NOTE: Much more on the Vimy here www.andysvideo... This video shows the very last flight of the Brooklands Vimy replica from the Top Gear Hangar at Dunsfold to its finally resting place at Brooklands Museum. It took place on the 15 of November 2009 after a fifteen year career during which it had flown from England to Australia, as well as England to South Africa and crossing the Atlantic.It was now time for the Vimy to retire to Brooklands where the first Vimys had been built.
The Video is filmed both from the ground and from the air using a small camera attached to the tail fin.

Saw this fly over Wokingham years ago when I was working in someones garden. The most surreal thing I have ever witnessed 😃. It was so low and sooo slow, but a fabulous sight 😎.

It is a very surreal aircraft at www.andysvideo.com/#vimy you can see more of it including some with me sitting in the front seat filming, where it is even more surreal 🙂

I think this was the aircraft I saw at Goodwood some years ago. It did a final flight before sunset after many had gone home and drifted in for final landing as light and silent as a moth before a full moon. It was a wonderful and magic event commentated upon in print afterwards. How could we forget it?
@AndysVideo
@AndysVideo Год назад
Yes Glyn that is the one and if you go to my Vimy playlist at www.andysvideo.com you can see it at Goodwood, We tried to get a shot of the Vimy above the Napier Railton, unsuccessfully as it turned out but I published the footage from the attempt anyway.

@@AndysVideo Oh magic, magic. Two favourite machines. The Napier Railton had its front axle forged by Robin Hood Engineering Works, a K. Lee Guinness company. The. Billet it was formed from weighed 5 cwt. The final act of finishing was to hand file and Polish this item. My uncle Harry was involved in this operation which was done by apprentices and recently joined engineers. The Vimy, well what more could be said about that very special evening.

What a neat old design. One of those planes you never thought you would see flying again like the Me-262, I-16 Rata, or a big motored Gee Bee

Sad to see an airworthy aircraft retired, due to the overly restrictive British regulations... it was only under the more permissive US regulations that it was able to be registered and flown at all.

Only last year I discovered my Great Grandfather Arthur Walton was one of the many who worked for Vickers. Quite by accident I went through some papers that my mother was about to throw away and I found a letter from the 'Ministry of Munitions & War' dated 27th July 1916 (Letter Reference: R.C./M019) where his begging to go to the front to fight was refused, on account of him being 'engaged on urgent work therefore your services are indispensable at this time'. A great upload thank you.

Thanks Nigel, do you know which branch of Vickers he was at?

@@AndysVideo Hello Andy great to read you. No I don't know which Branch yet. I have a surviving Uncle who actually remembers Arthur (his Grandfather) I have recently bombarded him with many questions, but I didn't think to ask him that. The crazy thing is, last year I found myself making two full-size Vickers machine-guns and a generic cockpit for a WW1-Themed music video. Then six months later I find that my great-grandfather was probably doing exactly the same thing... for REAL? Crazy coincidence. I have been totally immersed in WW1 of late as I discovered that my other Great Grandfather was Corporal William Barrows 13126. 6th Bn. Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, who along with two chums 9Second Lieutenant Coke and Corporal Wilson) and the 11 Canadians he was trying to save, were killed on the morning of the 2nd of June 1916, on this the first day of the Battle of Mont Sorrel. All 14 brave lions of men are laid to rest in one special corner of the Bedford House Cemetery in Belgium. I will keep you posted thank you, and any help you can offer I would most grateful accept. Thank you and best wishes and my thoughts are with the brave.

Why does it have to retire, since it is a replica and not an original WW1 era aircraft? It is not like it had used borrowed original engines. Was it only ever intended to re-do the epic flights Lord Northcliffe & The Mirror sponsored. I knew about Alcock & Brown using a Vimy and being the first to fly across the Atlantic. I did not know about the other great flights to Cape Town and Australia. The flight to Australia by the Smith Brothers must have been what inspired our Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly to Australia. I say 'our' because I am from Kingston-Upon-Hull like Amy Johnson.
@andysvideos1160
@andysvideos1160 8 лет назад
It had to retire because it was on an American Experimental License. It would be possible to to fly it again and re- registered in the UK, but it would cost an awful lot of money and take a lot of work. Any Aviation Millionaires reading this please email me.

Yes it is the same one. Peter can be clearly seen just before the final landing standing up in the cockpit and photographing the rest of the crew. On my home page you will also find a video of Peter (and Lang) flying it into Brooklands for the first time, before it went to Australia.

I agree and it would have been nice if it had not happened, However it was always going to and Mercedes use of the land does mean that we can still hold small air displays (could not have done that if the area had been filled up with buildings) and as the Vimy has shown a small grass strip is a possibility if we can get the support and sponsorship. So it may be that you will get to see some form of flying again on this historic airfield.

RE comments below, this is why the CAA is known as the 'Campaign Against Aviation.' These are the people that demanded the intended re-creation of the HP 42 passenger aircraft -- the first major purpose built commercial passenger aircraft flown by Imperial Airways; renowned for its reliability and flawless safety and the standards it set for numbers of passengers carried; (24) and the 'pullman' class comfort and standard of serviceand quality (in the 1930s). The CAA demanded that it be fitted with modern seats -- amongst other idiocies -- which as far as I know killed the project. Also knowing, no doubt, that the cabin was not large enough to take them and they could not be fitted in the plane. Or that it could take the extra weight.

@applesweeter The Vimy? It was one of the first to cross the Atlantic for one, it held a few other records setting flights. It could get very tiring flying the Vimy, the control forces the pilots had to deal with were very heavy.

As to the future in the short term there are plans to get it out the hanger and have engine runs (not as easy as it sounds, see the getting it into the hanger video). In the long term who can say? Given the right sponsors and a UK registration it could one day fly again. I know myself (and the rest of team) are always ready to be asked to transport it to a runway.

All airframes, particularly wooden ones, have a finite life in terms of flying hours. Maybe this replica's hours have run out.

Sadly no not for the moment. The many reasons it was grounded are listed on the Brooklands website and are worth reading. However, at least it can now be seen by the public, unlike when it was locked away in the Top Gear and other hangers.

@AndysVideo
@AndysVideo 4 года назад
In fairness that rather depends on what you mean by the 'real' Vimy? The one that did Brooklands to Australia the first time is of course there, as is the atlantic first one in London. However this video is about the Vimy replica that re created both of those record breaking first flights as well as re creating the first Brooklands to South Africa first flight, all of which were done in different Vimys.

Can’t believe there was no aerial video footage of this magnificent old beast from the Skyvan and who added the awful bit of soundtrack as it overflow Brooklands?
@AndysVideo
@AndysVideo 4 года назад
There may well be aerial footage from the skyvan, but this is my amateur videographer footage done from the ground plus the camera the lads let me strap onto the aircraft. If you are not a museum volunteer then you would not get the 'in joke' about the Brooklands' Fire Brigade and its occupants (all volunteers) to whom the music is dedicated.
