Part 1: Will A Mora Companion Survive Hard Use Testing?

I was always wondering how much hard use a Mora Companion could take before it broke...I had never tested that concept...until today! Take a look as I give my Mora Companion carbon steel blade a really tough time to see if it can survive hard use. Hint...it breaks.

How you removed the knife from the log when it got stuck is exactly THE WRONG WAY to do it. If a knife gets stuck while batoning, don’t try to pound it out. Just wedge another piece of wood into the cut and pound the wedge in a bit. The log will wedge open and you can slide the knife right out, easy as pie, and without destroying your blade. Also, I understand this is a torture test, but a Mora can EASILY be used to baton ANY wood, ANY size, and not fail. When batoning a larger piece of wood (with a diameter wider than the knife is long), don’t start off by trying to pound the knife through the center of the log. Instead, place the edge of the knife close to the edge of the log. Baton off a thin slice of the log, turn the log and baton off another thin slice. Repeat until the log has shrunk in diameter enough to baton through the center. ALSO, there is NEVER NEVER NEVER a reason why someone would need to baton through an entire log. Worst case scenario, you start batoning through a log an inch or so. Then, you shape another hefty piece of wood into a wedge. Insert the wedge into the cut you have started with the knife, pound on the wedge a couple of times until you can free the knife, then pound on your wooden wedge again until the log splits. Now, you still have your knife, you have split the log, and all is well. These tests I see (a lot of people do them) are just not realistic. They teach people to expect things from their knives that are just absurd, and get them into some really bad habits. A knife is meant for cutting/slicing. That’s it. In an emergency, sure, baton with it. But do it smart, and you can use a $12 Mora your entire life and NEVER worry about it failing. In these tests, it’s not the knives that fail, it’s the failure of people to understand how to use a knife properly, and a really silly trend of people expecting way WAAAAAY to much out of their knives. You wouldn’t jump into a Volvo and try to jump sand dunes with it, and then consider the car a failure if you tried and it broke down, would you? Of course not. You use the correct tool for the job. In a pinch, you may have to push a tool a LITTLE past its designed limits, but you do it easy, and do it smart, and it won’t fail.

I think you failed to understand that in this video, I don't care about technique...I don't care about the "right way" to wedge a piece of wood apart...blah blah blah. It was simply about beating the snot out of the knife to see how much abuse it could take...period. I understand your comments perfectly. You're not wrong about a single thing you said. I have had that knife for almost 5 years now...and I used it a TON and carefully, and successfully. It's only the second knife I've ever broken...and I've handled well over 100 different blade on camera on my channel alone...never mind all the others I have not yet had a chance to film. So I get it man...trust me...I get it. But proper technique was intentionally NOT used in this video.

No offense but you guys are the reasons why people keep batoning in the first place. You tell people batoning is wrong when the entire point of videos is like this is to test the FUCK out of a knife unrealistically. If you really don't want batoning to be a thing then comment or share videos that show why it's improper/ vids that do it properly rather than be screaming at the wrong videos

Most knife,bushcraft etc RU-vidrs,don't know nothing about knives.However because knife companies and nowdays youtubers see everything as money,they have managed to convice people,that a knife has to take a turn and become a very poorly perfoming tool.They have got into peoples brain,that a knife is an AXE and not a knife.How many of you guys are going to the jungle to fight Nazis or Ninja Zombies,for you to need a knife thicker than a Mora? None off you right? I have many bushcraft knives and the one that works better and in the same time is the most comfortable of all the others..guess what..it''s a Mora...cheers

Definitely an extreme abuse test. It's good to see how well your old mora stud up. If anyone abused their knife like this in a survival situation, they would deserve the outcome. It would be interesting to see it put against another knife of the same value .

I own one and just ordered another - I have the stainless steel Companion, and the other is a carbon Clipper 840. Personally, I'd like to baton, saw and chop as little as possible. Shave enough dry kindling into hairs to get a fire going, and start adding larger pieces of fuel accordingly. For a woodstove in your house you want 4 or 5 months worth of well seasoned split wood to get through a winter. Out camping and bushcrafting? Sawing and splitting/batoning aren't even necessary, unless everything is completely soaking wet; in that scenario batoning is absolutely required to get at dry wood. You did prove these knives are super tough. Way beyond their intended capacity, and that is great. That's some hard wood you were pounding on. You just convinced me these two knives are going to last me for life. Thanks man!!

I know your intent was to see how much abuse it would take to break the knife, and you succeeded. That knotty log test went the only way it could have gone. It would have been a serious challenge for any knife. Also I push hard on the handle with a full grip when I baton to keep the tip from diving.

At 1:22 you can see the knife seems to be darker near the base of the blade. I noticed that in a couple of the other views as well. You mention in the comments you used the knife for 5 years before this test. Is it possible that you may have drawn the temper near the base of the blade, or hardened the blade in the tang (usually you want the tang softer than the blade so it doesn't break). Not saying it is intentional, just wondering if the blade was maybe damaged. Also, is there a part 2? Bought a new one and tested again, maybe?

@@outerlimitless Its funny how people reacted to your video. Also, if this was knife had a full length tang, that tang still would have snapped. Lots of "full tang' knives have skeletonized tangs. Maybe the blade would not have started coming out of the handle if it had a full length tang, but any tang that narrows is liable to break when you hammer on the handle. Easy solution is not to hammer on the handle. Hammering on the blade seems fine. Thanks for letting us see how much abuse this thing can take! I think I will be buying a Mora allaround, the 4". Unless its an actual bushcraft knife batoning wood is retarded. Even Kabars arent built for it. Knives meant to baton wood are almost a quarter inch thick and have full tangs. "Survival" knives are modified military fighting knives that are never used properly by prepper types and companion style knives are camp knives meant for light woodwork and preparing food. These guys beating the shit out of 15-20 dollar camp knives and rat tail military knives shouldnt be surprised when they shatter or start to come apart its not at all what they are designed to withstand.

@@enzowarren9832 I saw the BK2 in an episode of naked and afraid. The man had it. They were a really nice 'couple' although she was lesbian. She was really a nice person also. He as well. But that BK2 fared well. He got around what needed to be done. So, fair enough. Renato here in disguise as Ve suvius. Ain't that something. Not many people can do that.

If you hit the blade only in the center, while holding the handle with two fingers, it would not have broken. You have been pounding on it from the tip to the forward portion of the handle, and it was bound to break. If you are going to split logs, use an ax. Using a proper tool is essential to efficiency and safety. Knives designed capable of splitting thick logs you demonstrated usually come with 4/1 inch thick blades.

I guess you completely missed the purpose of this video? I've split plenty of wood to know what to do, but thank you for the advice I guess?
@deador9192
@deador9192 5 лет назад
@@outerlimitless I guess I did. Then I wonder why would anyone want to find out if a knife NOT designed for such an "abuse" would break or not? Did you expect your Mora would survive it? Thanks for the reply.
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 5 лет назад
@@deador9192 They way I see it is that people want to know what they can use their tool for. In this case, it can be used for probably more than most would expect. People say you can't baton with a rat tang Mora. This proves that wrong. In fact, it did much more heavy work without breaking than my Schrade schf52m... so using and experimenting helps gain a better understanding of the limitations of equipment. Do you feel bad for my Mora? It lived a good life. I still have it... nothing good epoxy can't fix.

Of course this is an abuse test, but kids, keep in mind, splitting logs with a knife, any knife, is the dumbest idea the modern survivalist could have come up with. That's why the axe is probably just as old as the knife in human history, if not older!

I prefer a knife because I am not that good with an axe. I trust splitting with a knife and it's more controlled...safer when I'm deep in the mountains. Obviously this was just a hard use/abuse test.
@silvanigra
@silvanigra 5 лет назад
In a survival situation, yes, it's good to know you can rely on your knife for splitting wood, but otherwise, there is another good reason I never recommend batoning - it will dull the edge a lot faster. Why not keep your edge in good sharp condition for other jobs?

I don't even know what survival situation means anymore. We used to talk about camping. Sometimes when I was camping and didn't have an axe it would make sense to split wood with a big knife. I now know this knife can handle that task. Could come in handy. Survival? You mean a SHTF scenario? Someone (or a big group of people, more likely) with their a guns already out is going to take all your gear anyway. You mean you get lost on a trip or your plane crashes? Doubt you will have an axe, maybe you just have a knife. How is that stupid to think about? Besides, do you really need to split logs to survive? The whole survival discussion is silly. I just wanted to know how much abuse this cheap popular knife can take. Answer - alot. yay!

You have no right to do this test! I think you're under the impression that you do, because you bought it with your own money and the knife is yours, about right? The whole premises of this video is beyond perplexing and quite frankly downright triggering😠! Make it stop, make it stop, please someone make it stop! I just want to say Happy New year, and thank you for doing this test, it's pretty much what i expected. We all love our Mora knifes, Long Live Mora except in your presence😉😁✌.

They will break if u use a small knife for tasks that a big knife should do. They will break if u use a full-tang large knife for task that bench cutter should do. Absolute biased video.
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 2 года назад
I don't think you understand the definition of the word biased. Biased is about OPINION. I simply demonstrated the knife and how it performs on tasks that people ask or debate if it can be done. That is not biased...simply called demonstrating the capability and discussing the results.

I mean this is a bit much for this knife lol I own a small axe and a Kukri for heavy duty stuff like big hunks of wood. I’d use it for carving small stuff, minor tasks. I never use my small blades for stressful jobs...seems impractical. I understand the point of the video, it’s just not what I would use it for lol impressive though.

Did I hurt its feelings? I have over 80 fixed blade knives...and currently 4 Mora's. I can buy another one, or a dozen more for that matter. Why is it a shame? I USE my knives...I thrash and beat on them. That is fun and I enjoy it. Oh, and I own them...they are mine to do what I wish with them. I use fixed blade knives literally every single day, many many times a day... So why is it a shame?
