This was a great speech. I remember it vividly - I was a Firstie - someone had the balls to ask GEN Schwarzkof to get a beer after the speech.

Maybe they should have asked about tactics and took his speech seriously. We lost our two longest wars only 9 years later.

Well, in risk of pissing off the entire US military, I'd say that is a bit overstated. But his Gulf war left hook was definitely impressive.

I have said previously, and I say this as an Englishman, The General is a true Patriot. He is a warrior in the line of Raleigh and Drake, and of Marlborough, and Wellington together with Nelson and foremost of The Great, Alexander of Macedon. R.I.P.

This was real and upfront; a good speech. MacArthurs speech back in '62 was good and sincere; but rather, and predictably, Melodramatic. Schwarrtkopf put it out plainly and eloquently. Good man!

"I have seen in your eyes a fire determination to get this war job done quickly," he said, hours after the first allied bombers streaked toward Baghdad. "My confidence in you is total, our cause is just. Now you must be the thunder and lightning of Desert Storm."

God bless the General's Family, and his memory - A True American Hero. I won't pause to say much about the vermin that would attack his name and memory, and their names aren't worth mentioning in a port-a-potty. They just want attention for their worthless lives. RIP, GEN Schwartkopf...

When you think about it. If this was 91 and he had a 30 year career or so, he easily served in Vietnam and the Gulf. When you think about it those are not all that far apart from one another. Even a 20 year career would be started with Vietnam and Ended with Desert Storm.

@tjustman Fair enough. In it's day, it was a great speech. Unfortunately, the changes since the speech make it seem slightly dated. Although I did like his universal comments about leadership. In that regard, what he said will be relevant forever.

True: Wars are not won from the air (I didn't say that!). But to say the war was only 100 hours and won from the ground only is not true either. So 1000 hours would be more accurate (also see the book from General Horner).

Sadly I was in the class of 91' but I and the military parted ways 3/4 of the way through my junior year. It saddens me to my bones that I did not graduate from this Immaculate institution. 1 regret in life. I am retiring from a somewhat para-military career, but my thoughts still go back to the , the Corps and the Corps.

Just wondering: Were you in the 1st Gulf War? What would have happened if there was no Air Support, No Air war before the ground war started. Would it have been so succesfull? What if the Iraqi Air Force was able to attack the ground forces.... (i think the combination of all forces (land, air, sea) made it so succesfull? Iraqi air defenses smashed, Iraqi forces being bombed around the clock and after that the formidable attack of the ground forces....
@TheUSSNimitz

Remember this is at the end of the Cold War and desert BDUs were still quite an anomaly. We never saw them on the grounds of West Point ever up to that point. I think he wore them to accentuate his recent experience and reinforce the points of the speech. Later he's seen in his Class As.
@gotwa229
@gotwa229 6 лет назад
Maybe b/c he just arrived from leading troops in theater and didn't have the time to brasso up the old Class A's to standards. Anyway, he seems to have had a lot on his mind, coming out of Desert Storm and the heady negotiations with the Iraqis dealing with the Kurds, not to mention managing the coalition and the world's press. Maybe he wanted to put what extra time he had the night before this momentous occasion working on his speech and thinking about what he really wanted to communicate to the next generation of officers who are currently the field grades and generals today leading U.S. troops all over the world today in 2018, rather than looking like a stiff-shirt, and starched star-studded sychophant.
