse setups we have ever developed, as the speed of the round is measured and the fuse time set via magnetic induction at the end of the barrel.
@moustrout1299
@moustrout1299 Год назад
@@quantuman100 I believe the comment is implying that if we make each piece arrowdynamic such as all the fragmentation are small darts released in the same orientation then they would be able to create a shotgun like effect and continue on much like a normal bullet.
@quantuman100
@quantuman100 Год назад
@@moustrout1299 so, physics is the reason we don't do this, the speed/range of an object has to do with the energy in the round, and it's energy bleed. the total amount of energy the round has is dependent on the mass of the projectile (more mass = holds more energy)and the diving charge (more boom = more energy). The energy bleed is primarily due to drag, and that is always limited by surface area. now due to the square law a lot of small individual submunitions would very quickly lose energy because you just increased the total surface area by a lot. This is why they made such a complex system to encode the timing of the explosion of the fancy AA round they use.
@moustrout1299
@moustrout1299 Год назад
@@quantuman100 more of just a theory, while I cannot calculate speed myself, My question wonders whether, if we use a flachette that is arrowdynamic as the fragmentation, so a number of small darts that have fin stabilization and rotation, How much further could we push the range of such a fragmentation shot.

Tungsten was chosen to make the ammunition effective against armoured air targets. For the anti drone role this is way too expensive and not neccessary. I would suggest a cheaper steel variant for the anti drone role.

I rather have an overkill bullet that I dont need than an ineffective one when I need it.
@papaschlumpf5894
@papaschlumpf5894 11 месяцев назад
@@insomnia20422 And this is exactly your potential problem: If you use up the expensive ammo with the rare material shooting at drones you might not have any ammo left when the air-tank shows up. You can easily produce and buy more steel ammo than tungsten ammo, so you should save the real stuff for the real stuff. That always-only-the-best philosophy works fine in peace times.
@ImBigFloppa
@ImBigFloppa 11 месяцев назад
The cost for the tunsten balls in one of these projectiles would be about $20. The fuse and body and electronics inside of it cost many times more than the tungsten itself. Against drones, you'd need only a quick 1 second burst to take it out.

There is no such thing as "armored" air targets. If an aircraft has any meaningful amount of armor to resist a direct hit from a kinetic projectile, that aircraft will be too heavy to fly anyway, redering it unusable. If you are implying A-10 or SU-25, these two aircrafts only have slightly thicker layer of titanium around their cockpits to stop post-penetration fragment, not direct hit from kinetic projectile of any caliber. The rest of their airframes are as equally vulnerable to kinetic damage as any other aircraft.

Why not just use an airburst shell (proximity fuse?) to make a cloud of shrapnel?
@frozennunu8097
@frozennunu8097 Год назад
with a controlled cone shaped kill area you can calculate efficient overlapping kill zones instead of relying on random shrapnel so you can get better firing solutions and conserve ammunition

Because AHEAD is not only anti air. It is also for example the Pumas primary ammunition against soft targets like infantry and thin skinned vehicles They only carry AHEAD and APFSDS and no traditional HE ammo. With a time fuzed shell you can do such fun things as detonate it exactly over trench to shred the infantry down in the trench, or shoot through a wall and have the shell detonate behinde the fall, fragging everyone inside. You can't do this with a proxy fuze. Also, a precise time delayed fuze is cheaper than a proxy fuze.
@Procrastinater

That's inexpensive to manifacture so less profit incentive. That's literally the reason, do not believe whatever reason you are told, that's just smokescreening. "It is at least more effective, at just 300x the cost"
