In this video, I share three patch diagrams and talk about building up chord progressions in keys other than C Major using 8 steps equal temperament. Using Modal Scales - I build up patches in D Dorian, G Mixolydian, and F Lydian.

This video series is designed to give a basic and thorough overview of the Moog Subharmonicon. The Subharmonicon can be very difficult to get the hang of. This series breaks down the complexities of the Subharmonicon into small and manageable chunks. By the end of the series, you'll have a strong understanding of each part and how it contributes to the overall sound as well as how it interacts with the other parts. Additionally, the videos will cover how to use the patchbay and give helpful pairing tips so you can build your own Subharmonicon patches.
There are more resources on my Patreon Page including a full color eBook of DFAM patches with links to tutorial videos as well as other sound studio patches and notes. The eBook will be updated regularly with new patches and tips.

Pro tip: if you hold down the envelope generator (EG) button it will go into drone mode which makes it easier to tune each voice.

I think you said in a previous video that you are a teacher-- if so it definitely shows. This series is so well done and you really have a knack for explaining things.

Yes! I am a HS teacher. Funny thing is I started making videos for different things during the pandemic. That's when I learned how to use Premiere and bought a camera... After I no longer needed that, I was just looking around for something else to do with those skills... Here I am. :) Thanks so much for the compliment. It means a lot.

I’ve watched the whole Subharmonicon series and it’s been fantastic. Great job and thanks for putting it together! The Subharmonicon was my first analog/semi-modular and I don’t play the piano myself, so I lean on sequencing everything and even though I don’t have much music theory background, I’ve found it very easy to come up with nice polyrhythms and melodies, which to be honest, I was scared about with so many people saying this synth was too hard to use and not the best first analog to get. I think that all the options the Sub has, paired with a more advanced sequencer like the one on the OP-Z or the Electron open up a wild world of combinations. I’m still only learning my ways on the Subh alone, but it’d be nice to see a video pairing up the Sub with one of those and see how far you take things with step components which are incredible to spice up simple patterns (the Mother-32 sequencer feels too basic in comparison). I’d be curious to see how far you’d get down that rabbit hole. Cheers mate 👏

Great series! Just got my SubH. I’ve always been interested in how to apply modal harmonics, specifically coming from Miles Davis’ work like So What, so more from you on Modes and music theory - to be used not only on MOOG gear, but other set ups, would be great. Thanks!

Cool yeah. I love those modal jams. So What is such a crazy tune. Dorian mode. So simple but it changes that half step. I played that song in a jazz ensemble when I was younger and remember having such a hard time not losing my place.

Cool videos series! I begin with semi-modulars, so it comes to be pretty handful for me. There's just a thing I don't get (I could if I was home with my multimeter, but I'm not): when patching an EG tu modulate a one of the rhythm (or somthing like it), there's two knobs, what are they doing excatly? Thanks!
@braintree56
@braintree56 4 месяца назад
The first knob of the envelope is the rate of the attack or rise of the envelope. The second knob is the rate of decay. So it's essentially how fast the envelope goes up and how fast it returns back to its original state. Does that help?
@YaCoUYaCoU
@YaCoUYaCoU 4 месяца назад
@@braintree56 I'm familiar with envelopes for a sound. It's when it's applied to a rhythm that I get lost.
@braintree56
@braintree56 4 месяца назад
Ok - maybe think of it like this - it's kind of like automation in a DAW. You have that "envelope" shape where it curves up and then goes back down. Basically - you're automating whatever knob you're patching into. So if you are patching into the Rhythm - then it's essentially turning that Rhythm knob up and then back down. It will make it sort of stutter step for a bit or make the rhythm realign itself in a different part of the song. Does that help?@@YaCoUYaCoU

Thanks again for this great tutorial and inspiration! Do you have any plans of making an „advanced“ tutorial showing how to use the sequencers with the suboscillators? Technically it‘s simple, but musically quite challenging…
@braintree56
@braintree56 Год назад
It's definitely challenging. I've been playing around with it, but haven't come up with anything mind blowing yet... If I come up with something worth making a video with - I will! If you come up with anything, let me know! :)

interesting, are notes Db, Eb, Gb, Ab and Bb Not available at all on Subharmonicon? Is it not a chromatic instrument? thanks
@braintree56
@braintree56 11 месяцев назад
It can be chromatic. You can set it to be quantized to the C scale or the chromatic scale. One of the biggest complaints about the Sub is that you can't transpose the quantized setting (or at least not easily - I cover that in a different video). You can also set it to Just intonation as opposed to equal temperament!

@@braintree56 My pleasure man. I do have a SubH related question however… Two & half years in and I still can’t properly ascertain what the Seq Assign buttons do on the Subs. The manual states “when engaged, this will modify the integer value of the VCO Freq knob” I looked up integers regarding music and, quite frankly, got a headache trying to relate it to what’s going on in the SubH. I know I like the sound of it but wondered if you have any clue as to what’s actually happening. It would be nice to be able to use them deterministically sometimes, instead of trial & error which I do now.
@ModArch
@ModArch Год назад
@@chitlun I think 'integer' refers to the number by which the frequency of the main oscillator is divided to produce the undertone/subharmony.
