Boy, was I ever surprised when I reached the abandoned Loomis Mine! Initially dug in 1881 and only worked for silver until about 1895 or so, this abandoned mine turned out to be quite extensive with many levels. The lack of modern garbage and graffiti coupled with the fact that I can find no videos or pictures of it online led me to think that nobody had bothered to explore and document this mine in quite some time.
Here in Part 1, I explore the lowest haulage tunnel and its one branching drift. I also begin my descent down the inclined shaft. A large chamber off the main tunnel housed some large pieces of discarded mining equipment that were part of the hoist for the inclined shaft. Another unique thing about the Loomis Mine is that the cross-ties for ore cart tracks were actually tree logs and branches with notches cut into them! I have never seen cross-ties made out of tree branches before in an abandoned mine! The cross-ties are normally wooden planks. Further in, I came across a headframe with a magnificent 1890s sheave wheel still in place above it. This headframe was over an inclined shaft which went downward to four lower levels. I decided to descend the inclined shaft.
Be sure to check out the sneak-peek preview scenes from Part 2 at the end of this video!
