(Part 1) Nobody Has Explored This Abandoned Mine in a Long Time

Boy, was I ever surprised when I reached the abandoned Loomis Mine! Initially dug in 1881 and only worked for silver until about 1895 or so, this abandoned mine turned out to be quite extensive with many levels. The lack of modern garbage and graffiti coupled with the fact that I can find no videos or pictures of it online led me to think that nobody had bothered to explore and document this mine in quite some time.
Here in Part 1, I explore the lowest haulage tunnel and its one branching drift. I also begin my descent down the inclined shaft. A large chamber off the main tunnel housed some large pieces of discarded mining equipment that were part of the hoist for the inclined shaft. Another unique thing about the Loomis Mine is that the cross-ties for ore cart tracks were actually tree logs and branches with notches cut into them! I have never seen cross-ties made out of tree branches before in an abandoned mine! The cross-ties are normally wooden planks. Further in, I came across a headframe with a magnificent 1890s sheave wheel still in place above it. This headframe was over an inclined shaft which went downward to four lower levels. I decided to descend the inclined shaft.
Be sure to check out the sneak-peek preview scenes from Part 2 at the end of this video!
If you missed Part 2 where I descend the inclined shaft to the three lower levels in the Loomis Mine, it is located here: • (Part 2) Nobody Has Ex...
Part 3 is my exploration of the upper tunnel at the Loomis Mine. That video is located here: • (Part 3) Nobody Has Ex...

Absolutely awesome video, these workings must be huge, when I saw “Part 1” and 24:00 minutes long I was floored! Fantastic artifacts and it’s fantastic that the mine is still pristine after all of this time. Definitely interesting geology as well. I’m looking forward to Part 2, lots of ladders! Thanks for sharing Frank, fantastic exploration, stay safe.

Glad you enjoyed it, Dan! I don't think I've ever uploaded a video longer than 20 minutes. I try to avoid that if I can. However, there was just too much good footage in this one. I edited it down as much as I could and still had 24 minutes of footage. That's why there'll be a Part 2 and a Part 3 and probably a Part 4!

They still use bells for the cage in mines today, they are just electric and annoying as hell, especially when you are working near the cage.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 4 года назад
That bell wire I showed at the top of the inclined shaft actually does go all the way down the shaft to the fourth level. Amazing that it's still there in place after all these years. Yes, the bells are still used today. Must've been a noisy work environment when everything was up and running full-steam.

Frank, that type of rail was used at one time on the railroads--way back when. I believe strap-iron rails were used quite extensively in the Antebellum south. They were actually quite dangerous. If the strap got loose enough and rode up over a car wheel, it would pierce the bottom of a wooden passenger car as it rolled along. That was called a "snake", and you wanted to be someplace else when it happened. Of course, in a mine, it wd just be a nuisance. You're spot on abt the cross ties. IMO, that demonstrates the age of the mine, that it wasn't recently worked. Again, main-line railroads used notched cross ties made of tree trunks, branches, usually where money or supply or getting the job done quickly was the issue. Good video, can't wait for the next installment.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 4 года назад
Thanks for the info, Stan, regarding railroad ties and how the strapping could become problematic if it came loose. As I mentioned in the video, I don’t think I have ever seen cross-ties made out of tree trunks like I found in this mine. I think that was definitely a first for me!

That sheeve is cast and that spiral spoke design is a very typical design for the time frame.... I'm sure you see similar all the time. The fact that you mentioned it looking homemade makes me wonder if it was produced by a smaller more local foundry or possibly had some repairs done at the mine.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 4 года назад
Actually the sheave wheels are often missing from these headframes. It was a cool find, though. Based on what others have commented regarding the mine, it seems apparent that this mine was run on a small budget. You may be on to something when you said that wheel might've been produced from a local foundry. Probably was. Or maybe manufactured onsite, too. Thanks for your comment, James!

What are tommyknockers?
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 4 года назад
Good question, Adrian! Miners often believed in underground spirits or beings that they called Tommyknockers. The Tommyknockers were sometimes portrayed as being friendly and benign or, at other times, as being evil and mean. The friendly Tommyknockers would start knocking on wooden beams or the sides of the tunnel to warn miners of an impending collapse. I suppose the evil Tommyknockers would knock on the wooden support beams as a way to cause a collapse. If you Google the word “Tommyknockers“, you will find a trove of information on the subject. While I’m not one to believe in ghosts all that much, I have seen and heard some things while underground that defy explanation. Tommyknockers? Who knows!

These were inclined at around 45 degrees which is pretty easy to climb with no chance of falling. But, as you saw in the video, I took my time and thoroughly investigated each section before venturing onto it. I also think that the video makes the length of the ladders look a lot longer than they actually are. Thanks for commenting, Richard! Nice hearing from a fan in the United Kingdom!

That basically happened to Paul and me a few years back. We were in an abandoned mine - I can’t recall which one - and we had gone down the tunnel a good ways. When we turned around to make our way back out, we heard in the distance from where we had just come from a muffled thud as if a large rock had dropped to the tunnel floor. The mine we were in was already kind of on the crumbly side to begin with, so I didn’t feel very safe in that one. As we made our way back out we tried to find the rock that must’ve fallen to create that muffled thud that we heard, but we didn’t see anything. Strange....

When you’ve done this for 13 years like I have, it’s really not that big of a deal. I remember when I first started out, though, I was always too scared to go into the mines. I would only film them from the entrance and that would be it. Some of those videos are still on my RU-vid channel, I think.

In that "engine" room, that's all one machine, "exploded" into a million bits. The ring gear fits on the floor side of that U frame with the gear on the side, and in that U frame sat the drum. The little Y cup, that's a speed selector for the ring gear based on the drum's rotation, i'm going to guess this, those parts were up top, where the wheel chamber is. Someone took them apart and moved them in preparation to remove them from the mine. Won't comment on when, but that's my 2 cents. The way i see this mine, at least in its current rendition, the cheap rail, the wooden branch crossties/sleepers, that wheel atop (that's not a structurally sound design for something like an ore cart, it looks to me like it was salvaged from a horizontal application) ... this mine was run on the cheap.Like they didn't want to stack too much money inside it.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 4 года назад
Thanks again for another informative comment. I should've realized I was in the hoist room when I was there. I assumed that the hoist would've been in that chamber behind and above the sheave wheel. I also should've gone up there to check out that upper area where the sheave wheel was, but didn't. I appreciate the information in your comments!

Sometimes I research an abandoned mine after I already went to it and filmed it. That’s when I tend to find out answers to questions I had while I was in there filming. I probably should do all the research first before heading out, but sometimes that just isn’t the case. For some abandoned mines, I go to them spur of the moment while I’m cruising down the highway.

Unfortunately it's not in english, so you wouldn't understand the story. It's a scary story about a pig looking monster in the mines, found by a bunch of kids, that turns out to be a victim of a fire. The fire occurred in the mines many years ago. Thanks for letting me use it, i really appreciate it. Much love from Bulgaria
