I studied to be a band director in college and when I didn't pass the national teacher's exam by 8 points, I gave up that desire when the only opportunity I could find in Louisiana in 1980 was to be a part time assistant band director / part time girls PE teacher in a small town making $7K a year. I realized if I wanted to support a family doing other than working two jobs in a retail environment I'd have to go back to college and major in something else. Looking back it was probably for the best because one of the things they didn't teach when getting my music degree is how to take care of issues like the kid that detuned all the drums without physically harming him 🙂.
