Excellent series Keith Thank you, Wish I could find something like that for a project. On your video all that is lacking (as you alluded) is that most wonderful smell of hot oil and steam which is why the steam hall a the Manchester museum is a favorite place. Fantastic

Very nice video and excellent work on the engine. I like the BFD pump, reminds me of some of the old twin cylinder steam pumps we had in the refinery. Probably an 8 or 10 inch steam cylinder and a pump cylinder of about the same size. Made a terrific sound when being operated by the 250 lb. steam header!

Wow, I have spent the past 2 days watching your videos. I have been a lover of steam power for years, my fathers father owned a large steam tractor and trashing machine, he used to do all the trashing for the neighborhood, so dad had all sorts of tales of those days when steam was replacing the horse on the farm. Then when I took a job in Central North Dakota, I found the town hosted a huge steam thrashers meet every year, and I became very acquainted with the old engines that were stored there in huge buildings at the steam thrashers grounds, and the meet that lasted three days in September of each year was filled with the whistles of those huge engines as they drove in a parade around the grounds, accompanied by old Oil Pull single lung tractors and ancient machines of all sorts. The queen of the bee was a HUGE steam engine that had been used to run a saw mill and was moved to the site and run once a year for just that purpose, the crew would saw up trees that had been cut down from around town and saved for just that purpose. I do miss those days and as you say, that smell man that takes you back, there is nothing like it. Thanks for the information on how those engines ran, I find it amazing indeed.

Hi Keith, I really enjoy watching your videos and learning about steam engines by watching them. I've played with cheap steam engines when I was a kid and am seriously thinking about building a Stuart No9. I may perhaps just buy the machined kit since I no longer have a lathe or a mill. I'd also like to build my own boiler since I have plenty of experience working with copper and 45% silver.

pretty neat to see the old generation of steam engines my grandfather owned a tugboat in Burlington Vermont that ran by Steam it was a pretty massive engine and it was a brick hauler and I remember head oil chamber I think resonator that would hold the oil when it spills and catching oil.the pump itself remember how stinky messy it was. I help my grandfather took it for a ride haven't heard anything of it about it in somebody's backyard rotting away or somebody has it in the garage somewhere never knew what happened to it it's quite a Steamboat. my grandfather's learn me how to run the clutch well without getting in a snare when you kick it in fast could blow the whole thing but it was special timing when you Prime the clutch to get it propel. I can still remember the oil smell in the water mixed together. I was once told there's a lot of those engines hidden around in dark secret places. it was fun to help my grandfather realign the burning chamber with ceramic brickliners in cement it was delicate work I remember how they go in got filthy out of it. I would definitely love to do it again that was a lifetime memory hoping there's a lot of these engines out there hidden and be found again. i help my grandfather make piston Reed valves that was pretty cool. he also had to fabricate lot of the parts

Can you imagine how much power this little engine would have if it was a compound engine instead of a simple engine design? I mean to recycle some of that exhausted steam into a low pressure cylinder..........like the "White" steam cars used......impressive.
@courtlandblake48
@courtlandblake48 8 лет назад
I just found you on RU-vid and have enjoyed your videos; beautiful work. However, it seems that there is a lot of steam escaping through the exhaust. Shouldn't you only see steam exhausting at the end of each stroke? Is the valve seating properly?

I once saw a guy with his skin and boiler suit mixed together in curled up flecks all over his body, a bit of dark filipino skin with orange boiler suit mixed in, the guy died that night, I was 12. He'd been in the room where the expansion bellows for the forward steam line is, going to the anchor winch. Yeah high pressure steam is nasty stuff. Love your work and videos, can u make them longer ?

Great videos, now I'm hooked. Do you ever use water treatment in the boilers? What do you do when preparing steam engines for storage?
@keithappleton
@keithappleton 9 лет назад
wgenerotzky I generally use Copper boilers so water treatment is not necessary, For storage plenty of steam oil blown through with compressed air followed by WD40 seems to keep them rust free internally.

@keithappleton

calm callum Not really, especially whilst needing the water replenishing constantly, this boiler is 6 inches in diameter, I would say that if the boiler was twice that size, then it would be fine.
@MrHbaus

interesting that the limiting factor is the boiler......is there a reason for that? is it just that this boiler cant reach the required psi/temp for a sustained load?

I agree, but these are sympathetic authentic renovations and adding extraneous parts and modifying the design would be unacceptable to the owner of the engine. It is after all part of a steam engine collection which will mainly be for display purposes . . . .

I love steam engines but I know nothing about steam engines other than basic concepts. So I have to ask a dumb question. The steam coming out of the engine is wasted. Is it supposed to be run to a condenser, and from that back to the boiler. or to some other engine to use the secondary steam? My wish would be to have a small engine to run a paddle wheel on the back of a small pleasure boat, or a larger engine to run a steam powered replica that I could take a few friends on. My crazy wish would be to have an iron clad replica, but I need to win the lottery first.
@keithappleton
@keithappleton 7 лет назад
It is not practical to reuse the condensate in small models because it is difficult to remove the cylinder oil from the mixture in such a small scale.
@fritz46
@fritz46 7 лет назад
On big engines (or locomotives) the exhaust steam is usually blown up the chimney to create draught. You can also use it to pre-heat the feedwater.
