Hello Walkers!
Todays walk is all about ZSL London zoo.
Animals can have a very soothing effect on our senses as we gaze at them with a eye of appreciation and amazement. We acknowledge how amazing these creatures and their individual characteristics can be, and in return we feel wonderful.
This walk is all about excitement, discovery and making you feel good.
It’s a beautiful summer morning in Regent’s Park, the temperature is 21 Degrees Celsius.
It’s 10:18am and the zoo has just opened its doors to us.
On this walking tour there’s a sense of calm and happy excitement in the air.
There’s plenty to see on this walking tour. Here’s what you’ll see in order of appearance :
- Reptile House - Snakes, Turtles and Lizards
- Bird Safari - Vultures
- Tiger Territory - Sumatran Tiger and its Cub
- Camel (Shedding their hairs)
- Swinging monkey
- Bust of the head of the Paul family - (Lord Paul's full title is The Rt Hon. the Lord Paul. His name is Swraj Paul, and he is a current member of the House of Lords). Swraj reads as follows: “Swraj” The Lord Paul of Marylebone - A dedicated, devoted , loving husband, father and grandfather. An entrepreneur, philanthropist, promoter and believer in social justice. Always striving to help mankind and working towards a better world. A truly international personality. On his 70th Birthday 18th February 2001. With love and devotion the Lady Paul “Aruna”

- Ambika Paul fountain - The artist, Shenda Amery, is an eminent British sculptor and Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. She has made busts of many politicians, establishment and media figures, including former British prime ministers John Major and Margaret Thatcher. Shenda originally trained as a chemist. This sculpture is part of a fountain. It depicts Ambika Paul, who sadly died of leukaemia in 1968, at the age of four. Ambika had loved the zoo and her father, Swraj Paul (Lord Paul) became a generous donor to the zoo after her death.

- Winnie the Pooh statue - Another famous former inhabitant was Winnie the bear who helped to inspire A.A. Milne’s ‘Pooh bear’. Winnie, c1914-1934, a young black bear, was purchased by Lieutenant Harry Colebourn. She was named Winnie after the city of Winnipeg, Lt. Colebourn’s home. She was brought to England with him, becoming the mascot of his regiment, the Second Canadian Infantry Brigade. When going to fight in France, Lt. Colebourn left Winnie at London Zoo for safekeeping. He visited when he could but at the end of the First World War he decided to present her to ZSL. A bronze of Winnie with Lt.
- Giants of the Galapagos - Galápagos tortoises are extraordinary. They're the largest tortoises in the world, they can live for over 150 years, and they carry around huge, bony shells that they can hide inside if they feel threatened. Despite their size they are gentle giants, and sadly, over the last few hundred years they haven't been too good at fending off predators. ZSL and other organisations are helping keep the tortoises safe, by running field conservation projects in the Galápagos Islands, and finding out about disease threats to Galápagos flora and fauna.
Meeting the animals at London Zoo has been an absolutely fantastic experience. I hope you enjoy it too.
